Brilliant video, im surprised by how much the area has become overgrown. I can remember, as a child, leaving Cudworth on t Pull and Push, an autotrain (lòco stays at one end and driver uses bell signals to fireman from a remote cab in other direction, fireman has to work the regulator but driver has a brake lever) coaches were normally compartments, maroon, with mirrors and images of holiday destinations above the seats, the train terminated in Barnsley Courthouse station. A lovely station, I remember passing over the Oaks viaduct. It was built because the Midland railway bypassed Sheffieild, Barnsley and Wakefield on its way to Normanton, anyway, Monkbretton station was still there but closed but intact. Later I went down the pit at Barnsley main ( there was a ghost there they say) and even worked a bit at Monkbretton colliery then closed but still by the railway and used as a workshop. Sorry i could go on and on.

So much compelling history, and unusual architecture in the locality...and it all changed so quickly. I lived at the lower end of what I presume was the Dearne/Dove Canal, near to the Yorkshire Traction Bus Depot, where there were some locks, a large stone house for the lock-keeper (my Great Uncle Percy, then the Elsecar Canal, really popular back in the day for anglers. This was the Wombwell/Brampton border, also, the Barnsley/Rotherham border too. There were some old stables and small buildings in a small cluster of trees, full of buried leather horse harnesses, and beautiful bottles. I also found a really old coin there in the 60'w when I had a great collection of them, free gratis of my grandma but a crook in the family nabbed them all. Aah well, nothing lasts forever it seems. Good old days, although it must have been tough in some of the mining villages and pits.

“We’re here today to see what’s left of the Oaks viaduct”. As Paul Daniels used to say “not a lot”.

Bennerley viaduct on steroids , would have loved to have seen it but it was demolished just before i was born , my next door neighbour saw someone walk out on to it and jump off when he was working at barnsley main .

Lessons were learned with this. It cost more to demolish than it was worth in scrap. That's why Bennerley Viaduct is still standing.

Maybe (hopefully) some kind of a bouncer from the local working men's club?
