Technically, it is safe to use underloaded 9x19 in the 1915. Glisenti ain't cheap these days, so I'm guessing they did that. I know a guy who's got 3 boxes of it and they're $65 a pop

7.65x17mm Browning - .32 ACP in the United States - was designed close to the turn of the 20th Century by John Browning and quite popular. In European loadings, they would penetrate a helmet. I presume within typical handgun ranges. The power and recoil of the 7.65 also leant itself to use in small blowback pistols. Lastly, this was the pre - antibiotic era and even minor wounds could kill, eventually.

The Italian Army is an odd duck. They had a .380 ACP pistol in WWII when everyone else had a more powerful handgun. They even held onto the M1934 all the way until the 90s when they adopted the Beretta 92FS while the Navy and by extension the Naval Infantry had adopted the M1951 when it was first introduced. Similar with the French Navy getting the good G2 version of the FAMAS while the Army kept the crummy F1 version.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 8 жыл бұрын
The Beretta 92 was adopted by the Italian Army in 1978. As usual, armies use their equipments until exaustion, and it needed time to reequip the entire Army, so there were still some Beretta 1934 in use in the '90s, but they were not common. The Italian Navy adopted a semiauto handgun first than the army too. The Mauser C96 in 1899 (another big gun). However, the Army switched from the 9mm Glisenti (not a 9mm luger, but a pretty powerful cartridge anyway) to the .380 ACP right from the experience of WWI. Back then, the handguns were used only, by the officers, by the infantrymen for guard duties, or for police duties. The Beretta 1934 was designed by request of the State Police, and was later adopted by the army too cause the Army officers ( that were the only ones that carried handguns into battles) preferred to have something lighter than the Beretta 1915 and 1923. For what was the use of the handguns on the field back then it was a rational decision. The Navy instead used handguns only for guard duties, so, having to equip ordinary infantrymen, a bigger caliber was favored. They (along with the State Police and the Carabinieri) adopted the M1951 as soon as it was ready for production.

I know is a stupid question, but What would happened if somebody load the model 1915 Beretta with 9mm Luger (parabellum) caliber? I know it woud damge the gun, but I noticed that the recoil spring is too heavy, would it help to avoid some damege of the 9mm Parabellum in it? (please forgive my bad English).

I'm not even sure the episodes would have been on time without Bruno. Those 2D's took 20 hours a pop on an easy one and required dismantling the actual pieces. We put 70 hours prep into the Lewis Gun in 2D before abandoning it as impossible without a whole team. This is MUCH simpler and we have a volunteer working to see if they can be made available interactive online.

No one wants a piece of lead weighing approximately 70 grains going about 850-1000 feet per second. It penetrates more than deep enough to reach the vital organs and do its job. On another note, the .32 ACP was invented by the master himself: John Moses Browning. That's good enough for me.

There is a reason for the "boxy" feeling of the M1915 handle. In the animation it can be seen that the space directly ahead of the thumb muscle is occupied by the main spring, that, in this gun, activates the hammer directly. In more "comfortable" hammer actuated semiautos, like the 1911 for example, the spring is in the heel, and activates the hammer via a rod. That allows to squeeze the upper part of the handle a bit, but is a piece more. As you said, Marengoni was a simplificator.

Between about 1973 and 1978 somebody imported a butt ton load of Beretta 1917s and other, later model, pistols in calibers .32 and .380ACP. Mixed in with those Berettas was a large number of Astra marked "clones" of the Beretta design. I purchased a Beretta in .380ACP and happily carried it off duty for a year or so before "upgrading" to a Llama 1911 clone chambered in .38 Super. Probably because semiauto handguns were not the big thing they became in the 1980s those Berettas sold for about (in my area at least) $75.00 for an "NRA Good" to a little over $125.00 for a really nice one in about NRA Excellent, as did the Astra clones in similar conditions. Seeing this video brought back the memory of that fine, very accurate, Beretta that I so foolishly traded away. Excellent video as usual. Keep 'em coming!

Jesse Sisolack I did that once, only it was with a Browning Auto-5, as I had rested my right thumb just forward of the charging handle. Took a good-sized chunk out. Where did you get the 9mm Glisenti ammo? Did you hand load it or is there a custom ammo maker out there? I did notice recoil pulse on the 9mm and Mae's response. Does the Astra 400/600, also unlocked blowback, have similar pulse? Locked breech pistols seem to have a longer more even pulse compared with the more extreme shorter pulse as noted here. (Admittedly, I may be too detailed obsessed, but heck, that's the fun of the interest in these old relics.) Great video as always!

Although I love guns I never owned one, and did all the papers and stuff just to keep this one in consideration of its historical value. I don't even have ammo for it, and probably if I try to shoot this old gun (wich is apparently well preserved btw)something unpleasant would happen... But I would love to find the production year: is there a way to do so using the serial number? Any tips?

