Today I finally obtain my Steyr 1909/1934 with original holster! When I saw this firearm I knew I had to jump on the opportunity to purchase it. Thanks for the video; you're information on this pistol is very helpful.

This pistol came to me from my wife's father who is now almost 90 years old. It was given to him by his father around 1948-1949. He was the chief of police of Grand Prairie, Texas, now a large suburban area of Dallas. He was responding to an armed bank robbery around 1942-1943 and one of the robbers began shooting at him with this pistol. He shot the guy in the leg and and always said this was the only time he ever had to shoot(at) anyone in his 40 year career as a policeman. He kept the gun as a souvenir but didn't know much about it, nor did his son, my father-in-law.He was a very large and strong man who was able to handle himself generally without needing a weapon. The marks on the left side of the barrel:PAT.No9379-G5u.No25025-06. TheG could be a C. There is also the number 21. at the base of the barrel and a symbol I can't read (maybe a symbol for Oesterreich or Austria?). There is the number 45861 above the trigger guard. The mark on the right side of the barrel: PAT.( Swiss cross)No40335. There is also a symbol at the base of the barrel looking something like Nv stylized. The pistol is definitely the 1932 or 1934 improved Steyr-Pieper model of the original 1909 design. I have assumed that it was a "war trophy" from WW2 either brought here by the bank robber or someone from whom he obtained it. I don't know if it was declared when brought to the U.S. but I don't think so. Anyway, it's a good story and I swear I didn't make it up! Guy

Ooooh, HS camera perhaps? In a month or so I'd be happy to run another promo for your channel and try to steer some more viewers your way. Does the magazine need to be in the pistol for it to shoot? I don't really understand the two position mag deal if you are loading a round at a time in it.
@Candrsenal9 жыл бұрын
+TAOFLEDERMAUS That's my thought as well. Why not just... not load the magazine..? Thanks man, might want to wait until we get through some of these planned rifles and MGs
@taofledermaus9 жыл бұрын
They definitely over-thunk that one. Whenever you are up to it, I'll be more than pleased to promote the crap out of your channel again.
@nexviper9 жыл бұрын
My initial thought too, and leaving the magazine in must run the slight risk of accidentally pushing it in and making it semi again. Not a problem if you are being sensible and safe but after a long time of expecting single shot, or with someone new to the gun, the shooter could mess up.
@christianelund58419 жыл бұрын
+TAOFLEDERMAUS the idea with the two position magazine is the same as the magazine cutoff on the rifles at the time. With the pistol in single shot mode you can keep a constant rate of fire for as long as you have cartridges handy, whereas if you use the magazine you'd get 7-8 quick shots. but then you'd have a long delay while you remove the magazine, refill it one cartridge at a time (which takes even longer than dropping it into the chamber), and reinsert it in the gun. (the idea of carrying multiple preloaded magazines is quite recent. a pistol would usually just come with one or two magazines, which you'd fill up with loose cartridges when needed) So with the magazine in the cut-off position you'd actually have a higher rate of fire over a long period. Then if you suddenly need to fire rapidly you could slap the magazine in, and use the gun in true semi automatic mode.

I must confess something, Othias...... As soon as you introduced the pistol and demonstrated the tipping barrel, I made a very surprised and extremely girly "OOOOOOOOOOH!!!" Sound! Hahahaha Just like to say that I LOVE the channel! It's nice to see someone who has a great eye for detail and history! I find every episode absolutely fascinating. It's also nice to hear May's (hope I got the correct spelling!) opinions and that all of these weapons are also properly demonstrated in shooting as well as just exposition. Both are equally interesting to me. I also have to confess an extreme amount of jealousy as I am in the UK and I could never hope to own a working example of many of the weapons you feature, particularly the pistols. Anyway, thank you for all the work you guys do and I wish you all the best going forward. I am very much looking forward to seeing May's opinion on the infamous Chauchat!!!! I'm sure that will be a highly anticipated episode!

Nerded out about this in the Minute of Mae exerpt of this episode, but it's interesting enough I'll post it here as well. The smaller, Belgian version of this was used in the animated pilot of Lackadaisy. This can be confirmed by the referenced 6 round capacity, several shots of the silhouette, and the fact that every gun featured in the episode was based off a real firearm from the era (M1911, BAR, Schofield, and Thompson, in addition to the mentioned Pieper.)
@BS-in4kb9 жыл бұрын
hi, firstly: watched this vid on xmas eve and sweetened the evening right before dinner. secondly: mae was quite ... i do not know whether it is xmas eve or so, but ... just made even more fun to see/her talk about the shooting experience. thirdly: it always makes me nervous seeing someone weaving around with guns even i truly know they're safe. fourthly: in my opinion, the complicated names were not really butchered, but Pieper... more like "peep" instead of "pipe" for the first sillable.
@BS-in4kb9 жыл бұрын
do not get me wrong, point three should not be a harsh complain, as it may sound, just unusual for me :)

+Be St Thanks for the compliments! We're obviously moving the piece around a lot and I get that. But we do keep them pointed in safe directions despite being unloaded. The cameras are often unmanned but even so you'll rarely see the muzzle. Instead you'll notice we mostly maintain a "lock" on a plane just in front of where we're sitting.
@DerNutzer89 жыл бұрын
+C&Rsenal (same Acc [Be St], different device) I never doubt that, believe me. I was just trained/teached - well - not do move a gun much and in spite of having just many pieces of metal which do not do anything unless you want it to (like the P38 from the Bundeswehr: 8 warning shots and and aimed throw). And yeah, I admit, that I may have sounded rude or so, did not mean it that way. I see a streched finger as well, so nothing dangerous there. Just an uncomfortable feeling about that. Everything else was good and the vid, yeah, really good. I mean, sometimes i am unused to the switch of perspective when Mae is in the vids and both of you are talking - like an interview - about that particular piece and I view it in a certain angle. Well, just my personal opinion which certainly does not say the vid were bad or so. Really like them.

