SYNOPSIS:
The History of Byzantium Podcast by Robin Pierson is one of the best history podcasts out there! We continue the story of Justinian into his early years of leading the Byzantine Empire. War erupts on all the fronts of the Eastern Roman Empire. The armies of Constantinople are pitted against Persia, Arabia, and the Danubian frontier. Sound effects audio is far too loud and ruins it for me. I use videos like this while I fall asleep, sudden transformer effects fsr louder than a normal conversation voice kills it. Youre supposed to normalize the audio when adding effects, and check at low AND high volumes for errors.

It was one of the best videos i've seen about this conflict between the Sassanids and the Romans However, some details weren't mentioned For example, the numbers of armies which we know have been reported, weren't mentioned in some battles The Sassanids had 30,000 men at Thannuris while the Romans had 40,000 and the Sassanid army at Callinicum was between 15,000-20,000 in total (5,000 Of them were Lakhmid Arabs) against a Byzantine army of 25,000 (5,000 of them were Ghassanids and 2,000 were Lycaonian infantry ) And why do some Sassanids look like Arabs in the video ?

Unfortunately you didn't mention the most important part about the Sassanid Hephthalite war in the video The fact that Peroz I was actually immediately avenged His wuzurg framadār (something like prime minister), Sukhra (also spelled Sufaray, Sufray, Surkhab, Sarafra'i) avenged Peroz I by invading Hephthalite territory and inflicting a major defeat on them He took the majority of the Sasanian army (or at least what was left of it) with him and when he reached Gorgan, the Hephthalite king, Khushnavaz, got informed of his plan to attack him, and quickly prepared his men for war He then sent a message to Sukhra, asking him about his intentions and enquiring what his name and his official position were Sukhra shortly sent a message back to Khushnavaz, informing him about his name and position Khushnavaz thereafter sent another message, warning him of doing the same mistake as Peroz However, his words did not discourage Sukhra, who then marched against Khushnavaz, and inflicted a heavy defeat on him Khushnavaz thereafter sued for peace, which Sukhra would only accept if he would give him everything Khushnavaz had seized from Peroz I's camp, which included his treasuries, the chief priest (mowbed) of the empire, and his daughter Perozdukht Khushnavaz accepted his demands, and peace was made Another notable fact, was that during the reign of Kavad I (Peroz's son), he (Kavad) was able to reconquer and restore the Sassanid territories in the east A Sasanian campaign in 508 led to the conquest of the Zundaber (Zumdaber) Castellum, associated with the temple of az-Zunin in the area of ad-Dawar, situated between Bust and Kandahar A Sasanian coin dating to 512/3 has been found in Marw This indicates the Sasanians under Kavad had managed to re-conquer Khorasan after successfully dealing with the Hephthalites

I love when people are digging in the dirt to install a new well or something and discover a nice mosaic or something from this era. It helps you realize that when the fall of Rome happened, society didn't instantly fall into the dark ages but some of it's glory stayed intact. I don't remember learning anything about the Byzentine era in school.

From memory... *ahem...* *"I couldn't think of a finer man for the task; retake the former Western Roman Empire from the barbarians, deliver it to out beloved emperor on a plate... these games should be in **_your_** honour!* *When I heard Justinian had **_you_** in mind, I can't say I was surprised. After all, you were his father's favourite bodyguard... not to mention your accomplishments at the Battle of Dara... or the way you suppressed the riots of Nika... you are the last of the **_great_** commanders, and your loyalty is clearly above question.* *However, the ruins of Rome are a wild and unpredictable place; a lot can happen out of reach in these frequent wars. A man might look about him and think - perhaps - that it is all rightfully his...* *Good luck, Belisarius..."*

Byzantium was colonized by the Greeks from Megara in 657 BC, and remained primarily Greek-speaking until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in AD 1453. Also look up the ancient Anatolian Kingdom of Pontus, Greeks from the Black sea. A blend of Greek and Persian influences. Yes, Greek identity can challenge any Ukrainian Ethnic groups and prove Greeks were in the Black sea far before any Slavic ethnic group existed. What is commonly called the kingdom of Pontos flourished for over 200 years in the coastal regions of the Black Sea. At its peak in the early first century BC, it included much of the southern, eastern, and northern littoral, becoming one of the most important Hellenistic dynasties founded before a successor of Alexander the Great. It also posed one of the greatest challenges to Roman imperial expansion in the East. Not until 63 BC, after many violent clashes, was Rome able to subjugate the kingdom and its last charismatic ruler Mithridates VI, who proved to be as formidable a foe to Rome as Hannibal. He has been called the greatest ruler of the Kingdom of Pontus. He cultivated an immunity to poisons by regularly ingesting sub-lethal doses; this practice, now called mithridatism, is named after him. After his death, he became known as Mithridates the Great. And after the full of Rome by the Germanic tribes and mercenaries from the far East of Asia that murdered most of the Romans and destroyed and looted Rome. Some Romans managed to flee to Byzantium and were saved by the Greek Royal Guards of Byzantium. The same Greek Royal Guards of Byzantium who trained the Anglo-Saxons from England, after they fled England from the Normans. The popes are not even Roman, that's why popes don't have last names. Poverty-stricken like one of many barbarians that invaded Europe was Odoacer, the Germanic king of the Torcilingi, and he self-proclaimed himself as the new Roman emperor and he embraced everything Roman and Greek. So the Roman state continued and some of its traditions were maintained, modern historians distinguish Byzantium from ancient Rome insofar as it was centred on Constantinople, oriented towards Greek rather than Latin culture and characterised by Orthodox Christianity. And Greek history records show that the Germanic tribe's were given the Netherlands and not Europe. Germanic peoples are nomadic like the Turks and British. There's an intelligent documentary in English to be made about Byzantium culture, and this isn't it. History is way more clear with a Hellenic classical education, and someone who speaks like a native Greek and not as an outsider/foreigner who learned Greek. Dionysius Pyrrhus requests the exclusive use of Hellene in his Cheiragogy: "Never desire to call yourselves Romans, but Hellenes, for the Romans from ancient Rome enslaved and destroyed Hellas." And George Gemistus Plethon pointed out to Constantine Palaeologus that the people he leads are "Hellenes, as their race and language and education testifies". Ducas Vatatzes, wrote in a letter to Pope Gregory IX about the wisdom that "rains upon the Hellenic nation". He maintained that the transfer of the imperial authority from Rome to Constantinople was national and not geographic, and therefore did not belong to the Latins occupying Constantinople: Constantine's heritage was passed on to the Hellenes, so he argued, and they alone were its inheritors and successors. His son, Theodore II Lascaris, was eager to project the name of the Greeks with true nationalistic zeal. He made it a point that "the Hellenic race looms over all other languages" and that "every kind of philosophy and form of knowledge is a discovery of Hellenes […]. What do you, O Rome, have to display?" No other small country can compare with Greece in terms of impact on human benefit. In the beginning... God created the Earth, and in the light blue waters, put a small ship to travel forever, in order not only to give birth but also to transfer great ideas all over the world ... He called that ship...HELLAS! The Greeks created it, the Germans copy it, and the English exploit it. The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance. Herodotus

