Perhaps we should consider the JKU and JLU as the spiritual successor to the XJ. After all, a 4 door Wrangler wasn't available when they built the XJ and if you wanted a 4 door off-road jeep the XJ was the only option.

My first experience with Jeep as a whole was the liberty, my mom had one when I was growing up, it was a great car, you hit it right on the head when you said it isn’t made to be a Cherokee of the old days. It’s meant for moms to haul her kids to schools and it’s amazing for that. In another video (I think it was the Jeep wave video) you explained that People buy jeeps because they’re the most capable vehicles in their class, and they are. That thing was a beast in the snow and my mom loved it. Then she screwed up and bought a Pacifica...( she actually loved it) fast forward to me getting my first car and I bought a beater of a PT cruiser. I loved that car but it was a piece of junk. Then I bought my XJ Cherokee I have now and I love it, i put a 3 inch rustys advanced lift on it and the thing is absolutely awesome. A few months after I got that, my aunt bought a used KL Cherokee, and that is probably one of the nicest jeeps on the interior I have ever been in. It’s also awesome in the Wisconsin winters and it’s absolutely perfect for her. Everyone hates on the new cherokees but they do their job awesomely, they are reliable and capable. You can’t go wrong with buying a Cherokee regardless on which one you get.

I'm in love with the early 90"s XJ's! My uncle is the guy who got me into them granted i'eve always been a fan, but he collects SJ's! He has a 78'' Cherokee chief he has all done up for off roading and light rock crawling, rocking them Dana 44s by God! He's got another 77" Cherokee Chief Wagoneer he has fully restored. And he not too long go aquired a 70" Cherokee Chief that he's currently working on, cant wait to see what he does!

when I was growing up my mom had an 87 XJ pioneer, that thing was a beast specially in heavy snow, then she replace it with a 99 XJ sport which she still drives to this day with almost 300k miles in it. then the first car I bought was a 00 XJ Classic, I put a 3'' inch lift and 31'' tires and many more mods that made it my own, sadly two moths ago I made the decision to get rid of it because had no space for it where I live and was paying a storage park to just drive it during the weekends, I end it up donating it to the Breast Cancer Foundation. I had my Wrangler for 5yrs now but for some reason I cannot love it as much as I did the XJ. I miss my XJ and watching these videos don't think it help much lol, but love the content.

I bought my first Jeep in 2016 after getting stuck in a snow bank with a two wheel drive pickup truck. I had snow piled up in the bed for weight, and thought I'd never get stuck, but there I was and had to get pulled out by a guy with four wheel drive. I bought a KK Liberty and love it. I drive right through the snow banks now with no lift and with street tires. I have pulled my friend out of the snow--twice. I like my KK so much that I bought an XJ, and I'm finishing a lift. I still have to set the pinion angle, and I'll have something to take off road and not worry about scratching the paint. The XJ, properly modified, will climb the same tree as a Wrangler. So I believe that is why Chrysler, with direction from the evil Wolfgang, eliminated the two solid axles. They want us to buy Wranglers if we intend to go offroad.

I've had 2005 kj renegade. It was actually pretty fun to drive. Quite capable. Only reason I got rid of it was for towing purposes. It was rated for 5k. But even with our 3k# ski boat it felt unsafe driving on the highway. Other than that it was a nice ride. I liked the raised flatter hood better than short humped hood. Looked more jeepish. Great video on the Cherokee name too

What made the XJ great was the solid drivetrain without all the bells and whistles. 4.0, AX-15/AW4, 231, D30/8.25. We've all seen the budget builds. Throw in some 33-35" tires, a lift, a couple lunchbox lockers, and maybe some chromos for insurance and you will make JKU's look bad all day, and for cheap. I think if they were to build a full body vehicle with XJ/SJ styling, 3.6 base/V8 option, solid axles so it can be lifted easily, a decent tranny(with a manual option), and a proper 4wd t-case, people would buy it. Add bigger axles and electric lockers to the higher trim levels. All the EPA regulations probably prevent it though :( I agree with you about the nostalgia factor in marketing, and they should use those styling cues more. They need to be able to back it up with the capability of their predecessors though. I feel like Jeep gave up on the full body guys and is only focusing on the Wrangler models as far as offroad enthusiasts go (like you mentioned after the WJ).

