I just happen to watch your documentary the “History of the Caribbean” and I find it, at least, very much incomplete. I am confuse by your presentation - I would rather call it “History of the English, Dutch and French Caribbean”. It seems that the Spanish, the larger area of this region, is absent by your account - you hardly mention the Dominican Republic and, especially, "Cuba." The rich history, the important music and plastic arts, among other contributions of this island nation, are undoubtedly significant when presenting the history of the Caribbean basin.
@WorkingTitleMedia7 жыл бұрын
Hi orvla3 - We are sorry that you found the History of the Caribbean incomplete. There is so much rich history in the Caribbean, if only we had the money to produce a series. Then we could have covered so very many more details. Thank you for your comments, we appreciate all feedback. From Connie Jennings, producer.

Why the hell are these people explaining our history?? And adding their spin on it. Since when was the language of Barbados or Jamaica called creole? And explaining about the African drum? I cant continue to watch this...i cant.....
@edmundlinton5 жыл бұрын
Créole encompasses all aspects of culture, language, cuisine, etc based on mix of continental influences. In reference to linguistics, Germanic and Latin based languages that spread across the Caribbean during the colonial era, are very much supporting the nature of creole due to their unique mix of old and new world crossovers. To put it simply, there exist both French creole where you can find on Martinique, and English creole from Barbados.

Well, tell me what non-European people were doing that before Europeans? You are suggesting that no one who isn’t native has a right to tell the history; and that if they do that it is not accurate. That is nonsense on your part by its own. But additionally you have not pointed to even a single thing that is in the documentary which you believe to be false. Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders were saved by black Buffalo soldiers who did most of the initial fighting in Cuba for the Rough Riders and saved them from catastrophe at San Juan Hill. Roosevelt initially expressed his gratitude on record to many sources, but then later, when running for office published The Charge on San Juan Hill, which characterized the whole event like it was a minstrel show, making himself look heroic and African-Americans inept. The whole thing is another dark spot on how African-American accomplishments are often downplayed in white history books. I did research on this subject going through university library peer-reviewed sources and publications so I know what I am talking about. The omission of pictures of companies of black US soldiers is regretful, further feeding the misconceptions and perceptions or our collective history as a people.

The Old world = Europe and Africa.. what dude? Asia and the Indian Ocean was the main world market and europeans needed the resources of the new world to become a competitior there, even if the portuguese and the Dutch had warred there way to trade there for many years before the silver and gold started to flow from the mines of Mexico and Peru. So Asia dominated the world trade, and Chinas empire would uphold this until the brittish started warring with steel ships driven by steam in the 1800s - also before and after the OPIUM.

Boy, there a sure a lot of folks who are really angry over events that occurred hundreds of years ago. Yes, of course, the problems of today have their foundations in the past, and past injustices and crimes still oppress many, if not most, people today. This video is a very brief summary of the history of the area, and so does not examine -all- the issues that commenters have raised. But most of the objections are unnecessarily harsh, some are quite personal, attacking the face of the person presenting, who is after all, an actor hired to read a script. If you're upset or offended by this gloss-over of history, feel free to write a script, offer your research and sources, produce a video and fill us all in on what you know. Many of the assertions made here by commenters are obviously inconsistent with established fact or are flat out made up stories to assuage hurt feelings. It's not a cultural insult to say that one group conquered another, that's human history all over the planet. Historical facts are not a personal insult to you or your origins. We're never going to get together as humans if we constantly assault one another verbally over issues that are no longer relevant to today's problems. Want to know the history of the Caribbean? Read a goddam book! Or even two!

Originally South America was part of the African continent. West Africans fishing in large groups with their families 20 thousands years ago & prior would easily end up in the Americas in just about a week out at sea. This certainly explains why the Olmec heads look the way they do. Africa & South America continues to move away from each other about 2cm per year.

Africans did make it to South America, but it wasn't apart of the African continent. Some scholars believe the Olmecs were a mix of Asian and African people . I tend to believe they were more African only based off facial structure. But, a mix between the two could very well be. Scholars believe Chinese people came from Africa , so this is a strong possibility.
