My father joined the US Army in 1943, just after his 18th birthday. While he never served overseas, he had all the equipment. My friends and I played soldier quite often and we all used our fathers' stuff as just about every adult male in the neighborhood had been in one branch of the service or another. I had cartridge belts, helmets, ammo pouches, knapsacks, canteen, cups, you name it. It all got very well used and I don't remember now what happened to it. None of it was around by the time I was a teenager. It's so strange now to see things like that being collected and used at reenactments, when my friends and I thought so little about it. That stuff was just so common. We used WW2 knapsacks to carry our books to school. Of course now I wish I had it all.
@History-Secrets2 жыл бұрын
Respect for your father!! Yes, this happened a lot.. All these things were used after the war, perfect toys to play with of course! And these days, it's all so valuable.. You wish you could go back in time, and be more careful and keep it all safe.. But that's what you do as a kid, you just play!

I can understand your perspective of a feeling of liberation while you and the other re-enactors were driving around. As am 18-19 yo in the US Army and stationed in Berlin, Germany, on occasion we would go " on alert." Our Company ( 42nd Combat Engineers) would leave our kaserne in the Lichterfelde section and drive through the city to predetermined defensive positions to simulate the start of hostilities between east and west. I use to feel great pride as we rode through the city and little kids would wave pr the elderly would make the sign of the cross as a blessing for us as we passed by. Seeing the elders do that really struck home because they knew and saw and lived through the reason we were stationed there and it was their small way of showing their appreciation.

I am a new reenactor (German 984GR of 275ID, and sometimes 272VGD), long time historian. I had considered reenacting for a while but always talked myself out of it. History Secrets was a big push to get me into reenacting. My group is preparing for an immersion event November 4-6. It'll be my first true event (before this I have only done two small scale living history events) so I'm watching History Secrets to get me pumped.