Doug, awesome work on this 2 part history! Really appreciate the effort put in. I agree with a lot of what you say most times, but I draw the line at the wussification of the Jeep brand. I get it that the newer cute-utes sell more broadly in the market, but if Jeep weren't making so many different models (Compass, Renegade, Patriot, KL "Cherokee", Liberty, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler), they wouldn't NEED to make as many sales to cover the lower costs of making fewer models. The problem is they are focused making the Jeep brand perform, sales wise, like any other brand. Instead of seeing the Jeep brand as a nice little bonus to the company's portfolio, they want it to perform like the big-boys. This attitude is what's KILLING the Jeep brand. Jeep was never meant to be a brand for the masses. It was a brand that catered to the truly adventurous and those who NEEDED a capable off roader. Now the only truly capable off roader they make is the Wrangler. The WK II Grand Cherokee is close, but it NEEDS locking diffs to get where the WJ would go without them, and I'm not sure it can handle as much off road abuse either. So, unless people want a Wrangler (I don't, they don't look good, interior not anywhere near as nice as even a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee, and the aerodynamics are terrible and make for loads of wind noise, and to top it off, now they are actually every bit as expensive as a Grand Cherokee!) they are now going to buy something like a Toyota 4-Runner. So, I ask you sir: 'Tis better the Jeep brand live on, a ghost of its former self, or to have died a legend, if it even came to that? Even if the Jeep brand had died, the aftermarket will continue to make parts for decades. The manufacturers and dealers are only obligated for 10 years post production. Jeep needs to go back to their roots. Wrangler, Cheokee (the REAL one), and Grand Cherokee (Again, a REAL one). You totally CAN make these types of vehicles in today's world, complying with safety and fuel economy standards. Modern power train technology makes it quite possible. Forget "Make America Great Again", and make Jeep great again! Then the awesome Jeeps will make America great all by themselves! LoL

You do realize that "fake" cherokee got its Trailhawk badge running the Rubicon trail unassisted. And that a solid amount of Xjs where sold in just RWD, so jeep has always made bread and butter of the majority of consumers who are not taking their jeeps off road or hardcore off road, and want the image, or all weather capability and light off roading ability.

I have a 2019 Trailhawk elite, It comes from the factory with a 1.5 inch lift over the standard cherokee, it comes with full skid plates and optional (which I got) rock rails, and it is the only Jeep outside of the Wrangler with an actual locking rear differential right out of the factory. If you go to a dealer they will talk all this up. It it also has a true two speed transfer case. It is actually very capable. I have actually watched comparison videos of a stock Trailhawk KL against a stock (off road package XJ I now forgetting what you said the name of the package was) and it out did the factory XJ where the XJ would have to back up and pick a different line or make a difference go at the obstacle the KL would just pick its way over it. think though that part of the reason the first thing they talk out is exclusive colors (which are two Firecracker Red and Hydroblue the latter of which I got) is that everyone know what Jeep stands for and what they Trailhawk badge stands for, (the most off road worthy trim line) and across the jeep line up many people will buy the harder core off road packages even in the Wrangler that are not actually going to take it off road, and are thus more concerned about how it looks out of the box. I mean to be honest I get people that are looking for a capable off roader that is a nice daily driver that ask me about my cherokee (and I can say that honestly many of the Wrangler owners in my jeep clubs have been impressed with the out of the box specs for the Trailhawk and just how well it keeps up with their wranglers) but I also get plenty of people that just like the way that it looks, they want a Jeep and want the Trailhawk because of how it looks because like about 90% of SUV owners the most "off roading" they plan to do is a snowy parking lot or a gravel driveway. I think that if many of the hatters of the KL would watch the many KZbin videos of them actually being put through their paces they would change their toon that it is not a "real" Jeep I mean ill loop back to other then the Wrangler the Cherokee is the only Jeep to get an acaull locking diff in it. Jeep put a lot of time and effort into making it offroad worthy, of course nothing out of the factory is going to be as good as an XJ that someone has spent thousands of dollars and many hours of labor modify from its original form into a hardcoor offroader. But from factory I would say that it dose deserve the Cherokee name. and if you look at tow rating the 3.2 V6 with tow package is only 500lbs off of the rating for the 4.0 XJ So even when it comes to towing it is with in spitting distance of the XJ, and today is the best tow rating in it's class of small SUV. Just my two cents. I am not one that thinks the KL is going to be customizable as the old XJ but then again no modern vehicle is as customizable in the since as anything made 20-30 years ago, just because of how much more complicated the engineering is and how everything these days is controlled by computers so you can't go and change things up without then needing to try to reprogram how all the computers in the vehicle perform. This is true of almost any new car though. But I think that also to many people these days don't understand how loosely sharing a platform means. These days it means just sharing some very basic dimensions with another vehicle. mater of fact the cherokee platform is technically the same platform that underpins from the Renegade to the chrysler pacifica. (so renegade, 500x, compus, dart, Alfa Stelvio, alfa Gulite< chrysler 200, and Chrysler Pacifica IE FCA's CUSW Compact US Wide) they all share the and I think every one would

I'd love to have a Golden Eagle SJ or Cherokee Chief. There were a few of both running around town when I was a kid. The diesel bit, most people in the US only have experience with them in trucks. It's like everyone thinks nothing but heavy duty when they think diesel. In Europe, and the rest of the world for all that matters, diesels are more prevalent because they get better fuel mileage so they put little diesels in everything. We aren't as concerned with how much gas we burn as compared to them. I wouldn't mind having a diesel in our WJ, I kinda like them. Getting 17-18 mpg in my 1T Chevy with 4:56 gears. Top speed of 55 mph sucks but I deal with it. The 04' Overland with a diesel would be sweet!

