I just found the channel, and this was a great introduction to your presentation...you had a lot of great information. I am also a student of history, and was even studying for my masters degree a few years ago...but never finished. One of the things I study is military technology, so I wanted to mention a small but very critical technological advantage the British had over the French and Spanish at Trafalgar...flintlock firing triggers for most of their guns...also called "gunlocks". These were much safer than the old way of touching a match to a pan of powder to trigger the guns, since they did not involve an open pan of powder...but more importantly, they much more accurate than the old way, since the gunner could stand behind the gun's recoil and watch for the right moment to fire and trigger his cannon with a long lanyard, where the French and Spanish gunners stood to the sides of their guns so they could reach the priming powder with their matches on long sticks. The gunlocks also acted much faster, which reduced the delay between the touching of the match to the powder and the cannon actually firing its main charge. It was not just that the Royal Navy was much better trained, they also had the advantage of having made a critical technological advancement that the French and Spanish did not have.👍 Anyway, that's all I had to add to your excellent comments, just wanted to try and add something I did not hear you or Epic History talk about.😁

57:00 I think the blockades also had a very detrimental effect on naval training and experience for the French. You can't really practice any manuevers and gunnery while your fleets are sitting in some ports for years without ever being able to get out at sea.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Nelsons death at the pinnacle of his career was the crowning touch. He was an often troubled, and flawed human being - and how his reputation might have suffered if he had lived is debatable. The nation did not honour his dying wish - and did not "take care" of his mistress, Lady Hamilton - and his abandoned wife returned to favour! Wellington was the Army's national hero and his reputation certainly suffered his military survival. I have walked HMS Victory (still the flagship of the Royal Navy!), marvelled at its shot riddled mainsail from Trafalgar. The "wooden world" of the Napoleonic Wars are a truly fascinating period of history.
