That's how it's commonly understood, but that's not how it's always used. Although I wish it was. I'd be fine with calling "300" inspired by historical events; Thermopylae happened, after all (whether it's a good movie is completely separate argument).

@@jochentram9301 300 is a comic book adaptation from Frank Miller...which never claimed to be a historically accurate recounting anyway. Some of the scenes are directly taken from the comic. But some of the one-liners in the dialoge have alledgedly been said, just not in the same context or by the same people, but Spartans were indeed very quick witted and had snappy, sarcastic responses to things. My favorite is still : "As Philip II of Macedon was conquering Greek city-states left and right, Sparta was left alone. Philip had achieved a crushing victory, and Sparta was relatively weak and without walls. Philip sent a message to the Spartans saying “If I invade Lakonia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.” The Spartans replied with one word, “If.”" And he never did XD

My late neighbour Mr Lyczko, as a 16 year old - was forced to lay tracks for Wehrmacht advancing into Soviet Union. After bombing of his unit, he escaped from the hospital and after several weeks journey, he got to Poland and joined it's partisan army. No longer than few months later Soviets chasing Nazis conscripted him to their army under the threats of being shot by marshal court platoon. War ended. Mr Lyczko returned to Poland and started working at (wait for it) railway, only to get arrested and jailed by new Polish government for belonging to illegal partisan army. During prison years he started to attend special educational course and after release made career as a teacher in... Polish communist army. In 'My Way', the two Asian soldiers are shown wearing armpatches of the Turkistanische Legion in France, probably owing to their racial appearance and sloppy investigation on the part of the Germans, but the film's costumers missed that that ost-troops had its own ranking system worn on the collars, while the characters have otherwise typical German collar tabs (which indicated branch but not rank). This has no bearing whatsoever on the quality of the film.

Bluehawk2008 I loved ‘My Way’ but what nick said about the ending is false, the Korean is injured and won’t survive so he gives his ID tags to the Japanese guy so the Americans wouldn’t shoot him on the spot for being a Japanese soldier. The Japanese man then goes on living under the Korean man’s name as a means of honouring his memory. That last bit may be wrong but that is what I thought when it shows him in a race when the announcer calls out the Korean guy’s name.

Bluehawk2008 is it your only problem? C'mon that whole movie looks ridiculous. The battle tactics are horrible. I almost died because of laughing, when the girl shot the fucking plane with rifle. And things are getting even worse when they get in Russia. For example, there is no mountains at all at the area where heroes supposed to be kept. There are much more dull moments that not allow to treat that movie seriously. It's more comedy than drama. Unfortunately, most of Korean war movies look like trash because of ridiculousness of their scripts, even though they have good directings. The best Korean war movie, I watched so far was 38's Parallel, the other were pretentious but silly.

Nikita Yermak _Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War_ and _Joint Security Area_ are actually two of my favorite war films that were made by Koreans. Neither story is actually true or completely accurate in detail of course, but they both do an excellent job in capturing the sense of feeling of what war is doing to these two nations of Koreans. One focuses on the past during the Korean War and the other takes place around the present along the 38th Parallel. Neither film is based on true events, but you could definitely say they were inspired by true events. They're not perfectly historic films and no film ever is, but they're great ones for sure that were made by Korean people.

It's good. About the only significant inaccuracy there is the flooding. A single broken valve or joint on a big waterway could potentially sink the submarine. When more than one breaks, the ship is basically doomed. Just because of the pressure and rate of the flooding. Petersen exaggerated this for dramatic effect, since imitating the real ocean pressure on the Das Boot set would be very dangerous, and a single "normal" leak might not look extremely dangerous to the audience.

On the other hand, from an entirely philosophical standpoint and disregarding marketing, by stating "based on a true story" it might give the audience an entirely difference feeling and emotional attachment to the movie. @JDahl-sj5lk6 жыл бұрын
Old post but I'll add my share; I don't really have that much faith in the general public, so I think saying "based on" should be near the truth. Inspired by is a completely different story, and I'd appreciate if more films that say "based on" would say "inspired by" instead. "Inspired by" should still give the same emotional response, with the added bonus that people may actually think "this was interesting, I want to read up on this story to learn what actually happened" "Based on" is IMO spreading misinformation. And I think it's easier for people to then think "that was awesome" and then just let it be. But again, I don't have much faith in the general public.

