HISTORY OF THE EARLY MAFIA IN THE USA

The Italian Mafia of the United States is one of the most famous criminal organizations in the world. Dozens of films have been made and hundreds of books written about it, but there are only a handful of works that describe the early history of what would later become the Cosa Nostra.
Mostly the reason why the things were like this was the influene of the lack of sufficient and reliable information about that period. Because of this the story of the appearance of the Mafia on the American continent, written during the information vacuum and still being replicated by mass media as the only true one, in practice is more of a myth than the real picture of what happened.
But fortunately for us, by now the researchers have received enough information about the circumstances to recreate more accurate history of that period.
So if you're interested in what Cosa Nostra was really like in its infancy in the United States, then give a reception, The Becoming of the New York Mafia, On the Other Side of the Law.

This is a great history of the whole ball of grease. And tho' I did enjoy the visual background of video from gangster movies like the Godfather, I would've preferred to see still photos of whatever or whoever was being talked about. That was done much of the time but many times it was not, and it could have been. All in all, an excellent TRUE history of the early Italian & Sicilian organized crime gangs/families of Nee York.

It's the late 20s. New York is devided, between two Big Bosses, who are preparing their campaigns for war. The one is Capo dei Capi (in fact in name only, already from the mid of the decade), Don Salvatore "Toto" D'Aquila, based in Brooklyn. The other is, Don Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" Masseria, who's heading the biggest Borgata in the city and buldind a big network of allies-lieutenants across the country. In 1927, D'Aquila's lieutenant in Cleveland, Joe Lonardo, is gunned down by Salvatore Todaro, Masseria's lieutenant. Now, Cleveland belongs to Joe the Boss. The Dons are continiuing their "backround moves". Until 1928, one of the years, which will mark the Honorata Societa forever, D'Aquila manages to bribe Masseria's long-time Brooyklyn caporegime, Frankie Yale, to side with him and betray his Godfather. Also D'Aquila makes a strong alliance with Chicago's Godfather (and Al Capone's advisor & partner) Antonio Lombardo. Lombardo tries to persuade Capone, to stop paying tribute to Masseria (Capone wasn't made Masseria's capodecina yet). However Al, doesn't agree. He knows, that he can't side against Joe the Boss. Also, he has huge respect for the Boss, not only due to his Power, but because, back in the early 20s, before Al came to Chicago, it was Masseria who had saved him from death, solving the dispute between him and another gangster (the "scarface" thing). So, the loyal Al, tippes-off his Boss about Lombardo and D'Aquila. Meanwile, Masseria is preparing the death of the traitor Yale. He already knows about it, because he has D'Aquila's own underboss, Al Mineo with him (it wasn't difficult, because D'Aquila had been unfair with him) and Yale's second in command, Anthony Carfano. The time comes. The guns are ready. July 1st. Capone's hit-men, paying a "touchy" visit to Yale. September 7th. Lombardo is ambushed alongside with one of his two bodyguards, Tony Ferreta. The other bodyguard, unscratched, hunts down the killers, shooting at them, but not managed to hit them. His name is Joe Lolordo. His bother, Pasqualino Lolordo, with Capone's help, succeds the deceased Lombardo as the new head of the Chicago Family. And guess what??? He was under Joe the Boss. He even attended at Masseria's Coronation as the Capo dei Capi, at the Hotel Statler in Cleveland. Probably a coincidence... October 10th. Salvatore D'Aquila himself, is gunned down, out of his doctor's office, by a squad of his undeboss, Al Mineo, on the orders of Joe "the Boss" Masseria. It's quite possibly, that Giuseppe Morello was one of the gunmen, because D'Aquila was his biggest enemy. The war is over. The victor, the Great Capo dei Capi, Don Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" Masseria, is now officially, the King of New York. And with the death of the jewish kinpin Arnold Rothstein, on November 6th (he was shot on 4th, on the Boss's orders-Dutch Scultz took the contract), Joe the Boss is the undisputed Dominance in the whole US Underworld!!!

