You neglected to mention that 10 cars were delivered with air conditioning when new. I did a survey for the Committee for Better Transit in 1976 and one of the things I found was that many R38s had water leakage in heavy rain at the seams behind the bonnet. The water would run down the wall next to the front storm door and onto the seat.

Wow, that’s super cool! The R38s were certainly not the best-made subway cars 😅

@@TRRailfan The R40 and R42 cars were even worse. Budd built a much better car body than St. Louis did. Ironically both are no longer in business.

The 10 A/C cars had a scent inside that was pleasant, unique and interesting. A sweet chemical smell that likely was toxic. For two plus years this ten car set was king of the railroad, being the only air-conditioned train. Mayor Lindsey announced in 1968 that all new buses and trains would be purchased with air conditioning (which was much colder than what is standard for today).

@@1575murray Funny that these look more like the Budd M-3 Market-Frankford cars and not the R-32s (and yet the R-32s are Budd and the R-38s aren’t).

Thanks for putting this together. I always liked the R38s and remember them as a kid on the F and even on the N. I think they were the first cars to have air conditoning work successfully around the mid 1960s.

They were the first NYC subway cars to successfully implement air conditioning. The last 10 cars in the order 4140-4149 had Stone Safety air conditioning units as delivered. However some H&M/PATH cars had already entered service in 1958 which had air conditioning installed at the St. Louis Car factory. I rode on them a few times as the PATH used them on the Hoboken-WTC route and they sounded just like IRT subway cars. PATH also later ordered a fleet of cars from St. Louis Car which came equipped with air conditioning before the R38 cars were built.

196 R38 cars that received great overhaul programs after a $400,000 overhaul as they became graffiti free that should have not been replaced by these new high tech trains car group fleet and most cars reefed and what a waste of money and only one pair of 2 cars persevered for the NYTM should have saved more at least about 50 cars even a couple sets for passenger service too!
