That's really cool. The closest thing I think English has is " and all of that for peanuts," which has slightly different connotations, if I'm right. The English expression means that you put in a lot of effort but receive little to no reward, particularly if the reward goes to someone else.

of the something around 14 crusades, only those literally recognized as the 1st -3rd (which are not actually the first 3) are really justifiable in some way as defensive wars, while the 6th crusade is good by virtue of being the only one where people sat down and were mature about it. The last crusade although not normally called that, the War of the Protestant League, comparatively is terrible for its reasons but probably the one that had the best results. Also how it starts is hilarious with the Third Defenestration of Prague

There were 2 crusades launched to try and help the Byzantines keep hold of Constantinople, the Crusade of Varna and the Battle of Nicopilis. The main reason another Crusade wasn't launched after the Fall of Constantinople, is because England and France were at war, and then right after that war the English had to deal with the War of the Roses, while the Ottomans grew too powerful, while many Christians felt the Ottomans were unstoppable.
@archbishophavel5050
@archbishophavel5050 5 жыл бұрын
That, and it didn't help that the Crusade for Varna ended terribly for the Eastern European nations that took up the banner. Heck, the only reason the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth came to be was because in 1444 (during the Crusade for Varna) the Polish-Hungarian king died in the fighting without an heir. So with the West distracted (As you stated), central Europe very... decentralized, and Eastern Europe reeling from the defeat of one of the foremost regional powers, Constantinople was wide open for the Ottomans to seize.

I am not sure about what you said about the third crusade. This crusade wasn't simply religious, it was a trap set by Fillips II August to get Richard into problems. Fillips made Richard get kidnapped so he could return and start a centralization policy. At the time France was EXTREMELY split between lords trying to get more power and the king didn't have much power. Fillips wanted rebuild a roman empire (that's why he made people call him August after our good old badass pall Octavianus) but he had one major problem and that was England, his vassal. The lord of England had a ton of power to and would intervene. With Richard kidnapped and so Englands great ruler gone. He was able to drastically expand his personal land. (As an added bonus, the emperor of the holy Roman Empire also died, dealing with his second big threat) In the end Richard did come back and waged ware against his lord with the help of Flanders (who pulled brabant in) and big boy Roman Empire. But lost afer the battle at the battle of Bouvines. And Richard died with his heir being his brother Jan without land (the antagonist of Robin Hood). Sorry for spelling/gramatical mistakes, i am not an native Englisch speaker)

From what I've read, it wasn't a trap at all, even though by the time of the end of the crusade, they were so pissed of at one another that it effectively began to be one. But the French king just seized the occasion, I don't think he created it.

RCH is far more of a reliable channel due to the research he puts into it which can be seen with the sources used in it. It's also not as "alt-right" as you say because it's just the main subject of the channel so of course he's going to talk about it the most. Watch RCH if you are truly curious about the Crusades and watch channels like this if you just want some entertainment. Together with the destruction of the great libraries of Alexandria and Baghdad I consider it one of history's greatest tragedies. Also Samwell, just... get out. Please. "I just want to say, no matter who you are, what your beliefs are, you can't not respect the dedication of men who saw they were a bit less than 200 against twenty thousand men, and still decided to make a stand for what they believed in. There is no way in hell any of those swiss guards thought they would win, thought that they might even survive, but they stood anyway, because that's what they believed in. This is what beliefs are about; through thick and thin, through the heat and flames, you stand by those words you lived by, even if it kills you. When you stand next to your brothers-in-arms, your friends, and see that each and every one of you would have to take out over a hundred men to emerge victorious... purely ridiculous, no way you'll make it, right? Well, we stand, and fight, either way. This, this is what strength is." The Theory

There was another motivation for the Crusades: With the established feudal system, many knights, not peasants but not quite noble, found themselves disenfranchised in their 'in-between' role as neither producers nor consumers and started turning to banditry. So this was considered a good way to let them let off some steam and pick on someone their own size for a change

Well, there was a crusade to curb the Ottoman expansion, the crusade of Varna, where the armies of Poland, Hungary, and other minor powers fought the Ottomans in the Balkans, with originally some success, but ultimate failure after the defeat at the battle of Varna, where the Polish king was killed. That happened in 1444, and after that, there weren't really any powers strong enough to muster enough troops to fight the juggernaut that the Ottomans had become. Specifically, Poland and Hungary were out of the game because of previously mentioned Varna, England and France were in the last phase of the 100-year war, Castile (the dominant power of Spain) was preparing to finish the Reconquista through the conquest of Granada, ad Austria was having HRE problems.
@matt_9112
@matt_9112 3 жыл бұрын
It should probably be mentioned that Fredrik II. was actually summoned to crusade years before, but had business he deemed more important to do. When he finally set off he was already excommunicated by the pope, hence why it wasn't considered an "an official crusade©", but since being excommunicated by the pope was a decent source of trouble for HRE rulers, I'd say the main motivation here was still/again religious at core, since retaking Jerusalem was basically the only thing to be waived at the papacy while yelling: "hey papa, no matter what you say, me still faithfully Catholic" in an attempt to pacify his actual realm.

Hey man, recently found your channel. Great stuff! Just a comment about how there was no attempt to save Constantinople around the end of the Eastern Roman Empire: Pope Eugene IV did call to action the Crusade of Varna, with multiple European Powers answering the call. They just were defeated handily because Janissary + Timariots = unstoppable force. This was probably not to save the Roman Empire / Christian Culture, but more for geopolitical reasons, but to be fair they did try.