Very interesting and informative video-I've heard good things about you folks and, picking this video at random, it looks to be true. One thing you might want to try: when you cut from one camera to the other, cheat the audio a little. Like when you cut to Mae disagreeing noting how she didn't care for firing the gun (15:25 or so), switch to Mae for "favorite shooter to date" with that audio over her video so she can immediately respond, "no no no..." It would tighten up the video and make it look more natural.
@Candrsenal9 жыл бұрын
+Jason Olshefsky I can give that a try!

That's the first and so far only pistol I've seen with a magazine cutoff. Interestingly Steyr still uses that two position magazine catch on the Steyr Scout Rifle which may be the last rifle design with a magazine cutoff function,
@jeffreyplum52599 жыл бұрын
The pistol had was effectively, a magazine disconnect. Single loading the barrel, then firing the full magazine, might have been a feature. The -34 version might have been a much nicer piece. It is rather like the modded Ross mk 3 (short) .

Has anybody ever seen that indicator pin in real live ? can´t find a image of it
@RabidMortal19 жыл бұрын
You speculate that the recoil would be more manageable with a heavier spring....that prompts a general philosophical question on all reviews of old gun: how well can we truly judge the shooting characteristic of any century-old gun, especially when it comes to questions of springs and/or part durability? (Another excellent video BTW)
@Candrsenal9 жыл бұрын
+RabidMortal1 True, the spring could have aged poorly but given the near-mint condition I don't think it was terribly reduced in strength. Although, you are right... we can never have them "factory original." Such a shame!
@RabidMortal19 жыл бұрын
+C&Rsenal Oh, I'm sure the spring was probalby in mint condition too. However, it had still been (somewhat) compressed inside the gun a long time. My understanding (which could be wrong) is that while coil springs don't loose their *rate* as they age, they can change in their dimension (ie, they compress)--that why bed springs "wear out". To be clear I'm not finding fault with this or any other video (they're all top notch!), only pointing out that the age of the components involved could affect our present day impression of how a mechanical object was supposed to function when new.
@dark2023-1lovesoni2 жыл бұрын
@@RabidMortal1 actually springs wear out from changing compression more than being held compressed. A closed switchblade doesn't damage it's spring, yet bed springs get messed up rather quick. It's the repeated changing in their state that damages them. Same is true of leaving mags loaded.

@blahorgaslisk77639 жыл бұрын
Adamant Consternation You are right about both of those, but only the Chiappa is currently in production as Mateba shut down in 2005, and I was thinking of automatic pistols. The under barrel design is interesting, and not always seen as a positive thing. In 1956 the International Shooting Union added the following to their rule book: “The axis of a gun barrel shall not be lower than the upper part of the shooter’s wrist.” This was a response to the MC-3 pistol that was used to break a number of world records. It's interesting that from it's introduction in 1951 to 1955 only 14 of these pistols were produced by Tula. Between 1956 and 1960 they sold 111 of these pistols even though they were banned from all international pistol competitions. One last pistol was made in 1965 and that was the last MC-3 produced by Tula.

The edited show has dragged because we had a delay in our dies/supplies for making 8x50mmR Austrian. If the weather holds we'll be filming the last shots tomorrow.

Sure there´d be better choices to take to a battle... but i am still not sure how well reliability can be judged on such an antique 100+year old gun. Even if they have been treated well, it is rather likely that none of these that are still around match original condition. Nice review and late thanks ^^ Did these compeat in any trials? Would they not have figured out if there was a serious problem with the firing pin?
@Candrsenal8 жыл бұрын
+ranji kawanji No trials. Just raw adoption as a secondary. Most guns actually weather quite well.

The .32 needs to be modernized with a tad longer case and higher operating pressures.

Man, the Austrians sure fielded a lot of different handguns. Most of the others would be higher on my list than this little guy.

Picking a nit, but it is actually an important one. German Like most americans your reverse the position of e and i when the combination "ie" is used. It should be a long smiling "i", not a "ey", Pieper you pronounce like Peiper would pronounce and those are dissimilar words. Steyr however you get exactly right.

Fantastic and interesting video, as always. Don't worry about the German pronounciation, it was totally understandable, at least for me. :) I can imagine how "Oesterreichische" is probably a bitch to say for you guys, haha :D. Especially with the umlaut.

I know you don't really care about pronunciation, but this one is super easy - if you see a German word that beginns with either ST or SP, it's pronounced SHT and SHP respectively, therefore it's not "Steyer", but "Shteyer".
