Flash Point History you are very imprecise in mapping Hungary, it encompassed the whole Carpathian Basin at that time when Frederick Barbarossa crossed through it. And he never went through Romania, which at that time didn't exist. His route was through Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Thrace.

I'm still in confusion about something. Why was Phillip so passive in allowing himself to be suboordinated by Richard when he arrived... What made Richard so obviosly senior? Then after Acre was captured why did Philip leave really? Seems to me he could have stayed and participated, and remained a big contender for powersharing in a recaptured Crudader Kingdom...

Amazing video - Saladin was undoubtedly a brilliant general, but since he never defeated Richard I in any battle, it truly shows what an amazing warrior king Richard truly was. Whilst Muslims like to glorify Saladin, we in the West rarely speak of Richard's accomplishments.

@@nickafanasyev6550 Yes it doesn't fit the bill. Genocide is the attempt to eradicated an ethnic or religious groups. While the prisoner were Muslim, their death was mainly a military decision as the Crusaders could not afford to feed them rather than a attempt to destroy an entire ethno-religious groups.

@1:32:34 What if Saladin's brother married Richard's sister and forged a combined ✝☪ kingdom? Could long lasting peace miracle for half world be possible by two man? Instead they returned home and were soon dead :(

It never would have lasted - their respective base support would never had allowed it to persist - this was nothing more than a diplomatic rouse

Watching such video is terrifying. Fighting day and night continously lots bloodshed all over. Those days those kings and soldiers are so brave and strong but they all have to die one day fighting with their enemies to capture their territory and lands I salute to all the warriors who shed their blood and tears inthe battle field.

So tragic that Barbarossa was lost by drowning. If he had lived and could have been united with the Austrians, English, and French etc., there would have been no problem. I had a German friend who recited a German poem to me about a German knight who was with Barbarossa through Turkey and was harassed by Turks firing arrows at him and his armor from behind the rocks. Apparently the Turk put himself off guard because the knicht was able to draw his sword and split the Turk in half from head to toe. What an age! Thank you for this video. It gives a rather complete explanation of the dynamics that were at play.

Every time I see images of the crusades, all I can think is 'not a cell phone in sight - just everyone living in the moment' - awesome comment btw

Tragic? None of us have a stake in this anymore, unless, for some reason, you think the crusades are still ongoing...

Richard the Lionheart defeated Saladan even though he was vastly outnumbered at the seige of Jaffa. Imagine what Richard could have accomplished if the HRE troops actually showed up?

In 1889 Wilhelm II visited Syria and he visited the Mausoleum of Saladin the following day, the Kaiser made a speech: “In the face of all the courtesies extended to us here, I feel that I must thank you, in my name as well as that of the Empress, for them, for the hearty reception given us in all the towns and cities we have touched, and particularly for the splendid welcome extended to us by this city of Damascus. Deeply moved by this imposing spectacle, and likewise by the consciousness of standing on the spot where held sway one of the most chivalrous rulers of all times, the great Sultan Saladin, a knight sans peur et sans reproche, who often taught his adversaries the right conception of knighthood” and he donated a sarcophagus and placed flowers on Saladin’s tomb after World War I, when the German-Ottoman alliance was defeated and both empires were destroyed, T.E. Lawrence stole the gilded wreath and brought it to London

Meh, I´d say he did ok, but I´m still sad that Liam Neeson didn´t play the role, as was the original plan. But alas, the studio wanted someone younger. Neeson would have brought much more gravitas to the character I think. Plus, wasn´t the historical Balian about the same age as Neeson was when the Last Kingdom came out?

Re Genocide, this is a 21st centaury definition, Richard and Saladin were 13th centaury, with totally different warfare mechanics and rules (for want of a better phrase). If Saladin had kept to his word then Richard I'm sure would have taken a different approach
