Great video! One of the first that I've seen that delves into the account of King Aldgisl (or Aldgillis). This king is alledgedly buried in the town of Stavoren in the Netherlands. The frisian student association in Delft, called Aldgillis, still goes to his grave every year to honor his legacy!

My parents' families came to Canada in the 1950's, and we always refer to ourselves as dutch-canadians to regular people, but then adding "well, to be specific, Frisian-Canadians!" It is good to learn about our history and culture, especially when feeling a bit disconnected to the past. I would love to learn our language.

This comment was a delight to see, there were a lot of Frisians that moved to Canada yeah! Do you, by any chance, know if your ancestors emigrated to start a farm? And learning Frisian (or any language to be fair) is totally worth it!

@@BackgroundHistory that was the dream of both sets of grandparents, but it was not their reality. One side worked labour jobs with a house full of children, and the other side eventually landed a government job with a house full of children. Both sides experienced incredible amounts of stress recovering from WWll and then adjusting to a new country. A trip "home" may be in order after covid.

@yolisa dejager Ahh, too bad they didn't get to make their dream a reality. It's sadly what happened to a lot of folks who emigrated to the western hemisphere. Check out this video that goes in detail about Frisians who emigrated, it sadly lacks proper subtitles but you can turn on automatically generated subtitles: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnu0nXhvYqh4f9E If you do ever take that trip, I'd recommend a trip to the Oldehove (Friesland’s very own leaning tower) and the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, a visit to the Waterpoort in Sneek and the Eise Eisinga planetarium in Franeker! If you happen to be interested in agriculture, you might also like the Fries Landbouw museum. :)

Great video! As an East Frisian the stories of Radbod and Boniface have always resonated with me as a historical example of Frisians "sticking to their guns" in terms of identity

How could Rorik of Dorestad be acknowledged as ruler of Frisia in 841, by Charlemagne, when the latter had died in 814?

I'd say there never was a Magna Frisia. Like in the area now known as Lower Saxony, Frisians were divided in clans and lived in areas seperated by vast stretches of water. So Redbad and Aldgisl were, probably, wealthy leaders and dukes. Redbad most likely, maybe with some forefathers from present day Fryslan, was from Kinheim/Kennemerland. The least of Redbads concerns was the Frisian identity (which is a 19th century invention). Like every noble in the early middle ages he was all about wealth and keeping his status. Him switching alliances between the East and West Franks the battles for the possession of trading towns like Dorestad and Utrecht (both not Frisian in origin) and his disputes with other Frisian local nobles, like Addo Wursing (grandfather of Liudger) shows this. His baptism myth is most likely a piece of Frankish propaganda (portraying Redbad as a savage heathen) later used to create an Frisian identity and show how stubborn and true to his people he was. So the history of the whole of Friesland doesn't equal the history of Redbad and the parts of Frisia we now know as Holland and Utrecht. You could even argue if Redbad was Frisian in the modern sense. And that he was more Hollands.

Weet niet of het zin heeft om zoiets int Engels te doen. Denk dat vooral Hollanders en Friezen dit boeit.
