CORRECTIONS: - A lot of the Hermitcraft adjacent SMPs and youtubers were left out - Dream SMP ended for a variety of other reasons I didn't mention, including Technoblade's death - Scripted SMP content stopped being made because kids content was more profitable - wow that dream joke did not age well

Grian's __ Life SMP series definitely deserves recognition. It's a simple but unique premise, and the way that all the storylines emerge completely on their own, without scripting, is amazing. Also, Empires. All of the scripted roleplaying of the DSMP with very little of the drama and toxicity. While we're on that topic, X Life/Origins/Afterlife/New Life. That shit slaps.

Hermitcraft is just perfect in almost every aspect and is actually a very peaceful server with mature and entertaining members. There are several OGs like Docm77 and Ethoslab. KZbin Giants like Mumbo and Grian. And overall, a great person who manages the sever and has amazing leadership skills, Xiumavoid. RIP to TinFoilChef, we lost him a few months ago, truly a Hermit. ❤

As some who was really into the Dream SMP, I feel as if the fanbase didn't die from Jikishi, but more of from Technoblade's passing and 3 of the main members (Ranboo, Tubbo, and Tommy) gradually stopping making content together. Technoblade especially though impacted it, as most of the people I've seen in the fandom left after his passing and the remaining few left after Dream's grooming accusations.

I'd say it also had a few other factors mainly: -End of lockdown so far less time to watch the streams, especially if in another timezone and watching multiple vods takes a lot of time and isnt as enjoyable as it would be to be live in the chat -most viewers were around 12-14 when the smp started and towards then end were around 16. This meant they were no longer blindly defending themselves and creators to every negative comment as they could take criticism of their favourite creator for what it is which can sour their opinions of them, as well as ya know 3 years of defending themselves and the creators from constant hate -The lore was the main appeal but it pretty much stopped. -Lore that did remain was far more fragmented and hard to keep up with as most people didnt even know it was there as most streams were just building or mining or something you could get from any other streamer. -No community interactions or content (eg, nothing new to theorise about or talk about it pretty much just left drama/controversies, people asking/talking about when it'll continue again, and fanart which does spark some interest for a while but thats only a short burst of interest and is far more limited as even SAD-ist's dsmp animations couldn't get the same views as say tommyinnit's most popular lore would as amazing as their work is)
@thetele8646
@thetele8646 Жыл бұрын
@@lunaangel4236to me the DSMP was really fun in the beginning and maybe mid way through but when it became too lore oriented and scripted, I stopped watching it. Like around the egg thing arc or after Tommys exile. I really liked the lmanburg shit before the elections when it was just Wilbur, Tommy and the war. After that it was just a gradual downward slope.

This is amazing!!!! This must have taken a lot of time to research. And I'm sorry to say this, but another factor that somewhat caused the DSMP to not continue was Techno's death. Once he died, nothing was going to be the same. Ph1lza and Nikki saw this after Dream brought up the fact for the next season that everyone had to forget their memories of Techno. Which cause them to basically say no, I'm not forgetting everything that he did on this server. Causing them to be the second and third person to quit. After they left, other people began to see this problem, causing a chain reaction.

Really cool video, it’s so interesting to see how lots of smaller SMPs either have led to/were a cause of other SMPs. Surprised there wasn’t more coverage on the Hermitcraft side of things - especially with the 2 related series of Empires SMP and The Life SMP (Third/Last/Double/Limited Life)

@@brianseegmiller1433 Life SMP is not "every SMP in existance", though. It's one of the most popular SMPs of modern Minecraft youtube. Way more popular than many of the ones he mentioned. I've barely even heard of Lifesteal and QSMP(which are still very beloved and deserve to be on this list, don't get me wrong). I think the thing with all those series you've mentioned, they're all made by the same general friend group as makes Hermitcraft (/Empires). At the end, he described 3 SMPs co-existing harmoniously, when you might suggest that it could be more accurately described as three friend groups co-existing harmoniously, as I'm sure Lifesteal and QSMP also have "spinoffs" too. Actual, nvm, he calls them communities, not specific servers. So, yeah, by mentioning the Hermitcraft community, he didn't really need to mention the others you thought of.
@ZZZ-uy8zq

