Nice to see this. I was brought up in Flixton from 1945 to 1962 in 32 Goldsworthy Rd. In 32 and 34 were two sisters: my gran, Hilda Dodd, who raised me and Nellie (Helen) Peat (née Smethills) and their aunt Annie was the licensee of the Roebuck Inn when it was much smaller. Nellie was a post-lady and lived in Flixton all her life, until the grand age of 104. She had her 100th birthday in the Church Inn. As I walked her up the stairs, she pointed to an old photo with a little girl and her dolly's pram in it and said, "That's me. I think I was about six." I have a photo of Gt Gt Aunt Annie from a "daguerrotype" and a picture of the original Roebuck, if that's of any interest to you. My Grandfather, Bill Dodd, was one of the founder members of the UDMES in Chassen Park.

Oh how wonderful to see my old haunts as I remember them in the 50's. My original St Michael's school, the station and village how they were. A great walk down memory lane - many thanks to the producers of this excellent film

Thank you, this means so much to me even though I am not from this area. My late partner was born on Woodsend road in the 1950's and died there is 2018, I spent the happiest days of my life with him in Flixton/Urmston and he delighted in telling me the stories of his childhood and showing me his Flixton.

We are all just a flicker in time , and yet we need reminders like this beautiful, poignant compilation of our times and places in earlier days (we lived on Derwent Road,Flixton until 1974 when we moved to Wales and are now in Corfu). Along with the beautiful choices of accompanying music, this really touched me to the core-Thank you so very much to all involved .

Helen, Thank you so much for putting this archive together. Our local history is so very important particularly if like myself you have been born and bred and raised your own here. It is even more important given the current threat to our greenbelt , Fixton playing fields and what is left with a proposed development of 750 plus houses as was well supported today in our demonstration. We have to protect what little we already have left of our cherished open spaces and preserve our local history for the benefit of all and future generations.

Great photos of where our lads were born and where we lived for nearly 30 years. Although I did find it difficult to adjust from living by the sea. I found the people of Urmston so friendly, also the education system was great for the lads and so many National Parks in driving distance so we remained in Urmston until four years before our retirement

It’s gone from a lovely farming community to cheap buildings, people swearing on mobile phones, driving too fast, and the obvious thing that we all know but can’t talk about. Too many of them.

Thank you so much for a lovely walk down memory lane. As an Ex.Pat living in Florida for the last 25 years it made me very homesick. Must be time for a trip home! My parents owned Jacksons Newsagents and I grew up to run the one on Woodsend Rd at the Fox and Hounds. Would you remember our shops or are you too young ?
@gerardparker1483
@gerardparker1483 8 жыл бұрын
'course I remember Jacksons, though I though the shop was at Woodsend Circle. Didn't they take over the next shop- toys in one, news and sweets in the other? I was brought up in Lydney Rd, directly opposite the gate to Woodsend school.

Hey, Gavin I remember Jacksons, next to the Fox & Hounds, sadly it's now a supposed Dog Grooming / Care shop but always seems to be closed these days. Remember Jacksons well as a kid, went in there many times for the Hotspur comic in the mid 60's as used to live nearby. Remember J Evans the GreenGrocer? Cant remember the Butchers name, might have been Marsden?, I think Chemist was called Rosenburg a jewish family?, and there was a general Grocer's in the middle,cant remember their name either.

I do believe that your "current location" for the Old Red Lion is wrong. The Old Red Lion, to my understanding was built on the opposite side of Irlam Road, on the south east corner of what is now the junction of Irlam Road and Woodsend Road South, but was torn down and relocated in the early 1900's.
@mikeliv8827

No , the Old Red Lion stood next to the Co-op as far as I can recall, infact before the Care Home was built on the same site. The 2nd Red Lion public house was built on the same spot as the old former Red Lion was demolished. It was sited opposite the existing RC church to the best of my knowledge, most probably built in the early 1960's. This was later demolished to make room for the now new Care Home. I used to frequent the 2nd Red Lion pub on the odd occasion and have lived in the area for some 70 years.

Awww that was wonderful! It's so sad how they demolish everything and build new... I can actually remember cows on Flixton road when I was very small! Now they are trying to take the golf course on Chrurch road and part of the green belt... I hope they don't, they would be taking away something very valuable to us.

Hi Binx, from what I understand the former William Wroe golf course has been classed as Greenbelt. Don't forget it was the Labour councillors / |Kate Green Mp and others whom fought and won that battle, ie as of now to the best of my knowledge that land is now classed as 'Greenbelt' and can never be built on nor developed!
