It'd be fun to see this told from the Native American's point of view where instead of land acquisition it's told in decades of land loss. "In 1763 we lost all of our land west of the mighty river to the British. And then in 1803 we lost the west side when the French sold our land to the United States without ever actually first buying the land from us; we called them invaders, they called themselves liberators."

You do realize some tribes teamed up with Europeans to eliminate other tribes. You should not be grouping all native Americans together.

The first permanent "European" settlement in "America" was Santo Domingo on the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic) in 1496. This was accompanied by the first of many brutal genocides of the Western Hemisphere's indigenous peoples by Europeans during the "Age of Discovery." In what is today the USA, settlement was attempted by rival factions of Spanish and French Huguenots. Just look up "History of Parris Island, SC."

Bernardo de Gálvez expelled the English and regained Florida for the Hispanic Monarchy in 1783, which was sold to the U.S. in 1819. Gálvez supported the American revolutionists to obtain independence from Britain. His biography is quite interesting. It is incredible how little Americans know about this fascinating historical character.

@Lukege15 Wikipedia has a good article on Mound builder ( people ) ( metal work / objects were found ) it says : " about 3500 BCE in present-day Louisiana, indigenous peoples started building earthwork mounds in North America nearly 1000 years before the pyramids were constructed in Egypt." ....." Hernando de Soto, ...who in 1540-42 .......observed people living in fortified towns with lofty mounds and plazas, and surmised that many of the mounds served as foundations for priestly temples. "

It would be really interesting some research of the history of Latin America, the evolution of their territories, the pre-columbian and advanced civilizations that existed for centuries in rich and prosperous regions, the arrival of Europeans first from Spain and Portugal, the development and economies of the Viceroyalties established since the XVI century, and their relationship with the British colonies. Cheers!!

One thing to keep in mind is that the English colonies were the only ones with a significant settler population. In 1650, New France had a population of about 3,000. New Netherland was between 2,000-3,500, with a large proportion of non-Dutch settlers. New Sweden varied between 70-350 over its short lifespan. Spanish settlements like St. Augustine and Santa Fe were forts with few permanent settlers. England's colonies, however, contained 50,000 people and were growing at a very rapid rate. By 1700, the population grew to 250,000, 1,000,000 by 1750 and 2,500,000 by 1776.

All people ever talk about is the conflict between native Americans, and European colonies. Yet hardly anyone ever talks about the conflict between European colonies, i.e Anglo-Dutch war. New York wouldn't be as prominint as it is today if it weren't for the dutch, yet they are rarely ever given the credit they deserve. Also, doesn't anyone find it strange that it took Spain so long to colonize Florida, and Portugal had no presence at all? It's like there is 100 year vacuum in U.S history.

Well, the French did two establishment attempts near the actual Jacksonville which were conquered by the Spanish. The first was Charlesfort in 1562 on Parris Island where Jean Ribault build a house. The second was Fort Caroline in 1564 containing a little village which would become St-Augustine after the Spaniards destroyed the first and conquered the second and decided to establish themselves. With Tadoussac in 1600, this makes the French the first colonial power to establish in North America.

This history class contains mistakes. Around year 1000, the Vikings settled in Quebec's L'Anse-au-Meadows and stayed there for almost a year. St-Augustine was founded by the French and then they were quicked out by Spain. Tadoussac is the first French permanent settlement in 1600. By the way, Verrazano gave the New-York site the name Nouvelle St-Angouleme before New Amsterdam was founded.

if you're asking had britain conquered parts of france, the answer is no. back then european wars were wars of grand alliances, with little change of borders in europe (peace agreement would end as exchange of titles), and these wars would spread to the colonies which were also traded. as britain was the strongest naval nation, it led to the creation of british empire

VC YT The reason why the Spanish and French colonies became backwater after their independences is because the French and Spanish didn't kill the native population like the English and later British did. If you take a look at Britain's "white colonies" (colonies where whites were the majority like Canada, Australia and New Zealand,) you will see that they are doing infinitely better than the other British colonies where the native population is the majority, like in Nigeria or in Belize.
@pedroromeiro3958
@pedroromeiro3958 8 жыл бұрын
Nop, that's not the reason. The reason was the way they colonized their colonies (Population Colonies X Exploration Colonies) where in the case of Australia, New Zealand and North America they didn't started the exploration at first, but they populated those places and created their own economy (that's why the majoritiy is white), on the oher hand in Exploration Colonies the economie was based on slave work and there was no economy in the colonie, all the money was brought back to the Metropolis and after the indenpendences poverty was everywhere.

Land acquisition by conquering invaders has been a reality throughout human history. The Romans did it to the Gauls. Consider the migrations of the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths and the Vandals or Attila the Hun who terrorized Eastern and much of Western Europe. What I find to be the most mindless thinking is the condemnation of the descendants of the invaders. For all of us our ancestors were either invaders or the invaded.

+Oscar Perez -- More like "broke." The English crown was impoverished compared to Spain, Portugal, or France, and almost no funds were available to support the few private endeavors at colonization. It also didn't help that the North American temperate zone had a hostile climate and no gold or silver to loot or mine. It wasn't until the English economy modernized and the Puritans organized a company with plenty of resources that English settlement took off.

Title should be "History of colonial U.S.A" Oldest euro settlement in the American Continent is in Venezuela and is called "Cumana" founded in 1501, when are these people going to learn that America is a continent, not a country. What's even funnier is that Cristobal Colon is credited with "discovering America" yet, he never ever set foot in the United States, he did not even come near it, not even close, well maybe just a tad, 90 miles and that was Cuba, then called Juana.

Someone please inform the makers of this video that there is something called "south", outside de US (yes, believe it or not, there is such thing as "outside the US"). And that "America" is the name of a continent, not of a country. When St. Augustine was founded, in 1565, Spain and Portugal had already founded many cities in South America and the Caribbean. So, it would be accurate to say that St. Augustine is the first city founded in the United States, but to say it is the first in America is just plain false.

That isnt totally correct your assumption, when she narrates she says John Cabot of England, thats cause he was commissioned by England for his expedition to the new world, thats what she is referring to. So techically she isnt wrong, as she narrates of where the exporers originated by their voyages. Like other Italian explorers, including Christopher Columbus, Cabot was commissioned by another country.