@@mastertrams So mentioning Dream SMP was unnecessary, since most of the people who made Dream SMP were from the SMP Live/SMP Earth community?
@mastertrams
@mastertrams Жыл бұрын
@ZZZ-uy8zq Again, not as familiar with that side of the community, but my understanding from the video is that DreamSMP was more of a pre-cursor to SMPEarth, and isn't actually current. Whereas Hermitcraft is so ancient that there wasn't really a true pre-cursor... Though I think one was sort of mentioned right at the start of the video, though can't remember what it was. Idk, maybe I'm just digging myself a hole, but that seems to make some sense to me.

I stuck around the DreamSMP mainly because of the roleplay. I don't know if the other SMP's had the same aspect, but the fact that after Wilbur joined they started organizing plots and storylines with scripts and people playing characters drove by immaterial motivations rather than just competition to see who is the strongest, was really something that I miss. I still remember how cool was it that Tommy or Quackity would go on to do their character's projects even if they were wearing some iron boots and having only stolen items on them, to move the story forward, yet you still had Technoblade (RIP king) or Ph1lza who you could watch if you wanted to see them grinding as the pros they were.

It should definitely be up there as one of the most iconic Minecraft SMPS and literally 2 of the top 3 twitch streamers in 2015/16 got their viewers FROM Mianite (Syndicate & CaptainSparklez). The youtubers on there are some of the biggest Creators on the platform today and have mostly moved on from Minecraft including people like Preston, JeromeASF, Lachlan, Ali-A, BajanCanadian, Vikkstar123, PeteZahutt etc. I know not everyone watched this but I think it had a relatively big impact on the community at the time, especially because interest in Minecraft was fading

As twitch later became the fundamental website for most minecraft SMP content, it feels like SMPLive and consequently DreamSMP capitalized on how well smp content works on twitch and streaming as a whole

Great video, although you did forget about some SMP's. Heres a few that were forgotten: - Content SMP - They have one of my favorite ideas for a SMP. The Youtbubers can add mods to the server and also make mods - FoolCraft - Modded, Has Iskall85 and Xisumavoid and some others from hermitcraft - Empire SMP - Very cool building SMP with the same level of story as the Dream SMP, also has a crossover with Hermitcraft - Last Life SMP - Limited Lives, Boogyman is selected every once in a while - The Ripple Effect SMP - 20 smaller content creators in a smp - MineCrack - Although a Old SMP it was probably the first SMP many long time viewers saw - Mianite SMP - Not entirely sure but I hear it was a good one - SciCraft - You know that video where you see the million mobs come out of a farm. That but more mobs the SMP - Vault Hunters - This covers a few diffrent SMPS. Currently Iskall85 is running a Vault Hunter SMP that is very well done - Evolution SMP - SMP that started in the earliest version of minecraft and progressed versions over time - Legacy SMP - Lore/Fantasy SMP - Orgins SMP - SMP with Mod that gives players specal ability based on Orgin Chosen These are some of the more notable SMPS I can recall.

More so than the reasons mentioned in the video, the biggest reason for the Dream SMP going downhill was because Covid started to ease up. While everyone was in lockdown, KZbin and twitch blew up in terms of active users per day. That brought the perfect opportunity for the dream SMP to blow up. Then you include the storylines. Once the major storylines ended, and the world opened back up, that’s when the Dream SMP closed down

Disagree that most of the dream smp fans moved over to lifesteal. Most of them either continued watching those creators and QSMP, or moved over to watching the hermitcraft side of things (especially the Life Series, which had a huge overlap with dream smp fans)

I find it silly that he never mentions that any multiplayer server that runs in survival counts as an smp, whether you are popular, or are just trying to have some fun with a friend group.

