So, the question is, what do you think has changed since the heady days of 2012? Also, the interaction of vehicle weathering techniques and infantry armour is an interesting side step you could take, with the sculptors notes Simon Egan and Edgar Skoromowski used to make before the Forge World Visual was pulled.

Hey, Macca! The Forgeworld visual channel is still up, actually. I was tempted to use the Egan interview about Angron, but I was concerned about copyright. Skoromowski was great too. What I really want to know is exactly when and why these artists were fired...and if that was the case, as I suspect.
@josephwestley18624 жыл бұрын
Actually most or if any where not fired. Rather they left to either join the citadel studio or left to do another things. Phil left not to long ago. It is sad forge world dont have this style no more and its sad that Phil no longer works at FW. :(

Sorry for the late reply. I am happy to hear they were not fired, that is something at least. But yes, I wish Phil still worked at FW.

I went to most of the classes that Mark and Phil ran - they were great days where I learned a lot and they often showed how you could recreate some of the effects from basic GW paints and materials.

I wish I could have done that! May I ask if you have watched my other 2 FW-related videos?

@TheRaceForTerra I haven't yet, I only recently discovered your channel and am working my way through the back catalogue, but owning both of the Imperial Armour masterclass books and the later Horus Heresy one the video caught my interest

*CORRECTION* : at 10'20" I state the the Typhon tank on screen was both sculpted and painted by Phil Stutciskas. I have since been told that the painting was done by *Matt Murphy-Kane* , another very talented artist who was part of Forgeworld's team at the time.

Very interesting - those books are excellent resources btw, one of the first purchases I mde from FW. I never thought about the look of FW being so different, because I came from more of a Scale Model background, it didn't occur to me they were that different. Weathering is my highlighting. It's the most amazing process and the most fun indeed! There's sooo much to try and learn, and you can't easily screw it up (unlike say edge highlighting) because it is a natural process you're mimicking so random is *perfect*

Great video, mate! I used to paint in a pretty standard 'GW style', but since first tried weathering back in 2015 I've used it on pretty much every model I paint. It's a lot of fun and adds so much to the character and aesthetic of a model :)

Thank you very much! I used to play Iron Hands, and my first attempts at weathering were with the Iron Tenth. Never quite learnt how to best weather the black panels.

Excellent food for thought. This is incredibly interesting to me, seeing as I am in the middle of changing up my painting and modelling processes to display more grit and grime. I'm also changing legion(s) to more appropriately support their system they happen to come in, be it HH, 40K or Board Game (World Eater for my Chaos/ Renegades changed to Iron Warriors, while Black Templar remain for 40K). A fair bit of research went into your work, consider me subbed.

Personally, I understand the appeal of the 'Eavy Metal style, but it's not for me. I've been trying to make my 40k armies much more worn or even "grimdark". The older FW paint style looks amazing.

Same here! It's a matter of taste, but the Imperial Armour Masterclass style Stutcinskas and Bedford created is what I am striving for.

I mean it feels like you prove that the Forgeworld painting style has nothing to do with the Heresy in the video though? Forgeworld's style has always been that way inclined because they used to recruit treadheads and most treadheads have at least a toe stuck into military modelling in the broader sense. Literally any game system FW would have released in that Era would have used that painting style. (And i think its a big part of why their more recent stuff has been a pale imitiation)
@TheRaceForTerra4 жыл бұрын
Treadheads indeed! I am definitely one! 😀
@michaelcaricoo4 жыл бұрын
"I mean it feels like you prove that the Forgeworld painting style has nothing to do with the Heresy in the video though? " I feel like he was trying to point out how interconnected they are. When Bligh and the original Heresy team started out they determined (as mentioned in the video) that they wanted to treat it more like a historical game over the fantasy side as 40k does, and that's why specifically they brought in painters/sculpters like Skoromowski to put that into practice. He's not saying that it wasn't a FW practice in general, just pointing out the fact that the Heresy originally started with that vision in mind and how it's drifted.
@TheRaceForTerra4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, much better explained than I could have. You hit the nail on the head, Michael Carico. 👍

@@michaelcaricoo I had a long chat about the colour concept of the early Heresy days with M. Kane. And you are absolutely right. He and Phil, really tried to give a sense of realism and history with the muted and "realistic" tones. The big change came with the fame of the Heresy game and the release of the plastic sets, where GW tried to pull in bigger crowds of customers.

Well, some things objectively did go “the way of the dodo”, others didn’t - how to look at the whole is for each fan to decide. Personally, as you can gather from this old video, I am nostalgic about many of the elements which have disappeared since.
