considering that the dueling swords used by the French in this time period would have been specifically made for thrusting it seems strange to me that they would have swung them at each other like that. although considering that this was an artist and a critic there's a reasonable chance neither of them had any clue how to use a sword.

A main thrust sword still capable to cut, in many rapiers manuals there are plenity of cut techniques. Still, the dueling swords from the late 19 century were not intended to kill. They just were suposed to wound, so that is why they bend like that.

@@yamiyomizuki i mean, every sword can cut, is a sharp bar of iron, but this kind of swords are too flexible, so dont make deep wound, non for cuts, neither for trusts. (Still, a trust requires less energy and is harder to patch, so would be more likely to kill)

I got one, Peter Wessel "Thundershield," a Norwegian naval commander that served Danmark-Norway against a Duchman that served the Swedish Empire, the enemy of Danmark-Norway. So Thundershield was gambling and called the duchman a cheat, claiming that the duchman is cheating and doesn't own a Hydra as he claimed he did. The duchman claimed to own the mythological 3 headed dragon and not a mighty ship called the Hydra, he was offended by Thundershield when Thundershield said he didn't own it and so tried to stab him, but failed and Thundershield started to beat him up with the pommel of his sword until the Duchman offered an a fair dual to which Thundershield agreed to and died to. Thundershield did not receive an honour burial despite being a hero of Denmark-Norway as duelling was illegal. Thundershield deserves an episode on for his madness and how he even managed to be successful as a naval commander

@@user-br9co3wg5w Well, in the late19th and early 20th century, a duel to first blood was the norm in France. Since no one wanted to die, and no one wanted to be convicted for murder, it almost never ended in anything more then a minor cut. The duels were usually about minor things, like journalists duelling over the rights to some story. There are several videos of some of these early 20th century duels on youtube.
