Brings back memories. Originally I had only PC speaker which limited the sounds to very basic noises and no music. Had a friend to who soundblaster and would play occasionally at his house. It was so awesome! Eventually I got adlib which was only 1/2 way there but was an improvement! Have many fond memories of playing multiplayer over dial-up.

Thanks for the memory flashback. Back in the 90's I used to modify autoexec.bat and config.sys and put them on a boot floppy disk. I first had a PC with 4MB RAM which had lousy graphics. Then I got another PC which had 8MB RAM and great graphics. I used to play with a friend. We'd connect our two PCs with a cable using the serial and parallel ports. I've installed sound cards to improve the sound. We played Doom, Doom2, Ultimate Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and others. Great times.

The thing that GOT me into Doom was the story. I read a Doom novel as a kid and loved the story of the Doomguy going deeper into Hell. His descriptions of the horrors, his recognizing of the marines he found in his unit and how some of them turning into zombies fucked with his head, etc. His slow decent into madness, as he became less and less human as he got closer to hell himself. Was fantastic.

@w0lfyovi2944 жыл бұрын
@@christopheralthouse6378 I agree, I love the entire franchise, all the games since 1993. A return to the horror style would be so awesome, with all the improvements in lightning technology, ray tracking, incredible shadow renditions and details textures would make enemies so scarry. And for the flashlight mechanics make it like the first version but for single handed weapons (like the pistol, the cube, etc) one hand flashlight and the other the weapon. For the big guns just ambient light or even the weapon's on light effects (like the Plasma Riffle and BFG).

Doom II was one of the most defining games of my childhood and I have fond memories from around age 7 (back in 97') of learning how to setup a Serial Link between two PC's to play co-op and deathmatch with my Dad - which was probably the moment that sparked my IT interest and career today. Around that same time I met a kid at school who was also a huge Doom fan, and we would spend all lunch time talking about the game, and recreating the monster and guns sounds etc. One Saturday morning my Dad had said me and my friend could play over modem which got us super excited, and initially that took ages to setup due to us having to disconnect the internet, call each other so my Dad could explain what settings my friend had to configure, then both reconnecting to the Dial-up, creating the "lobby", and praying that it worked this time. That moment we both finally got into a game and could see and type to each other in the Entryway was SURREAL (I still remember being mildly upset that my Doomguy was Indigo instead of my favorite colour Green)

The Ultimate Doom and Doom II somehow feel the most scary and creepy. With the crucified half bodies on the walls, infernal drawings, impaled bodies... and that midi music. Some people try to make covers of the original Doom music, but automatically, with higher fidelity it loses its scary feel. Btw the cinematics in the post- Doom 2 games look cool, but on the other hand, it steals the moment of surprise and need-to-learn when encountering an enemy you've never met before. When I played Knee-deep In The Dead for the fist time, I remember how terrified I was when I finally entered Phobos Anomaly, right away I sensed that there will be something big behind the silence. And that scream of the Barons of Hell did justice to my pants later... Great video, thanks!

FYI carmack wrote 99% of the rendering pipeline for doom 2016 (idtech6). All the crytek guy did was add vulkan support. Idtech7 is identical (essentially) to 6. The only real difference in the rendering pipeline is the removal of megatextures and updating the vulkan function calls to the latest version. So it's still mostly Carmacks work. I only bring it up because it shows his absolute genius and he deserves credit for idtech7 even though he works at Oculus where he created some amazing magical math that keeps the Rift S controller tracking accurate even when the camera can't see them. Prior to the update he made it didn't work well when out of camera view but he wrote code that used the sensors in the controllers and some insane math

Yes, Nick! If I wanted to see the history of Doom by anyone, it'd be you. Top stuff. I played the original on an £800 66mhz Pentium (800 notes was a lot back in 1995). Doom 2016 absolutely nailed it. It's the best shooter in the last ten years, and also how Doom should be done. Fantastic

Great video, but some minor inaccuracies when it comes to consoles. The system was called the 32X, not the Sega 32. Also, Doom 3 did not release on Xbox 360 a year after the PC release, but rather the original Xbox. It wouldn't hit Xbox 360 (and PS3) until the BFD edition you mentioned years later.

Back in the 90s my middle school "business class" was just us playing _Doom_ in a computer room with our teacher supplying us the codes on laminated sheets. She did teach us other stuff, but the class was mostly that.

Since 1994 I've loved every doom game I've played and holy smokes the first time I played that VFR version blew me away for never having a VR head set on in my life, hell, I almost bought a PS4 just for that game.

Excellent job my man. I remember renting Doom 64 after I had bought Turok and GoldenEye, those games made playing Doom 64 hard to play. I felt like Doom 64 was a huge step backward and couldn't enjoy it. I recently gave it another go and completely loved it. It just came out at a time when tech was changing quickly, exactly what happened to Rage, great game it just felt outdated when it finally released.

The only Doom game I ever really played to completion was Doom 3. I'll admit, it was quite scary. I played some Doom game collections or something on the PS1, but only rented it like once or something.

All the original Doom games in my 20s. Doom3, 30s. Doom 2016 in my 40s, its beautiful but tough to watch. Fast paced stuff, my eyes are getting old! #1 fave? DOOM 3. the horror fps really did it for me

I really loved this look back at one of my favourite games of all time. It was full of facts and figures I didn't know. However, I would have liked to hear more of the game's AUDIO track, which was key to the gameplay. You focus on the visuals, weapons, and statistics, and that's cool, but if you played DOOM relentlessly as I did in the 90s, you'll appreciate that only by wearing a pair of headphones and sitting in a dark room could you experience that true sense of doom. The sound effects might have been basic, but they were one of the scariest and most successful elements of Doom I and II. Hearing enemies before you confronted them was incredibly effective. The audio track warned you what was to come. Regardless of graphics quality, those groans and growls in the dark, and behind closed doors, were what built the suspense. 25 years after I was hooked on Doom and eventually completed the game, the AUDIO experience is the key element of my enjoyment of this game. x

As a player of DOOM from pretty much the start, I would absolutely have to say DOOM 3 was among the best! The environment always ends up distracting me and I catch myself looking in every corner, no matter how many times I play through it. I have beaten doom 3 more times than any other game I own.
