Great review! Thanks for the flip-through. I'm thinking of using this next year. I've used story of the world for 3 years and while it has been really good, history quest looks simpler, more user friendly, and more fun! I got a little overwhelmed with all the map work and activity options in SOTW!

Thanks for the flip-through! My oldest will be in 1st grade this year and I do plan to wing-it for social studies, but obviously need some resources. I have been thinking about purchasing the Early Times reader and not the study guide--though I was interested in seeing how the study guide is set up, so thanks for the flip through of a unit so I can see how others lay things out. I keep that in mind when laying out my own plans. (The biggest reason I like to wing-it with SS is because I have a big interest in SS myself and a degree in SS education for older grades, so I like the learning I get from planning it myself haha) We will homeschool year round, so I can't wait to start next month (we're taking a couple weeks off right now). Thanks again!

That's awesome! I think winging it works well for a lot of families! We are still kind of winging it for Social Studies too. I use this curriculum as our history spine, but we still go off on our own rabbit trails too ☺️

Oh lol and I got BYL Darwin and Evolutions unit study. Seems like these would all be more or less considered the same subject area so I don't want to overwhelm myself or my kiddos...How old are your girls? I have a 6 and 11 year old. So many choices!!!

I literally just posted about this today on my insta! Yes, I lump History, Geography and Social Studies all together because they overlap so much. And I have such a hard time with picking things for these subjects because there's SO MANY COOL THINGS! Lol. My girls are currently younger than yours - 7 & nearly 5. If you want to see everything we're using, you can watch tomorrow's video or head over to insta and see the post today ☺️

I’m debating on this for my 5 year old daughter for this year or waiting until next year. The chapters seem long for her. I’m not sure she would listen to me read for that long. Do you have the audiobook too?
@OdetoAbode2 жыл бұрын
We did recently get the audio book and we really like it. I would say though that 5 is a little young for this program, for most kids (my opinion).

We are going to use this next year, and the following one the year after - we like to have a main theme for the year so we are going to use this as our main curriculum. How are you liking the curriculum so far?
@OdetoAbode3 жыл бұрын
We're about 5 units in at the moment. I love it so far, and I think my kids love it even more. They love the reader, and always ask me to read, "just one more chapter!" ... I use it as a spine. I don't really stick to the lesson plan. Some units take us longer than a week because we dig in and do more research. I think it works beautifully. I'll definitely have more updates about it in the future, after I get through more of it 😊 But so far, it's working beautifully for us!
@tuathadesidhe15303 жыл бұрын
Oh cool, yeah I've already started stockpiling books to go along with this - and we are going to be digging a timeline trench along the length of our yard to bury relevant artifacts to uncover as "archaeological digs" as we do the program - so the stuff will have been buried for 12 to 18 months by then.

So, is this a history program that removes Christianity, but leaves all other religions?
@OdetoAbode3 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't remove Christianity. It remains neutral and doesn't sway towards any belief system. It comments on any given religion only in the historical context, without offering a world view that's "true" or "correct". It leaves room for parents to insert their own faith studies
@maisieliberty13193 жыл бұрын
@@OdetoAbode love that.
@tuathadesidhe15303 жыл бұрын
Which is the only way religion should be presented to children... Unless of course you are trying to brainwash, and endoctrinate them.
@maisieliberty13193 жыл бұрын
@@tuathadesidhe1530 I think it's important to learn about world religion and morality. It's a compulsory subject in many countries in Europe. Parents who prioritise tecahing a religion do so not to brainwash children but to pass down something which has given them comfort and hope, which they believe and so hope their children will to so they have that same feeling of comfort from their faith and an aid to character development. There are many secular movements more controversial than most religions, brainwash doesn't sound fair when most people manage to raise well educated children, many educated people are religious or hold to certain morals. The beautiful thing is we don't have to if we don't want to, especially if you homeschool. You have a choice to the extent to which you do. World religion is a big part of history and so to skip it out would be doing an injustice to a child's understanding of history. But it's should be as unbias as possible so there isn't a skewed understanding of history. That's just part of a good education. So we can understand different point of views and respect those with different religions who we meet in life. ☺️
@tuathadesidhe15303 жыл бұрын
@@maisieliberty1319 good character and morals existed prior to the invention of religion - and still exist outside of religion... Abrehamic versions of morality are rather questionable in my experience, and observations. The study of History shows quite clearly the destruction that religion has reaped on every culture, and people it has come across.