I watched this awesome movie on Netflix a few months ago called The Siege of Jadotville. It tells the epic but widely unheard story of the men of A Company, an Irish outfit sent to the Congo at the height of the Congo Crisis of the early 1960s as a UN peacekeeping force who come under attack by Katangan troops. It follows the struggles of an untested group of soldiers facing their first taste of combat, a commander struggling with his own inexperience in the face of insurmountable odds, and the corruption and incompetence of both the UN and the State of Katanga behind the scenes which lead to this conflict. I think your input on this movie would be an excellent chance to both spread the word about this hidden gem of a film as well as educate us History Buffs on this lesser-known struggle tucked away in the excitement and danger of the Cold War. I completely agree with you. "Based on" and "Inspired by" should mean something. Putting it in films is not only irresponsible, but it cheapens actual true story films' credibilities. I grew up with this issue. Badlands was inspired by a story my father and grandfather were involved in. One thing I always admired about Terry Mallick is that he refused to allow the studio to say either "based on" or "inspired by" because he only wanted to take the idea and create a fictional story on it. When a few movie theaters said that it was based on real events, he sued them to make them take those posters down. (I later heard people saying I was the son of the main female character in the movie because they thought the last line, which was a joke Terry put in for my father, was real.)

I'm a big Bernard Cornwell fan and my favourite moments are reading his novels then getting to the historic accuracy section at the end and realising that some of the big *WTF* moments in the book were actually real (supposedly). I think it's more effective treating the story for what it is and then doing the big 'truth' reveal at the end. Maybe the Directors should consider that approach more.

Couldn't agree more. The Historical Notes are usually my favourite part of the book and a great way to end it. I was so amazed reading about the 'impossible' Battle of Garcia Hernandez, and so many other episodes of the wars. Of course, there's a flip side in his Dark Age novels where he often shrugs and says "I based this all off one sentence in The Chronicles of Anglo-Saxon England..."
@jochentram93017 жыл бұрын
That's how it goes for a lot of the Early Middle Ages, I'm afraid. The sources suck. But, I agree, Cornwell's approach works well for me, including the one from Sharpe's Eagle, where he apologises to the shades of the two British soldiers who historically were the first to capture an Eagle.

I would actually suggest Gallipoli instead (a movie I'm sure you've gotten requests for), which by coincidence also stars a young Mel Gibson......but maybe we should take a break from Mel Gibson for a while
@cloud20187 жыл бұрын
I will contest that The Bounty is not a bad historical film. They actually got a lot of details and plot points pretty accurate. I took a maritime history course in college and, through the glory of digital archives, was able to actually read William Bligh's ship log, court accounts and later letters that were written by Fletcher Christian. The movie was pretty accurate especially with the characters. The Marlon Brando version is the train wreck in this case.

For Fargo, I always thought saying it was a true story was more of a creative choice and had broader implications for the movie beyond what we normally see in "real" crime movies. Saying it's a true story I think adds contrast to the comedic elements of the overall film.
@bartz0rt9287 жыл бұрын
I remember watching Julie & Julia and predicting (correctly) when the second act conflict would happen. Then I thought, "Well this is a major plot development that was clearly made up for the sake of drama, what else didn't actually happen?" I honestly prefer to learn that a movie was based on true events after the fact (and to what extend the true events were embellished), so that I'm not wondering which parts did and didn't really happen while I'm watching. Knowing it was "based on" or "inspired by" real events never adds to my enjoyment of a movie.

There's a film called the Great Escape. It was made in the sixties and based on the unbelievable true story of how several POWs escaped from a German camp. It's a great film, check it out. I must say I think it's an example of a film that walks the line between the two. Like changing people's names, but to very similar aliases.
@fruzsimih7214 Жыл бұрын
The Great Escape is the type of movie that respects the general unfolding of the real events, but completely makes up all of the characters in order to create identification potential, tension and drama. It's quite similar in this way to the Korean movie described here.

OMG I always thought of this. It should be banned for any entertainment industry movie to have a "Based On" on them. It should just be Inspired By. I am so glad someone made a video about this. It sucks to see movies like 1492: conquest of paradise with a "based on a true story" when it is not even trying. Great video Hodges!

