History of Microtransactions in World of Warcraft

Microtransactions are something that has become almost a guarantee in games these days, however back in the days of 2004 when wow first launched, they weren't even a thought.. or were they? And of course, for the purposes of this video, a micro transaction is an in game item that is either made easier to obtain or is only obtainable through a real money purchase.

The European only murloc wasn’t really given as a bug. My memory may be a little hazy after nearly 15 years but if I recall correctly due to a production error the EU Burning Crusade collector’s editions didn’t come with a code to redeem the pet (by mistake the CD key was indistinguishable from a regular edition). As a result to redeem your pet Blizzard decided you had to mail them proof of purchase and I think cut out the barcode from the paper sleeve and then wait several weeks for them to add it to your account. The murloc was given to European players to make amends for the screw up. Source: I am an owner of European collector’s edition.

Correct, there were production issues with the Euro version of TBC's Collectors Edition that required players to mail the barcode from the packaging to Blizzards offices in France to get their Netherwhelp. The Murloc pet was also given to players as an apology. IIRC the issue was that the codes to get the pet weren't actually included in the EU versions.

There is 1 other way to get some of those TCG pets/mounts in game, which is the Black Market Auction House. I know I recently saw the rocket chicken there. That said, you'll also be bidding absurd amounts of money against other players, if you're lucky enough to even see it come up, so odds are slim that you'll actually get it.

BMAH has a few of the mounts/pets but goblins will buy out the pets to make a profit and mounts will go to near goldcap with some people offering transfer services to move a 60 to another server and be given 10million gold to buy any item they want

Exactly. I am 6 minutes in and he has only mentioned I think 2 legit microtransactions so far. Things like the collectors editions, TCG, and BlizzCon stuff is 100% not microtransactions because you aren't buying the in-game thing. You are buying something else and getting the in-game thing with it (free or not is debateable). By his seeming definition, WoW, the game, is a microtransaction itself because you are only buying a box with physical things inside and just happens to also contain a game.

The Celestial Steed came out on April 15th 2010 which was well before Ruby Sanctum which came out in June 2010 and still part of Wrath. Besides checking on Wikies about patch contents i just had to look in my purchase history on my wow account to see the date. I know Cata system patch came out in Oct of that year ( one of the saddest days in wow hostory) and Cata in Nov but i guess its the same year but not the same

If we want to get all technical on dates here - while Wrath content became integrated into the basic sub in Oct 2010 (meaning people could play Wrath that didn't buy the expansion), the Shattering didn't happen until Tuesday the 23rd (an event I remember vividly as I had been on a mission to redo vanilla quests on an alt before this and had just finished an hour before maintenance, plus my b-day was on Thanksgiving that year), and Cata itself launched on Dec 7 of 2010.

10:00 Not a major thing but back then, the rag pet used to set nearby critters on fire could be used for cooking (like a campfire) and more importantly, the XTpet used to smash that stupid train people could buy in dalaran that made anyone nearby constantly do the /train emote. Which was a nightmare in auction houses and raids.

It was a huge mess and ended up with content creators getting in first and regular joe-blows left out until later - like always. I bought the package the day it was announced. Reign of Fire was the last expansion of the TCG, although it didn't have any exclusive loot card to it, only reprints from older sets and the chance to find the God Pack containing 15 loot cards

It's worth noting that some of these 6 month promotions had to be manually claimed. For example, I took a break before legion and apparently still had a 6 month sub rolling each year. While i did hop on and play a bit through each expansion, I never got the dreadwake or the butterfly transmog because i guess i never claimed them. probably some others, but those came to mind.

The meat wagon mount The gyphon+windrider cub plushies that gave pets The currency you got for reedeeming TCG cards that then allowed you to buy specific items. And even in a way, the recruit a friend mounts or scroll of ressurection mounts. Of course you could ACTUALLY get them for free f you invited a friend, but we all know most people just bought them on sale for themselves.

You missed the scroll of resurrection. It was back around the time of Cata/MoP and would give a spectral version of the gryphon/wind rider, depending on your faction. You would get this by purchasing subscription time, similar to the 6months mounts that we get today. The only difference was that your subscription must have lapsed within a specified timeframe, so it was mostly to try to reclaim lost players. There is also an argument that the recruit a friend benefits are microtransactions because the recruited person would have to pay money in order for both players to receive the in game goodies.

i had the tcg cards for the ethereal and partygrenades. you may should have added that on the tcg website you were able to register boosterpack codes seperate to the lootcards, wich when reached a certain amount were able exchange for things like tabards. those were recolored versions of the original tcg one wich was red came in yellow, grey, green, orange, purple, white and blue

It still pisses me off that the "celebration" of the 15 year anniversary is just more microtransactions. I get the price of a statue but the mounts REALLY shouldnt have cost anything since they're just recolours of existing mounts. Around the same time Riot had their 10 year anniversary and they handed out free stuff including free exclusive cosmetics only made for this event. Bobby raises the bar every year and doesnt even has the guts to show the subsciption numbers.

This is true if you want the specific item. But unlike the TCG items the wow store items have no real world value. As a guy who loves to invest I would prefer the tcg items, over the store items which give you no profit in return. But that’s just me
