Here we look at the old Worsbrough railways that carried coal from the Yorkshire collieries to the Lancashire power stations. Dave and his grandson Ryan talk about the "Beast Of Worsbrough" the Bayer Garratt that ran up the 1 in 40 gradient Worsbrough bank.
Using fascinating archive and drone footage we see the Worsbrough railways come back to life.

Well done Dave brings back memories of my early footplate career at Wath and Barnsley in the mid 1960's. I used to live over the hill in Hoyland. By the way I knew a secondman at Barnsley by the name of Phil Cherry!

Growing up in the late 80s I always wondered for years what these old railway lines looked like when they were active. The woodhead and stairfoot lines had just closed and I used to go nesting darn them parts trying to imagine them with trains running. Fascinating stuff. The oaks viaduct always intrigued me because as a nipper all I could see was the foundation footings for the oaks viaduct and trying to imagine what it looked like had me bamboozled as a young kid. How delightful to finally see it in this video. Brilliant stuff Dave and thanks for sharing it with us

I cycled most of this path (Worsborough Branch) for the very first time the other day, so watching this was very informative. Is it possible to watch the whole film of the old footage anywhere? Thanks James.

Oh thanks for your kind comments Ty. It's nice to be appreciated. I wanted my grandson Ryan from New Zealand to make this film with his new camera. My very good mate Wayne Sleight is a descendant of the Durnans. He helps me with all the films. Cheers Dave

The Beyer Garratt never ran in the livery shown in your film. It is depicted in what is known as 'workshop grey'. When built locos were photographed in workshop grey prior to the working livery being applied. Thanks for the film.

There is some interesting obscure footage on here - the two class 31s passing Monkspring Junction (with track still in situ!) and the Black Five/9F combination, are these two bits from a commercial vhs video ( and if so which please?). Much of the former electric line route through Worsbrough is just a masss of trees (as is the former MML at Cudworth!). Thanks for putting this on.