I was just given a 95 xj. The engine transmission the transfer case front and rear diff are an awesome condition runs great . The major issue with this it has so much rust that both of the unibody frame rails under both of the front seats are literally rotted in half. There were leaf spring brackets that are under the back seat are no longer attached to the body. I've had several people tell me to scrap it pull the drivetrain. After watching a lot of your videos on your junkyard walks I realized I cannot put him in the junkyard. So I'm going to rebuild the unibody and I'm going to start a channel second channel on my process of restoring this beloved XJ that everybody will leave for dead. His name is hayzer and he will live again. It's drivable just at the rear wheels are up in the fender well. Thank you for all your videos that you do especially your junkyard walks it's got me excited and I have a few yards in my town that I could go and visit. So I think I'm going to start doing some of my videos of my junkyard walks myself inspired by you. I have no welding experience no body experience I am a shade tree mechanic working on my own stuff but when it comes to body work in welding I have never done it. I will be using a Chicago electric 90 amp welder because it's free and I have access to it. I am hopefully going to bring this XJ back to life and give it a proper existence like it deserves

KK Liberty at least got a low range :) I think the ONLY rear axle available in the KJ Liberties was the 8.25. But I could be and probably am wrong wouldn't be the first or last time. I think a loaded limited model Liberty would be great to build a small family "overlanding" type rig out of, especially with the CRD. Plenty capable for that kind of duty and comfortable. You can find in good shape Limiteds around here for about the same price as a decent XJ. XJ prices are getting a little crazy. FCA really botched the job on the newer Grand Cherokee diesels. Those things seem to explode totally at random. I had a buddy with the CRD Liberty and he loved it. Got great fuel mileage out of it and it was actually quite peppy. I dont' remeber hearinga lot of horror stories about them.

The usual response to the "we must have independent front suspension" is: OK, now let's add a big honking sway bar so that it isn't hardly independent at all. What's the point?

@@DEInTheGarage I'm not certain about Jeeps, but our '99 Ford Explorer had a 1 1/8 inch diameter sway bar. Imagine the torque to twist that thing.

When the KJ first came out I didn't like the way they looked and I assumed they were inferior. Last Summer my daughter bought a used 2004 Rocky Mountain edition and since working on it and driving it I now respect it. Dare I say when the supply of used XJs and WJs starts to run low, Jeepers that want something other than a Wrangler are going to have bidding wars on rust free old KJs that they will mod out. One day good Jeeps built before 2007 will be like classic muscle cars and only trade for stupidly high dollars.

Jeep, like every other car company tries to cater to what the mass(not just diehard Jeep fans) consumer market says it wants. What are those things you ask ?.........heated seats, big screen navigation/radio/information screens, rear entertainment, "exclusive colors schemes", blah, blah, blah. if they began marketing mechanical options the vast majority of buyers eyes would glaze over and ask......."but does it have an infotainment system ?"

this does way deeper than this. your video was AWESOME... i really learned a ton. i'm not against jeep. only partially. but mostly the people who buy them. what you buy reflects who you are and what you do to it .... i have issues with the jeep culture split between hilljack teens who tear these things up.... and pansies who can't wrench. mostly why i am a lone jeeper. done with the culture of fucking idiots and yuppies.

People don't buy the diesel versions in the US because of the ridiculous price and they're not reliable and fuel economy isn't that great in them due all the emissions crap they have on them. I have seen a couple of them, and a couple of Grand Cherokee diesels, all of which were in pick a part yards if that tells you anything about why people don't buy them...and they weren't in there due to being wrecked.

Diesel was a VM Motori, made of spaghetti, more or less. Earlier versions ( fitted to XJ's and other vehicles including Range Rover ) were a P.O.S - inherant fatal design flaws abound. Later versions as fitted to Liberty were better, but not much

I made the mistake of buying a 2012 JK, and wish I never did. The electronics are the worst. It is isn't funny. This will be the last new Jeep I ever buy. Just bought a 1999 XJ from South Carolina. Much better vehicle, plus a lot cheaper.

I was told that the JK Wrangler replaced the XJ. The XJ was the beginning of the transition from unibody rear wheel/4wd traditional Jeep to the modern KL with front/AWD unibody. To me in reality the Grand Cherokee is the modern version of what the XJ could have evolved into.

Once had KJ 'Cherokee' 2005 2.8 CRD Rennie(one with flat hood) it was perfect looking Super cute 4x4. And weirdly, on KJ's Case... CRDI won in long term reliability vs N/A Petrol.... 3.7 V6 was that bad. reliable V8 4.7 had same name! powertech! but it was only the name 😢 For KL and 'new renegade'... Why Non-Trailhawk models cannot perform almost any of off-roading??? dang jeep. you fuqed up. you really fuqed up.... Jeeps meant to be can go-Off road vehicles. and Jeep's Offroad trim Means 'More Offroad Worty model', Factory Mod series.... I cannot see those "Non-Offroad model's cannot go anywhere...." stuff... just plain why. chainging approach angle is not that difficult as far as i know.... i feel sad when i see 'Street Model' of RL or KL'

The Liberty and KL are both dog shit. Jeep needs to stop using the Pentastar V6 it’s a shitty minivan engine. The last good jeeps were the XJ and TJ bottom line. only good thing that stems from the modern shitty Jeeps is it makes old ones more valuable😂👌🏻
