Friday is not Frigs Day, it's Freyas day (Frejas Dag), Freya was the keeper of those who didn't die in battle, or rather anyone the valkyr didn't collect, if they fought cowardly, or as a old man in bed from disease/old age, for instance.

Yet more proof that stupid people believe stupid things. The 13th whatever still exists, and it's there, whatever number you slap on it, it is still the 13th. Or should Murphy have changed his name, and all would have been well?

There's also a strong similarity (possibly a common origin) between the story of Loki and the Greek story of Eris being the thirteenth uninvited guest on Mt. Olympus (there are traditionally twelve Olympians), bringing a golden apple, and triggering the Trojan War.

I was at a fast food restaurant recently and I noticed that the combo numbers jumped from 12 to 14. They told me they had no combo 13. It may have been Steak'n'shake or Chik-fila. I don't remember for sure. I couldn't believe they had done that. I and my sister were born on a 13th and generally speaking most of our family members were also. It's very weird. I have been very fortunate in my life and most people say that I have extremely good luck. 13 is my favorite number.

Even though I'm not superstitious, I consider 13 my lucky number. Thirteen figures into my life a lot, so I embraced it! My Mom would've freaked at the idea of the Thirteen Club. She was very superstitious. The salt on the table alone would've made her run. I was taught to always throw it over my left shoulder when I spilled it--in the Devil's eye. She was English, so I think this is an English superstition (?). And she avoided going on on Friday the 13th, no open umbrellas in the house, no walking under ladders, etc. Black cats were considered lucky in England, though, so luckily for me (I love them) we could have a black cat!

*Friday, July 31st, 1987,* is called Black Friday in Edmonton, Alberta. (31 is 13, reversed). That's the day we had an F4 tornado, which killed 26 people. Tornados that powerful are rare in Canada. It was definitely unlucky for people in the Evergreen Mobile Home Park, where many of those 26 people died, and a lot of trailers were damaged and destroyed. It wasn't so unlucky for my dad. He made a delivery that day to a business that had their warehouse flattened by the tornado; he left the place just minutes before it hit. He had a narrow escape, but he survived.

I'm Italian and I can confirm that Friday 17th is considered the "unlucky" combination. 17 is the "popular" unlucky number. There's also the tradition of not having marriages on Fridays or Tuesdays (neither Mars nor Venus). And being 13 at the table is also something that a lot of people avoid out of superstition.

A quick note here. Odin's wife is Frigge in the mythology and Friday is named after the god Frey. In Swedish Friday is called fredag, or Frej's day. Frej is the Scandinavian spelling of Frey's name.
@varana
@varana 7 жыл бұрын
It's not, though. When the Germanic peoples adopted the Roman-style week, they substituted similar Germanic deities for the Roman ones. For Friday, that was Venus, so they used a goddess of love (of sorts). That happened in areas that had contact with the Romans, and those areas (southern and western Germanic peoples) had no Freya (they called Frigg "Frija" or "Frea", confusingly). So yes, the name comes from Frigg, but some non-Norse form of the name.
@Ikajo

varana312 Are you trying to correct a Scandinavian about the origins of Scandinavian weekday names? You don't think this was covered in school? The Scandinavian word for Friday is fredag which means day of Frej.

After the stock market crash of 1929, most highrise buildings did away renting out their 13th floor. They normally use the space for their heating and cooling equipments. During the crash most bankrupt brokers would commit suicide by jumping out of the 13th floor. Most elevator banks go from 1 to 12 and then from 14 up. But not all buildings follow this pattern. I worked for 30 years at 300 Park Avenue NYC and started out on the 13th floor.

I don't believe in luck or superstition. In fact I consider the number 13 as my "lucky" number just to snub my nose at the whole concept of luck. Still, I have to admit a rather curious event that happened to me a few years past. I was getting ready for work, a day like any other. I was working 2nd shift at the time, 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. I live ~15 min. away from work. On this particular day I left my apartment at 1:37 pm, a little later than usual, but still fine. I arrived at work at 2:54 pm! Precisely 60 minutes later than I expected I would be. My first clue that something was off was the lack of cars in the parking lot. I looked at my watch probably 4 or 5 times, my brain absolutely refusing to believe what my eyes were seeing. It was not daylight savings, my computer kept it's time up to date and my computer was to blame for my leaving late. The file that I saved just before leaving for work was time stamped 1:34 pm. Conservative estimate of 3 minutes to get to my car and be on my way puts my departure time at 1:37 pm. So, what happened? Not daylight savings, not traffic, it was normal, very unlikely to be a seizure considering at no point did I come too at the side of the road, nor has anything like this happened before or since. Sooo..... what.... alien abduction? The most logical explanation I can come up with is.... aliens. I still, years later, can't explain what happened..... and yes, it was Friday the 13th, a fact I did not realize until my boss made an off hand remark about it.