**Long comment:** While the Lifesteal SMP in itself is a good server, it has had a bad effect on small smps and the Minecraft community (in my opinion). Now, there are so many random Minehut servers copying lifesteal and they are all so toxic and full of sweaty pvp kids that try to act cool. And that effects players too. Like I own my own smp, and some little kids filled it up and treat it like it is lifesteal and try to cheat to get gear because they feel inclined that they have to be the most powerful and kill everyone. As a result, the fun of PvP gets sucked out if everyone has maxed out netherite and grind till 4:00 AM. It also brings lots of toxicity and people believing that all minecraft servers have to be complete chaos. Like my friend in my SMP betrayed and killed me (it is allowed in the rules btw its just a smp with no gimmicks/rules except no cheating or over the top toxicity) and when I asked him why, his only argument was "this is how mc servers are supposed to be like". He was someone who liked lifesteal and played some minehut smps. And kids like this are everywhere, believing they are PvP legends. These little obnoxious devils used to populate hypixel and bedwars, now they are moving to SMPs. Like on my server, it used to just be a few people and we were all chilled out with a small non-stakes fight every now and then. this did get boring, then all the little devils joined in quick succession. at first, it was fun, but then it got toxic real quick then and having netherite was no longer something special and people were constantly blaming the admins including me for all their problems, then because of this, a bunch of people quit because of the "toxic community" when they did it to themselves. then, afterward they go "your server was terrible anyway its s**t lol" when they did it to themselves. then, the server died out for a bit, but now the server is in its best phase! now, we regularly peak at 5 players daily and its pretty chill, and if a conflict does happen it actually has a reason to happen instead of just some kids thinking they are funny (also if any of you want to join my smp you cant unless someone on my server personally invites you, and the first people on my server are people i know irl and they invite other people they know) (also my server has more than an smp it also has minigames and events that are all unique to the server)

A really interesting watch, though I will say as someone who's been in fandoms and is now in the hermitcraft fandom that "character x reader" gross erotic fanfics and things are nothing new and I don't think they're new to minecraft fandoms either (unfortunately). I do think its interesting how minecraft smp videos have evolved, and in some way I do miss the more simple Let's Play videos like Hermitcraft, which seems to be one of the few SMP video series' that have stood the test of time and keep with the original format. Not to say the Lifesteal SMP videos are bad or anything, I get why people are resorting to catchy clickable or awesome ideas and I don't blame them, plus I watch a lot of those videos too. It's just kinda interesting and maybe a little sad to see the evolution of these videos and how if you wanna grow your fanbase usually the older lets play format doesn't really work much.

Hermitcraft definitely had the weird fanfic before and the obsessive behavior. a lot of things people claim started with the dsmp fandom actually originate in the hermitcraft fandom, both good and bad. We just had many years longer to sort our shit out so we seem more chill.

Great summary video, fast-paced but definitely not too overbearing. I would say though, you did forget to mention a lot of important servers, mainly Empires and the masterpieces that are Grian's short-running Life Series SMPs. The latter managed to tap into what Dream SMP tried dabbling into - Creating the kind of emotional stories that would bring forth a community of passionate, talanted artists and animators that would further strengthen the hype surrounding the series and create more content for the fans to enjoy. All that, But with one big and very crucial difference - Life Series is not scripted _(or even if it is, it'd be VERY loosely so),_ allowing for insanely fun, genuine and iconic interractions to take place. I'd say the three visionaries of modern Minecraft SMP space were Dream _(No matter how much I dislike him I can't deny he was innovative),_ Parrot and Grian. They truly shaped the world of Minecraft survival multiplayer content as it stands right now. Also just as a quick mention, I couldn't be gladder about the fact that Hermitcraft is still thriving to this day despite the frankly bad changes that the KZbin content creation space has suffered over the years, with the whole MrBeast-ification and obnoxious sensory overload editing to keep the toddlers entertained. Out of the mindless heaps of trash that is Modern Minecraft content, Hermitcraft (And The Life Series by its side) stands strong as a beacon of what Minecraft content looks like at its peak!