Funny enough Painekiller12 that really did happen. This sort of illustrate why the Joel and Ethan Coen claimed that Fargo was based on true events. Real events sometime are crazier then fiction. On a other note. My way is a movie I like to see. Especially after reading the events that inspired the movie.

Nowadays in the Age of Internet it's much easier for the average movie-goer to do their own research before and after watching a film to see what they get wrong and what they get right in terms of factuality, and this closer scrutiny should encourage more moviemakers to be strident in their authenticity efforts.
@543567767 жыл бұрын
KingKLR If only they did actual research. I find most people just "google it" and accept whatever they find, which isn't research.

Of course treating Google like a Brazen Head is never a good idea, but it's a good starting point for further research and better than nothing at all if one of mild interest is merely satisfied with a Wikipedia article.

For example I'm sure many who read this will now Google 'brazen head' to understand what I'm referring to, compare this to the old days when such a feat would take hours trawling encyclopaedias in the public library.

There's a scene in Saving Mr Banks where Emma Thompson is in a cinema by herself and she reacts sadly to something on-screen. It was one of those moments I was pulled briefly from the film, distracted, wondering, "Is this part of a true story, did someone in the surrounding crowd see her this way?" Seeing that something is based or inspired by a true story, to me, is basically a crass marketing gag. As much as i can appreciate life and stories that can warn, teach and inspire, I lay down my cash to be entertained. As always, great videos. This is a fine lesson.

I just found your channel. Great stuff. Subbed. I like 'The Way Back' great cast and also Jim Sturges. He is such a horrible actor. He mucks every accent that he attempts. He thinks all emotion is emoted via eye squints. Also, 'My Way' is such an incredibly powerful film. Awesome that you don't shy away from foreign movies. Im currently writing a script called 'My Way Back' its essentially about a Korean soldier who escapes from a Chinese prison and walks and swims to America. All four leads will be played my Jim Sturges. The story is inspired by a story that is based on true events that I read in a magazine that I imagined.

1) As a way of boosting the morale of fellow prisoners, it makes tons of sense. Real or not. 2) Well, if you were to escape from a Soviet gulag in the middle of fuggin' Siberia...what are your options? You'd pretty much be forced to walk, be it to Mongolia or all the way to British India, you'd be forced to out of necessity. If one is in a horrible situation such as in the gulag system, they'd have little choice. I would be surprised if many did not find themselves in the position of undertaking such a walk, I do not think many would successfully complete it, though. 3) The book came out in the 50's, the opening act of the Cold War and just after Polish aspirations of freedom were stifled by Soviet occupation and assimilation. Consider point 1, for boosting the morale of fellow "prisoners" the writing the book makes total sense. 4) The marketed Fargo that way to fuck with people. Fargo's "Based on True Events" tag has become such a laughable thing that I'm kinda surprised anyone's got a bone to pick with it in the present day.

@Dave_Sisson7 жыл бұрын
I proof read, corrected and indexed the English translation of the autobiography of Heinrich Harrer, the hero of Seven Years in Tibet. The film combines characters, omits some events, changes the order in which a few things happen and romanticises things in Tibet in the late 1940s, but it's basically accurate about events in Asia. The only major inaccuracy or distortion is that Harrer is portrayed as being a Nazi when in reality he wasn't political, but was told that he had to join "The Party" or he wouldn't be allowed to go on the Himalayan expedition. It also appears that most of the stuff about his return to Austria and interaction with the son he'd never met is made up.

I mean, no that's just false f*cking advertising you can sue for that shit (if you have a good case.)
@chrisedwards38667 жыл бұрын
No you can't sue for it. In order to sue, you must show that you are an injured party. And unless the film causes seizures, the audience is not an injured party. The only one who could sue would be any real people included in the movie if they are portrayed negatively - but as the film lies about being based on reality, there are not any real people underlying the characters.

Everyone is so binary. It's copyright, trademark, and patent that have to be talked about together in intellectual property. Though why Mickey Mouse's copyright had to be extended when the rodent is trademarked I never understood except as corporate greed. But there's more than a few discussions I've had about when a system needs to be patented and copyright wasn't enough protection.
