The Christmas I received HeMan, Skeletor and Castle Greyskull was a very special time in my life. These toys where so much different from anything I had played with in the past. I especially loved reading the mini comics, so I understood who the new character was, when I received them as gifts. Plus the accessories where bigger and didn't get lost as easy. It seemed with each new offering of figures that the excitement got stronger. Great Video and thank you for your time and effort in producing them.

My dad used to have a cinefilm camera and captured the moment in 1985 when I unwrapped a curiously big box on Christmas day to discover Castle Greyskull inside. I was four years old and couldn't believe what I was holding in my hands. It was the happiest, most vivid memory from my early childhood and it's caught on film. I'm 37 now and haven't seen the footage since I was around 20. I was suffering a bit from the 'coming of age blues' in my late teens and my dad helped me through it somewhat by dusting off the cinefilm projector, sitting me down and playing the Christmas day 1985 footage. Of all the techniques that helped me through those dark times, psychiatry, books, meditation...this was the one thing that connected me back to my own path. Thanks He-Man ha ha.

I have never forgotten getting Castle Greyskull in 1985. My very first two figures ever were Battle Armor He-Man/Skeletor I had to remove the castle from my collection in 1995 to move. In 2015 my mom found one in a resale shop. I got it for Christmas again 30 years later. And the collecting began. Minus I believe ti is called "Monstroid" I have all the original figures from the lines (Screw the Meteorbs or dino beasts") I have 2/3 of Etnernia. I did retain some of the figures from the 2002 series, and have been collecting the Revelations lines with a ferver. But the big collection is the re-issues of the last two years. Above the rest, I am going after these. They remain in their boxes, and are hung on the wall or shelved. And it was great to see that green skinned sorceress placed into this line recently. So both non-cartoon and cartoon figures are being done. Perhaps this will be the spot to get figures for Catra. Evil Seed, etc.

I'm a comic book artist and creator. I've always been into Thor, Hulk, batman ect. And I currently have over 70 characters of my own creation. But long before I was into marvel or DC it was all about He-man and the masters of the universe. I remember waking up on Christmas mornings still half asleep, bumping into walls as I made my way to the living room like a 5 yr old whino because my sister woke me up at like 5am screaming "Santa came!" Once I entered the living room my eyes would clear and light up brighter than any bulb (glass) on the tree. All the latest motu action figures would be lined up and castle grayskull and snake mountain fully assembled. And the cookies and milk we left Santa would be gone. Just a swallow of milk and a few cookie crumbs left. The excitement, and surprise was so overwhelming that our squeals of joy would wake our parents. Lol. Id play with them until id fall asleep on the floor in a nest of action figures, swords, shields and vehicles. I grew up and left all of those toys behind. But now I'm a husband, father and recently became a grand dad. I've started collecting the entire motu original vintage toyline. I have them in display cases, mounted on the wall like fine art because they represented such a wonderful time and a large part of my child hood. Thanks mom and dad. I love you

Hello again - thanks for another trip down memory lane. Between my younger brother and I, we acquired He-Man, Skeletor, Castle Greyskull, Trapjaw, Beastman, Man-at-Arms, Beast-Man, Man-E-Faces and probably a few others I've forgotten. I loved the mini-comic books that came with each figure, and the even the smell of the Masters of the Universe line was sort of unique (maybe it was something in the plastic, paint or boxes). Having said all that, I always had an issue with the quality - while the molding was great, the lack of articulation always struck me as weird, weapons/grips were terrible, and Castle Greyskull itself felt like an underscaled facade, nay a FARCE of the fantastic artwork on the box. Consequently, my brother and I would roleplay Masters of the Universe as SATIRE, where nothing ever went to plan or worked properly, and looking back I wouldn't have it any other way: it was like a premonition of Robot Chicken, all those years ago!

Great video as always. MOTU was my toyline growing up (other than Lego and a few other things, it was the only one I really collected). I've been a life-long, hard-core fan and still am to this day. The first two waves and the early "barbarian" mythos (there was no Prince Adam, originally) have always been my main love. As much as I respect Princess of Power as part of the universe, I felt it watered the line down, making it too girly and young-child friendly, and with that and more gimmicky later figures it eventually killed the line, in it's original form at least. To note though, even though Roger Sweet is mentioned, it was Mark Taylor who came up with the earliest designs of what would evolve into He-Man, Skeletor etc. (from stories he created in his youth). It's always been debated, but Sweet formed the "MOTU" concept of these but in many's opinions also swept up the claim to having created these many characters (Taylor developed his early ideas into all of the characters of the first and most of the second wave); Taylor is the 'true' creator of Masters of the Universe.