The part of the map that details the distribution of peoples north of the Danube is grossly inaccurate, the Proto-Bulgars would've still resided in what is known as "Old Great Bulgaria", whereas the Avars would arrive in Europe only two decades later at the behest of the Roman emperor Tiberius who had invited them as Rome's Foederati against the Slavs and the Kutrigurs. During the 6th and 7th centuries, the most numerous and the most dangerous enemies to the ERE at the Danube were the Slavs - the Sclavenes and the Antes. Menander Protector: "(...) About the fourth year of the reign of Caesar Tiberius Constantine, some hundred thousand Slavs broke into Thrace and pillaged that and many other regions. As Greece was being laid waste by the Slavs, with trouble liable to flare up anywhere, and as Tiberius had at his disposal by no means sufficient forces, he sent a delegation to the Khagan of the Avars. I’m curious as to why you have not showcased more in-depth details for Callinicum. There is plenty of info online for the details and deployment of both Roman and Persian forces. In fact, Prokopios describes it with vivd detail. Not showing the battle clearly just seems baffling Imo. There’s plenty of info to show that the Persians had also managed to bribe Sabir Huns to conduct devastating raids deep into the roman Mesopotamia. The Caucasus by now secured by the Persians allowed hunnic mercenaries to stream out without any obstacles. The victories of Dara and Sattala are while excellent victories, much of the Persian army still remained intact. So its probable the war would continue if Kavadh had not passed on. Another reason why Roman armies had not pursued the Persians was because that the Persians had the steppe asian nomad tactic of quickly regrouping from defeats. Kaveh Farrokh showcases this in his book, The Armies of Ancient Persia, The Sassanians. Once Roman troops broke formation to chase Persian troops, they can quickly regroup and defeat them in kind. I also disagree primarily on Belisarius being recalled and not fired from his position. He clearly very much was. Prokopios is seen trying to manipulate the final outcome of the battle to lessen blame. Sources from John Malalas and several others contradict Prokopios’s account. Officially he was recalled, but privately, this was not the case. He was only reinstated after saving Justinian in the Nika riots.

7:00 Actually, Peroz I was immediately avenged His wuzurg framadār (something like prime minister), Sukhra avenged Peroz I by invading Hephthalite territory and inflicting a major defeat on them He took the majority of the Sasanian army (or at least what was left of it) with him and when he reached Gorgan, the Hephthalite king, Khushnavaz, got informed of his plan to attack him, and quickly prepared his men for war He then sent a message to Sukhra, asking him about his intentions and enquiring what his name and his official position were Sukhra shortly sent a message back to Khushnavaz, informing him about his name and position Khushnavaz thereafter sent another message, warning him of doing the same mistake as Peroz However, his words did not discourage Sukhra, who then marched against Khushnavaz, and inflicted a heavy defeat on him Khushnavaz thereafter sued for peace, which Sukhra would only accept if he would give him everything Khushnavaz had seized from Peroz I's camp, which included his treasuries, the chief priest (mowbed) of the empire, and his daughter Perozdukht Khushnavaz accepted his demands, and peace was made

The CH sound in Greek/Latin/Persian is the same as that at the end of the Scottish word loch, not the Engiish CH as in the beginning of the words check or choke. If you can’t say that, just use the K sound. Say Kal-kis, not Chal-kis for Chalcis, and Kal ke-don for Chalcedon, etc.

The image of the beast originated during Justinian’s reign, 57 years after the Western Roman Empire fell, which gave death to the Caesars in 476, from 533 to 536, which were the popes of Rome, after the early church of Christ fell away for 1260 years. Consequently, the catholic DarkAges began in 536, the same year Justinian outlaws basic education, and that same year, the Bible became a closed Book. That law continued for a thousand years, until 1536. On May 29, 1453, the Turks sacked Constantinople, which was the final piece of the Roman Empire that fell. Ending the DarkAges/VolcanicWinters!

Popes were virtually non existent, until well after the Western Roman Empire fell in 476! The mark of the beast originated with the Caesars from 67 to 70 A.D. The image of the beast originated with the popes of Rome. The fall of the Byzantin Empire in 1453 kills the Romans!
