This made me realize how cool overwatches announcer system is. The only things the actual announcer says is are you attacking or defending, how much time is left and multi kills. All objective related lines are said by the heroes in your team and when youre playing well its your hero whos the one to say it with the on fire lines.
@JonnyZerep Жыл бұрын
I love how much the characters now talk, useful stuff too. My Ana (support) was reloading to continue healing and she said she was reloading which let my team to take cover or not take as much damage for a bit. Same goes for when there's a sniper after the first shot goes whizzing by. I love how much info Overwatch gives its players 😀

its really sad how shit overwatch announcer is, I have played the games for many years and cant even remember a voice lane of her lol tf2 on the other hand is a different story xD
@Jcriptobeta Жыл бұрын
It's the exact same in TF2 aswell, Payload as an example, has approaching checkpoint lines(both defending and attack variety), Time Left, but the classes dictating your team specific reactions, "the cart is supposed to move FORWARD" when stopped on attacking, as well as defender lines i'm pretty sure.

The “killing spree” one from Halo in the beginning of the video was one of the first announcer that I heard in games. The first game I ever played (Diddy Kong Racing) had a fantastic announcer as well. He said the name of every track, and of course the iconic “POWER UP!” that I still find satisfying to hear, even to this day.
@justsomeannoyingredpanda Жыл бұрын
I was wondering when you were going to mention "Bastion" from SuperGiantGames. The only voice in the entire game aside from grunts from enemies and vocals from songs was the narrator. He would narrate what was going on always in a past-tense like you were playing out a story. Explain why our player character was here giving us an objective to work towards. And gave lore and told stories so we understand and the world we were playing in and wondered what happened to it. and not to mention how he narrated almost every move we made. First to encourage the idea that we're playing through a story but to also show how much love and attention the developers put into their game. It was one of the most magical playthroughs I've had in a long time.

Overwatch's announcement system is great just for integrating all the characters on both teams into it. I've got particularly fond memories of the Unreal Tournament announcer too, but I think the most underrated announcer is the one from Sunset Overdrive (probably because it's a rather unfairly overlooked game), who is clearly just having a blast spouting lovely nonsense.

4:22 Dude, you could hear that announcer screaming combo enders from miles away even if the sound was turned off somehow. Of course the devs would admit years later that they cranked the volume for it to be way louder for that very reason. You could instantly tell what arcade had Killer Instinct in it just by walking by, same for Nam 1975 with the intro yell.

Certainly not a topic I've thought about much but such a surprise is a welcome one. There are certainly a lot of fun voice clips to think back on with in-game announcers. 2:24 - Always love these history lessons, particularly with the rather unfamiliar arcade scene (countryside village and 90's born; not a lot of arcades around my parts). Dragon's Lair does have a surprising amount of impact on the gaming scene, given how often it appears when covering gaming history. 9:41 - Whilst I'm not much of a sports game player, I do love the running commentary that such in-game announcers provide throughout the gameplay. Another game that had a plentiful amount of announcer commentary throughout the gameplay was Pokémon Stadium; loved that attribute. 15:20 - I wouldn't know who I would claim to be the best but I do easily remember the Soulcalibur and Smash Bros series announcers. One I'm particularly fond of though is Pokkén Tournament's Nia, as she serves as a character within the game as well. On that note, I do appreciate when a lot of licensed anime games use characters that aren't playable as the announcers, allowing them to have a role in the game still.

The intro of SSBM still gives me goosebumps to this day, but since it didn't appear here, I wanna give a special shoutout to the narrator of Darkest Dungeon. Each and every line he says is not only memorable and insanely quotable, but also makes the already dark atmosphere of the game feel even denser and deadlier. He's also a key component of the final twist of the game's story.
@Wintercat1 Жыл бұрын
This video mostly leaves me wanting a deeper dive into the topic. It was great to hear Akshon gush a bit about Jeff Steitzer and Dean Harrington (Dean's voice is one of the most iconic from my childhood too), but I want to hear some more names of the many announcer and narrator VAs mentioned along the way, together with some info about what else they've done when available. A little more detail about some of the various announcers with in-world characters would be cool too, such as the Administrator from TF2, the old man from Bastion, and even some titles not mentioned like the Ancestor from Darkest Dungeon. These are some of the most iconic voices of our childhoods and current era of gaming, it would be neat to see them get some proper recognition and history.

Battleblock Theater has, for me, one of the most iconic announcers ever, not only he's the only human voice the player hears but he also has a lot of lines for a lot of actions and things the player does. Also i gotta mention RimWorld where the difficulty of game is based on the narrator, a really cool mechanic and interesting to say the least. And last but not least, a recent game "The Last Hero of Nostalgaia" (TLHON), i know this game is more linear and a narrator and an announcer are different things, but TLHON goes full on Portal 1 and 2 where the narrator starts as your enemy and he despises you but as you progress the story he becomes your friend.

I was lucky enough to play an arcade game from 99 called The Grid over the weekend. Absolutely incredible experience and the announcer is a character in the game, but you can also register yourself as a player and give the announcer a name to call you.
