Friday is not Frigs Day, it's Freyas day (Frejas Dag), Freya was the keeper of those who didn't die in battle, or rather anyone the valkyr didn't collect, if they fought cowardly, or as a old man in bed from disease/old age, for instance.

I don't remember for sure. I couldn't believe they had done that. I and my sister were born on a 13th and generally speaking most of our family members were also. It's very weird. Even though I'm not superstitious, I consider 13 my lucky number. Thirteen figures into my life a lot, so I embraced it! My Mom would've freaked at the idea of the Thirteen Club. She was very superstitious. The salt on the table alone would've made her run. I was taught to always throw it over my left shoulder when I spilled it--in the Devil's eye. She was English, so I think this is an English superstition (?). And she avoided going on on Friday the 13th, no open umbrellas in the house, no walking under ladders, etc. Black cats were considered lucky in England, though, so luckily for me (I love them) we could have a black cat!

*Friday, July 31st, 1987,* is called Black Friday in Edmonton, Alberta. (31 is 13, reversed). That's the day we had an F4 tornado, which killed 26 people. Tornados that powerful are rare in Canada. It was definitely unlucky for people in the Evergreen Mobile Home Park, where many of those 26 people died, and a lot of trailers were damaged and destroyed. It wasn't so unlucky for my dad. He made a delivery that day to a business that had their warehouse flattened by the tornado; he left the place just minutes before it hit. He had a narrow escape, but he survived.

I'm Italian and I can confirm that Friday 17th is considered the "unlucky" combination. 17 is the "popular" unlucky number. A quick note here. Odin's wife is Frigge in the mythology and Friday is named after the god Frey. In Swedish Friday is called fredag, or Frej's day. Frej is the Scandinavian spelling of Frey's name.
@varana7 жыл бұрын
It's not, though. When the Germanic peoples adopted the Roman-style week, they substituted similar Germanic deities for the Roman ones. For Friday, that was Venus, so they used a goddess of love (of sorts). That happened in areas that had contact with the Romans, and those areas (southern and western Germanic peoples) had no Freya (they called Frigg "Frija" or "Frea", confusingly). So yes, the name comes from Frigg, but some non-Norse form of the name.

After the stock market crash of 1929, most highrise buildings did away renting out their 13th floor. They normally use the space for their heating and cooling equipments. During the crash most bankrupt brokers would commit suicide by jumping out of the 13th floor. Most elevator banks go from 1 to 12 and then from 14 up. But not all buildings follow this pattern. I worked for 30 years at 300 Park Avenue NYC and started out on the 13th floor.

I don't believe in luck or superstition. In fact I consider the number 13 as my "lucky" number just to snub my nose at the whole concept of luck. Still, I have to admit a rather curious event that happened to me a few years past. I was getting ready for work, a day like any other. I was working 2nd shift at the time, 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm. I live ~15 min. away from work. On this particular day I left my apartment at 1:37 pm, a little later than usual, but still fine. I arrived at work at 2:54 pm! Precisely 60 minutes later than I expected I would be. My first clue that something was off was the lack of cars in the parking lot. I looked at my watch probably 4 or 5 times, my brain absolutely refusing to believe what my eyes were seeing. It was not daylight savings, my computer kept it's time up to date and my computer was to blame for my leaving late. The file that I saved just before leaving for work was time stamped 1:34 pm. Conservative estimate of 3 minutes to get to my car and be on my way puts my departure time at 1:37 pm. So, what happened? Not daylight savings, not traffic, it was normal, very unlikely to be a seizure considering at no point did I come too at the side of the road, nor has anything like this happened before or since. Sooo..... what.... alien abduction? The most logical explanation I can come up with is.... aliens. I still, years later, can't explain what happened..... and yes, it was Friday the 13th, a fact I did not realize until my boss made an off hand remark about it.

I had heard that 12 was considered a good number because it is a reasonably small number that can be divisible in many ways. So say, if you were dividing spoils amongst soldiers, you could split it evenly 2, 3, 4, or 6 ways. But a 13th share would have 12 people fighting over who got the odd share, and thus unlucky.

possibility: 12 is a highly composite number. easy to divide among several people. 13 is one more than that and is impossible to divide evenly given that it is a prime number. So a 13th item would, necessarily, create conflict among all those who desire it. And it could just be irritating to be unable to divide the number of an item you have easily.

In Italy, being a strongly Catholic country, at least in the past, the unlucky number is indeed 17, since the roman numeral XVII is an anagram of "VIXI", which means "I lived" (as in the past) hence it is associated with death and bad luck. Friday was never considered really "unlucky" in Italy, but Friday is associated with Jesus death and thus penance and sorrow and indeed Catholics fast on fridays.

@ferminbf22245 жыл бұрын
@@anavaldivia4669 according to Wikipedia, the reason is: In Spanish-speaking countries, instead of Friday, Tuesday the 13th (martes trece) is considered a day of bad luck.[13] The Greeks also consider Tuesday (and especially the 13th) an unlucky day.[14] Tuesday is considered dominated by the influence of Ares, the god of war (Mars in Roman mythology). The fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade occurred on Tuesday, April 13, 1204, and the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans happened on Tuesday, 29 May 1453, events that strengthen the superstition about Tuesday. In addition, in Greek the name of the day is Triti (Τρίτη) meaning the third (day of the week), adding weight to the superstition, since bad luck is said to "come in threes".[14] Tuesday the 13th occurs in a month that begins on a Thursday.

What about TGIF. I actually always liked Fridays. It means I have the next two days off. I also always heard the Knights Templar were killed and/or captured on a Friday the 13th.

I've always wondered how so many could see lies but not recognize that choosing to believe a lie rather that the truth has a permanent end.

13 is also the first double digit prime number without a repeating number, 17 is the second.

Egyptian mythology with the 13th stage being after death could still give a negative to the number since it is after you die, even though it is a joyous stage

Why would you bring up a reese's peanut butter cup? Those are already horrifying enough. But that thirteen club sounds like the most awesome thing ever. Is it still a thing? Can I sign up?

Hey Simon, on the same note, why are black cats, walking under ladders and stepping on cracks and spilling salt considered bad luck? Or any other superstitious things as well.

Andre Daoust ...why is anything considered good or bad luck? Why is luck considered a thing?

My son's father (and less importantly, my ex-husband) died on Friday, May 13th, 2016. He died a good death, in that he went out instantly in a head-on collision with a Dodge Charger on his Harley. He would have hated a slow, lingering death like cancer. I didn't hold the superstition until that day, but I can't shake it now even though I know it's not logical.

Thirteen is good luck for a baker or other cuisine - presenting chef to make sure that if a dozen is asked for, a dozen will surely be presented, the thirteenth being insurance against the loss of such a food item.

My uncle was very superstitious and would never go to work on Friday 13th. Considering he had a very dangerous job working for the railroad, I can't blame him for being cautious.

Twelve is lucky because it can be divided in so many ways. If you have 12 people, they can be arranged into groups of 2, 3, 4, or 6, which makes for a wide choice of seating arrangements if you have 12 people at a table. If a 13th person arrives, there is now no way to arrange them in even groups, 13 being a prime number. So having a 13th person is unlucky simply for that reason.