I dont know of a breakdown but the original 15 and 15/17 were produced just a few years before the 15-19

Good video, like always. When you showed teh Villar-Perosa I was speechless..... I played with that gun in B1!!!!! I really thougth that they got it out of their ass. My god, before watching this video, I was thinking of searching for the weapon to see if it was real. And it is!!! It's a aircraft submachine gun!!! Thanks for that ;)

It was not really an aircraft submachinegun. It was meant from the start to be a SMG for field use. The first 300, or so, samples (of a production of more than 14000 samples) were incidentally given to the Air Force (tht was a branch of the Army at that time).

Ah, 9mm Glisenti, or, real live grown-up firearms designers look at a cartridge with exactly the same dimensions as a much more powerful one and say, "Yes. I don't see anything that could possibly go horribly wrong if we start designing guns built to use that."
@Candrsenal

to be fair, Italians
@neutronalchemist3241

Infact nothing went horribly wrong. When the 9mm Glisenti was designed, the 9mm Luger wasn't the most widely used pistol cartridge in the world, but an oddball cartridge used by only one pistol. As a matter of fact, much more 9mm Glisenti than 9mm Luger cartridges had been manufactured until the end of WWI (due to their use in the Villar Perosa SMG since 1915, The Italians needed much more pistol cartridges than the Germans). The possibility of an Italian officer to find a box of 9mm Luger cartridges and try to fire them in his pistol were practically non existent, and infact there wasn't any report describing similar problems. When designers draw a new weapon, or cartridge, for the army. The problems of private owners of 100 years in the future are not taken into account.

So far, it seems that the tighest pistol groups had been obtained by two 9mm guns (the Luger P.08 and the Beretta 1915) and two .32 ACP guns (the Dreyse 1907 and the F.Langenhan Selbstlader).

Thank you, the audio is fixed! Nice attention to details. Can we consider that the Walther P-38 open-top slide was inspired by the Beretta Modelo 1917, even tough it was not a direct blowback design? By the way, out of curiosity, are the two of you a couple in real life or just good friends enjoying firearms history?

If you look at the film Uomini Contro, based on the book by Emilio Lussu, A year on the plateau , or Hemingways Farewell to Arms. the pistol is mainly used by officers against their own soldiers who refused to advance. The officers were apparently expected to buy the pistols them self's. WW1 mentality, and the education of the common soldier in nuts in comparison to today. They did not know what any of it was about or why they were fighting. But they got fed every day and that was better than they got at home at the time. And if they didn't like it, no choice.

@Treblaine

C&Rsenal Sure makes a big difference to recoil. I have yet to find any combat accounts but they can't have kept ordering so many in the same calibre if it was so radically underpowered. They'd at least have upsized to .380ACP. Then again the situation was so dire people were seriously considering shovels as effective close quarters weapons, it's not like everyone had an assault rifle like current conflicts.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 8 жыл бұрын
At that time .32 ACP was considered almost perfect for self defense. It's interesting to see that the Italians, like the other WWI powers for their specific rounds, adopted the 9mm Glisenti in peacetime (1910 in this case) due to theoric considerations. Then, they adopted the .32 ACP after several years of war, having experienced that, for what was the use of a pistol in a battle, the only perceived difference between 9mm and 7.65mm pistols was that 9mm were heavier to carry.
@Treblaine
@Treblaine 8 жыл бұрын
Neutron Alchemist While obviously bigger is better, a cannon ball should be more effective than any pistol... I just can't conceive how anyone could be hit multiple times by .32 multiple times and not succumb. It has to be enough. Especially as the comparison is with earlier generations of handguns that have much broader bullets but being single-action only (or a very heavy double action) and low capacity it's not going to be a shot-for-shot comparison.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 8 жыл бұрын
Treblaine And do not forget that some of those earlier balls were not even that big. the iconic Colt Navy was initially cal .36, then converted to .38 Short Colt, that's a 9mm with the energy of a .32 ACP. It could happen that someone hit multiple times with a .32 ACP keep on fighitng. It happened with 9mm Luger, 45 ACP, and even with full blown rifle rounds. With little and low energy rounds it's marginally more likely to happen, but in the end, in the economy of a war...

why on Earth did they not modify the original 1915 , to use some of the ergonomics of the 1917. 1915 Model 2. if they did they probably would have sold more.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 8 жыл бұрын
To do modifications to a manufacturing line during a war is costly. After the war, the army had handguns in excess, and would not adopt a new design (they purchased only a small number of the much better Beretta 1923 model), while the 9mm was not considered a self-defense round at that time, but military stuff. .32 ACP pistols (economic, easily concealable) were considered to be perfect for self defense back then.