If I understand correctly, it stems from the time of Moses. The 10th plague in Egypt (the death of all the firstborn) fell on the night of Friday the 13th according to the Egyptian calendar (each day was dawn to dawn). According to the Hebrew calendar, That moment was Saturday the 14th of Nisan (forgive me if I misspelled the name of the month) as the Hebrew calendar starts each day at sunset.

I had heard that 12 was considered a good number because it is a reasonably small number that can be divisible in many ways. So say, if you were dividing spoils amongst soldiers, you could split it evenly 2, 3, 4, or 6 ways. But a 13th share would have 12 people fighting over who got the odd share, and thus unlucky.

possibility: 12 is a highly composite number. easy to divide among several people. 13 is one more than that and is impossible to divide evenly given that it is a prime number. So a 13th item would, necessarily, create conflict among all those who desire it. And it could just be irritating to be unable to divide the number of an item you have easily.

In Italy, being a strongly Catholic country, at least in the past, the unlucky number is indeed 17, since the roman numeral XVII is an anagram of "VIXI", which means "I lived" (as in the past) hence it is associated with death and bad luck. Friday was never considered really "unlucky" in Italy, but Friday is associated with Jesus death and thus penance and sorrow and indeed Catholics fast on fridays.

FERMIN B F ive heard of this! I remember my mom telling me about it. Do you know where it comes from? Why it’s Tuesday instead of Friday?
@ferminbf2224
@ferminbf2224 5 жыл бұрын
@@anavaldivia4669 according to Wikipedia, the reason is: In Spanish-speaking countries, instead of Friday, Tuesday the 13th (martes trece) is considered a day of bad luck.[13] The Greeks also consider Tuesday (and especially the 13th) an unlucky day.[14] Tuesday is considered dominated by the influence of Ares, the god of war (Mars in Roman mythology). The fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade occurred on Tuesday, April 13, 1204, and the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans happened on Tuesday, 29 May 1453, events that strengthen the superstition about Tuesday. In addition, in Greek the name of the day is Triti (Τρίτη) meaning the third (day of the week), adding weight to the superstition, since bad luck is said to "come in threes".[14] Tuesday the 13th occurs in a month that begins on a Thursday.

I think that dining with 13 is very unlucky. 13 is a prime number, have you tried cutting a pizza into 13 evenly sized pieces?

My pants once split on a Friday 13, a few years ago. My school (private Jesuit boys-only) enforced a week of 'community service' ('Ignatian Service', named after St. Ignatius of Loyola), so a friend and I went to volunteer at a local hospital of sorts, which is where my pants ripped. From what I remember, I needed Mum to drive there and give me a new pair...

I honestly find the idea of Friday in the modern era being considered unlucky to be an anachronism at this point. If anything Friday is often a day we look foreword to since its the start of the weekend.

So many reasons to a simple number 13. In Chinese cultures we just consider 4 (四)to be bad luck because it sounds like death(死) in both Chinese and Cantonese 😗 most apartments floors replace 4 with 3A

Ack! Ack! FEWER people drive, not LESS people! It matters. It's fewer things that you count, like people or cattle, less things that you measure, like rice or wine.

I know spilling salt is bad luck bc it used to be so expensive. Salt all over the table during the meetings provides “magical protection”. People will put salt around their house or in the four counter for “protection”.

It all depends on how you look at it. Few year ago, i had idea, i started believing that its not friday 13th that is unlucky but the day before, thursday 12th, and guess what: it was, at least for me. I have lost my phone once, the other thursday 12th i forgot the key to the house, stuff like that. Funny is that this thing just happen randomly, but if you really believe that today something bad gonna happen, it will.

On a Friday the 13th, I was attacked in a parking lot and got a traumatic brain injury when my head hit the pavement. And I was so unlucky that the urgent care center I went to that evening somehow missed it, which, like, never happens with TBIs. The doctor I saw was later fired for an unrelated fuckup. Oh and I broke my coccyx/tailbone, which I'm gonna have pain in for the rest of my life. So I'll take my confirmation bias over leaving the house on only 2-4 days a year lmao

My son's father (and less importantly, my ex-husband) died on Friday, May 13th, 2016. He died a good death, in that he went out instantly in a head-on collision with a Dodge Charger on his Harley. He would have hated a slow, lingering death like cancer. I didn't hold the superstition until that day, but I can't shake it now even though I know it's not logical.

Thirteen is good luck for a baker or other cuisine - presenting chef to make sure that if a dozen is asked for, a dozen will surely be presented, the thirteenth being insurance against the loss of such a food item.

Twelve is lucky because it can be divided in so many ways. If you have 12 people, they can be arranged into groups of 2, 3, 4, or 6, which makes for a wide choice of seating arrangements if you have 12 people at a table. If a 13th person arrives, there is now no way to arrange them in even groups, 13 being a prime number. So having a 13th person is unlucky simply for that reason.