Great review as usual! But no mention of the highly sought after Eternia playset? I believe it was the largest playset ever made next to the FLAGG. I vaguely remember getting some He-Man figures with the mini comics when I was younger, and then what seemed like an age later a cartoon appeared. I can still recall being confused that the character in the cartoon and the min-comics didn't match. Is it possible they changed his origin story to distance themselves even more from the Conan connection after the lawsuit? Mattel were really smart with their re-use of bodies in the line. The figures both matched each other (Ram Man was an exception) and were made highly distinct with use of colour and differing powers. I remember when the She-Ra line come out the He-Man line was already starting to slowdown and was losing ground to competitors like Transformers and GI Joe. She-Ra was too doll-like for me, and I recall not wanting the toy for that reason, even though I watched 'Secret of the Sword' (I suspect she may have been a Barbie cast-off re-use). The whole She-Ra thing and the constant re-use of the same characters with minor tweaks started making the line seem repetitive and less appealing. Just like you said; the first 2 years were great and near perfect. I always wanted Panthor...
@sir_john_hammond6 жыл бұрын
The changes were purely for their "pro-social" messaging. Which included the beginning of gay acceptance in very subtle form. It's an open secret that many of the people at Filmation were themselves gay or bi. Mattel probably went along with it just because it suited them financially.
@RockandrollNegro6 жыл бұрын
I never picked up "pro-gay" subtext from the MOTU cartoon. I think that the move from pure barbarian sci-fi made the most sense, both creatively and financially. You have to think that it had only been a few months since this type of cartoon could legally be aired due to deregulation of children's programming, so all critical eyes were on MOTU. You couldn't have the main protagonist running around kicking the shit out of other living beings, so they had to go with the social awareness angle in order to bring an ethical lesson to each episode. Even though He-Man only used his sword against robots and any mild violence was done for comedic effect, you still see the controversy that surrounded the show from parents groups and Christian fundamentalists. While there's no doubt that Filmation had a lot of homosexuals staffed (as do all facets of the entertainment industry) I think any subliminal gay acceptance messages would have been picked up right away considering the minute scrutiny that was being placed on literally every cel of animation being broadcast. The ultra-fine toothed comb would have scraped away the queer in five seconds flat, so any gay subtext that is picked up is likely a reflection of the viewer's own insecurity about their own sexuality.

@AnalogToys7 жыл бұрын
Tim Chorle yeah I just think it’s a case of brand saturation after a while. That along with the emergence of other popular brands like transformers and ninja turtles
@pjgathergood69877 жыл бұрын
I've posted my thoughts on this before now (and on my own comment to this video) but I think the line became too watered down and unfocused, more interested in the next "quick gimmick" characters to sell over focus on the direction of the line. Add to that Princess of Power (very girly and young-child friendly) and maybe the (excellent) Filmation series being a bit TOO squeaky clean... the line had moved a long way from it's edge, barbarian-like roots (the era of the franchise of which I most adore, pre-Prince Adam). I've always believed if this earlier, edgier (but still kid friendly) vibe had been retained, and developed, the line would have had much more mileage still. As it was, by the late 80s/early 90s it was seen as very "childish" (yes, it's a children's franchise but you get what I mean) and is the sad reason it lay dormant for much of the 1990s.
@timchorle7 жыл бұрын
Good feedback! I like how you've tied in some of the TV Show problems into the analysis.. when I compare it to the beloved "TMNT" there seems to be a a divide of sorts in my memory; perhaps that slight edge you mentioned.
@sir_john_hammond6 жыл бұрын
The elephant in the room here is that the franchise just kept getting more openly and blatantly gay, first with prince Adam in pink tights, but by the time She-Ra came along it was full blown, with Bow and whatnot. I am sure a lot of parents steered their kids away from it and gladly bought other toy lines instead, like TMNT.
@katherineberger63296 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem with the She-Ra line was that it was neither fish nor fowl, I think. The girl factor could easily have been overcome if Standards & Practices hadn't cracked down hard on the use of fighting in her show. A lot had to do with the movie. The movie had some intentional wide variations in character design and in the supplementary characters, wherein they almost universally ignored characters from the popular Filmation cartoon in favor of underdeveloped inventions of Cannon Films (which also had to skimp on production costs because of judgments from the 1983 conviction of one of their major creditors for using Cannon as a money-laundering scheme); and serious missteps that would be sadly repeated in the following year's Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. A number of very bad misreadings of the room cost Cannon Films their existence, culminating in the truly wretched Cutthroat Island which destroyed pirates as a genre until Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Additionally, store monitoring techniques of the mid-to-late 80s had not kept up with just-in-time inventory which had become an important development in the 80s; Mattel surveyed what their retailers had in stock and figured that these items were what they needed to make more of for a crucial year (1986), this resulted in poorly-moving, unloved figures like Moss Man and Stinko sitting on the shelves for months at a time while the core characters of the line (He-Man, Man-at-Arms, Teela; Skeletor, Evil-Lyn and Beast Man) were virtually impossible to find. Making matters worse, 1986 was a fantastic year for the G.I. Joe line and a pretty good one for Transformers; both of which had major refreshes either out (G.I. Joe) or waiting in the wings (Transformers).
