Well, being that it's Friday the 13th 2022, I'm 71 years old and since the late 80's I have had a very bad back. So bad I was on disability for years. I was a CNA (Certified Nurses Aide) for 31 years and tending to one of my patients injurer 2 of my disks. After two surgeries I ended up worse, spending most of my life in a wheelchair. Well, today, thanks be to God, and a good Doctor, my daughter. I stood up straight and walked about for over twenty minutes. Where before I was lucky to stand up for 2 to three minutes without pain. So this Friday the 13th has been a truly blessed day for me.

Reminds me of the curse of the 9th symphony among classical composers. Both Beethoven and Schubert died after writing their 9th symphonies and before they completed their 10th. Mahler wrote his 9th symphony then wrote Das Lied Von Der Erde which was structurally a symphony but was classed as a song cycle. After this he started writing his 10th symphony because he thought he'd beaten the curse but ended up dying anyway. It should probably be noted that Mahler was ostensibly the one who came up with this curse theory as well so perhaps there's a little bit of a self fulfilling prophecy in there?? 😆😆

My dad visited China for work frequently over the last 15 years, and found that they often would not have a thirteenth floor in many of their sky rises to appease their western visitors. Floors with the number 4 (associated with death in their traditions) would also be skipped. I’ve also heard that sailors will avoid leaving ports on a Friday. Though I’m not sure how far back this belief dates. Personally, I’ve adopted the number 13 as my favorite/lucky number somewhat in defiance of superstition. While my luck tends to be lacking, lol, I’ve never noticed any connections to Fridays or thirteens, so maybe it really is lucky for me!

Being French, I can testify that 13 or Friday 13th are taken quite seriously here. Specialy with the elderly. I remember family dinners where we would count how many family members would be around the table. If it happened to be 13, one of the grandmothers would not come to make sure we were only 12. Or we would invite someone else to join in order to be 14. I'd say it tends to disapear with the younger generations.

When my husband and I went on a cruise in 2022, I was surprised to find that, on board the ship, there was no level 13. Our cabin was on level 12, and we ate breakfast each morning in the buffet which was marked level 15…but it was only 2 levels above our cabin, the level above ours being 14. I didn’t know that superstition still held so much sway! I once worked at a firm, helping to onboard new employees. Everyone was assigned numbers, in chronological order. When I emailed one new (much sought after and influential) employee that his number was 13, not only did I get a phone call from him personally within minutes, but he called my boss, demanding his number be changed. I changed his number to 14, but I was astonished that an educated, experienced man like him would have a meltdown over the number 13. My family’s just not superstitious - my brother and sister-in-law got engaged on a Friday the 13th, and they labeled their picture “Our Lucky Day”. 😂

I live in Italy and the Italians have a strange relationship with the number 13. Here also, they won't set 13 places at the dinner table, but otherwise, it's actually considered a lucky number. The term "fare 13 (tredici)" means to win big. In Neapolitan symbology/numerology, 13 also corresponds to Saint Anthony, one of the patron saints of the country. Rather, Friday the 17th is considered back luck in Italy. Legend has it, in ancient Roman tradition, the word "VIXI (I lived)" was written on gravestones and it is an anagram of 17 (XVII). So, they associated the number 17 with death. Friday, of course, is associated with Good Friday and the crucifixion of Jesus. Here in Brazil, we need to take care of the black cats on the streets... People still think they are unlucky
@danhutson34602 жыл бұрын
I don't think Friday the 13th is unlucky. My father was born on Friday, February 13th, 1920 & lived to be 84. My mother was born on Friday, June 13th, 1924 & lived to be 98. They were married on July 25, 1945 & were married for 59 years. They had 3 children, 4 grandchildren & 12 great grandchildren. I miss them very much! May they Rest in Peace.

Another good video, as usual. I do have a tiny niggle though. As a student of history since the 1960s I can attest that the idea that the arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday 13, 1307 as a reason for the fear of the day in general was around long before Dan Brown and the Da Vinci Code. I did just look up the date on the "What day of the week was it" website and it lists it as a Thursday. Wikipedia does say the raid was overnight so that would explain that discrepancy. Just thought it was worth mentioning. Thanks!