What you're saying about Joe the Boss, is total crap and dishonor. The Boss, was the Most Powerful Godfather, America has ever seen. Let me tell you, a couple of 3 things. After Morello's inprisioment, maybe Terranova was the acting boss, but infact, it was the Boss who was running the streets for the Borgata (Family). During that time, the most powerful of the Godfathers, was former Morello's top lieutenant (caporegime), Salvatore "Toto" D'Aquila. He was based in Brooklyn, but had influence to the majority of New York. The Boss at the time, was not afforded an all out war with D'Aquila. After Prohinition however, the Morello Borgata had got more Power, certainly, due to the Boss's strong street leadership. In 1922, Morello was paroled by the USA President himself (he probably got a "black hand" card). As obvious, he wanted to took his Empire back. D'Aquila, saw the threat, and immediately, ordered the death, of Morello, Teranona and of course, the street-boss's of the Borgata, Masseria. The one who took the contract, was one of D'Aquila's top lieutenant & one of the most feared men in New York, Umberto Velenti. Velenti, along with his squad, went to whack the Boss in public. The assassins started shooting, killed Joe's bodyguards and hunted him. They fired at him, but the Boss, started some "special moves" and avoid all the bullets. The assassins, shocked, run away, to avoid the cops, and because the people hunted them, they fired on them. After this event, Joe Masseria was now, "the Man who can dodge the bullets". It was revenge's time. The Boss, sent a message to Velenti, to have a sit-down, for discussing his "retirement". Velenti bought it. In the meeting, there were Velenti and three soldiers of his and three soldiers of the Boss. They started eating, waiting for the Boss. After he was too late, Velenti realised it was a set-up and everybody pulled out his guns. It was a real western, which ended with Velenti and his men, dead on the streets. Allegedly, the one who shot Velenti dead, was Salvatore Lucania or best known, Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, who recently was recruited by the Boss. After Velenti's elimination, D'Aquila lost Power and Masseria got way stronger. It was then, that Morello realised, that the Leader who could reclaim the Family's Throne, was his loyal capo, Joe. So he stepped down as the consiliere and Joe became (and officialy), the Boss. Until the mid 20s, the Boss had became the most Powerful Godfather in NY, but D'Aquilas still, held the title. Let's go now, to the "Golden Year" for Joe the Boss's Dominance over the US Underworld, 1928. The Boss, finally decided that he will take over everything, the whole f#ck**n country. To achieve that though, he had to get rid of some obstacles. July, Al Capone took out Frankie Yale on the Boss's order (they had their own dispute). As a reward, the Boss got Al made (besides he wasn't Sicilian, but Napolitean-the Boss, had some others non-Sicilians Italians in his Family, like Vito Genovese and Frank Costello). In October, the "Big Day", it was D'Aquila's time to check-out. A squad head by Morello and D'Aquila's own underboss, Al Mineo (D'Aquila had treated him unfairly), shot him to death, out of his dentist's office. The former Capo di tutti Capi (in name only), was finally in the ground. Next in the Boss's "Blacklist", was the j#w kingpin, Arnold Rothstein. That was both, business & personal. Rothstein had to go, because he was a sneaky, ruthless cockroach (like all those "Christ-killers"). The whole "angry gambler" thing, was just the cover. After all this "cleaning of the house", Joe was the ultimate Boss of the US Underworld. He had took over the organisations/territories of all the obstacles he got rid of (he appointed his puppet-bosses, to run them on his behalf, like subsidiaries companies). The only real force in the Underworld, which hadn't submitted yet, was the Castellammarese Clan. But, this is well known. The fact that isn't so well known, is that the one who orchestrating the death of Chicago Godfather and President of the Unione Siciliana, Antonio Lombardo, was no other, than Joe "the Boss" Masseria (in the "Golden Year", again). Lombardo had to go for two reasons: a) The Boss, wanted to take over the Unione Siciliana (political brunch of Cosa Nostra-with strong presence in Chicago), b) Lombardo had Capone as his backing, and the Boss, wanted Capone with no "connection", so he would put him under his Protection. Later, in 1930, when Castellammarese Godfather of Detroit & important figure within the Unione Siciliana had insulted the Boss, by his dishonoring refusal of supporting him to be the new Head of the Organisation, he ordered Milazzo's death. The contract took Milazzo's rivals in Detroit, who ambushed him, while he was waiting for a "sit-down" (like the Velenti thing). That was Joe the Boss. A survivor, a fighter, a soldier, a Leader, a General, an Emperor. A real Godfather, a real Boss. Like New York Police had reported: "He was bigger of them all. Bigger than Al Capone". "He was Leader of every kind of racket. Not even a slice of spaghetti got sold, without him took tribute"!!!