At some point I'll maybe do a Knights Templar video actually and dig into it in more detail. I just got a book on them actually :-)

You forgot to mention Jason from the films 😜 A few years back on Friday the 13th we had a business meeting 13 of us got into the lift to go to the 13th floor at 13:00. We ended up getting stuck in the lift with 2 claustrophobics that one guy sweet talked into not taking the stairs. We had to try to calm them down and try to prevent one from having a panic attack and the other one puking. It was so odd....

Okay I had heard that 13 was unlucky but never that Fridays themselves were unlucky. Generally I'm with people that Friday is a good day because it was the start of the weekend XD I dunno if this one came up in your research but there has been a viral post on Tumblr (yes, I am a cringe Tumblr user) where they claimed Friday 13th was considered unlucky because that date was especially important to the goddess Freya. Since she was the Norse goddess of love it apparently involved a lot of naughty stuff and when Christianity came along it therefore demonised it as the unluckiest day. Probably untrue but thought I'd throw that one in there too.
@HistoryCalling2 жыл бұрын
I think Freya might have been another name for Frigg actually, so that ties in nicely with my research on her (Frigg).

I tend to find any Friday the 13ths in September to be rather lucky as it would be my birthday! Also I thought you said Paraskevidekatriaphobia beautifully! I don’t live in a high rise building, but I do drive coaches. 13 meter long coaches are less likely to sell than a 12m or 14m. Some companies won’t give the option full stop!

You mentioned the Knights Templar in the year 1307. King Philip of France, with his consent of Pope Clement V, falsly accused the Order of the Knights Templar of heresy to relieve his debts to them. They were tortured into confession and burned at the state. I just always thought it a fun day to mess with people! Back in the late 70s, while in high school, worked in a building we called the computer card. It did not have a 13th floor. That's probably when I heard of the fear of the #13. Good times😂

When I lived in a high rise there was no 13th floor. Many hotels I have stayed in on the east coast (US) do not have a 13th floor. It's really common for it to be skipped.

Many roads in England, including ours, don't have a number 13. The houses in our road were built in the 1930's. That's not that long ago and I wonder if they do that to this day?

I'm not terribly superstitious of Friday the 13th, but work always seem a little worse, but is that because we are thinking about it? Probably. My son might be superstitious of 13 though. He is still learning to count and always skips 13, going from 12 to 14, it usually falls apart after that.

It's just another day. The Italians had a tradition of 13 as a lucky number. I do not know if they still consider it as such. Social media seems to make the world so homogeneous. In my country, Malta, in times gone by, a Friday wedding used to be considered unlucky. Friday is the fasting day of our Lord's crucifixion. Nowadays, Friday weddings are common because they are cheaper. Nobody gives a damn.

In the early 80’s…. It was an awful time for me, during 3 Friday the 13ths in a row. First one, I was driving to work, it was rainy and misty and a deer hit me while I was driving 55 mph. It hit on the right front bumper and it ruined the front bumper, tore off my mirror, crushed the passenger door all the way to the back bumper…. Second Friday the 13th, I got a very bad diagnosis from my doctor and had to have emergency surgery…. Third one, I was driving in the downtown area where I live and was doing 30-35 mph down a city street, where a car pulled out without looking and hit the right front bumper of my car, again, all the way down the left side of my car….. There were three or four years after that, when I took a vacation day on Friday the 13th after that to not put myself at risk.

Another really funny thing is that most people in my Indian family have all gotten married on Fridays, including my brother who got married about a month ago. We have the Hindu ceremony on Friday, the reception usually the Saturday after or sometimes A week after on the following Saturday, And finally A more intimate gathering happens on the Sunday before the wedding couple leave for their honeymoon. If Friday is unlucky that’s probably means we’re all cursed LOL, Or at least those of us who have gotten married.
