I often wonder how different life would have been had Harold Godwinwson defeated William of Normandy (later William I the Conqueror). How different even our language would be.
@historyprofiles12 күн бұрын
Same I often wonder that. English history would have been completely different. Probably would be Anglo/Scandinavian as it was when Harold godwinson ruled and we’d still speak some variation of old English and it wouldn’t be mixed with Norman as we have now

Great video! It helps you understand what led to the downfall of Anglo-Saxon Kings. There were a lot of moving parts in this chaotic time, but I agree that a big part of the blame can go to Edward for the Norman conquest. If he would have focused on producing an heir maybe things would have been different.
@historyprofiles10 күн бұрын
So much went down during the time he was alive. Such a turbulent time with so many kings. Yes in my opinion he was one of the main causes. He was already basically a Norman after the 25 years in exile and had a lot of his friends at court that were Norman, they probably felt entitled due to hosting the king for so many years and a lot of them were genuine friends. So the Anglo Saxons were already used to his Norman ways. It was only due to Godwin and his son Harold that Anglo-Saxon/scadenavian law and customs were preserved otherwise Edward would have filled the court with more Norman’s who cared nothing for England really. His inability to choose an heir and hint at Harold and William that they would both be king is the most insane part to me. Thanks for watching Jared, always appreciate you!

Edward was a weak king who in his heart was Norman through and through. I’ve often wondered if his “promising” the throne to the Duke of Normandy wasn’t revenge on a kingdom that didn’t love him or want him as their king. It could also have likely been Norman propaganda designed to justify William’s invasion and usurpation. Most importantly, the throne wasn’t Edward’s to gift to anyone other than his own son. It was the Witan’s decision whom to elect; even the son and heir of a deceased monarch had to be voted onto the throne by them.

Is it really Edward the Confessor the only one English king canonized as the Saint? What about Edward the Martyr, for example?
@historyprofiles15 күн бұрын
@@nikicavujovic2332 I hate to be pedantic about this Edward the martyr was the king of east anglia not all england. Very good knowledge though! Hope you enjoyed the video!
@jamellfoster602915 күн бұрын
Ah the Confessor's namesake uncle who was indeed a martyr.
@ashtonbarwick669615 күн бұрын
Left his kingdom in a state of chaos and confusion. The witan had the authority to name the king’s successor. Out of all the English kings, he’s the only one to be cannonized, but he is also responsible in a way for a lot of the bloodshed. It really seemed like he felt he had authority to name a successor, but that wasn’t up to him.
@carrioncrow768715 күн бұрын
Where did Edward get the moniker The Confessor from? Its not mentioned anywhere in the video
@historyprofiles15 күн бұрын
Edward the Confessor, known by this name for his extreme piety. I didn’t mention it because his piety is probably a fabrication made by his wife, because they had no children. The later Norman’s who insisted this pious king chose William to be king did this and named him confessor to legitimise William’s rule more by portraying Edward as a saintly king

@@ray.shoesmith very good comparison. Harthacnut also ruled pretty harshly and they died the same way… who you think poisoned him? Godwin? Edward? Or some other?

Anglo Saxons crush them if not for fighting multiple counties at once vs lil England. First the vikings with all those scantavian countries. Then the Franks and Norman's. Not just William a bunch of other Dukes and soldiers from Frankia.
@historyprofiles15 күн бұрын
I agree, if Hardrada didn't defeat the english army at fulford, and the losses the english army took at stamford bridge then harold Godwinsson would have had more men, and more time to gather a bigger fresher army. So odds are the Anglo-Saxons would have won at hastins yes!

One of the worst kings of England, made a saint to legitimise later rulers.
@historyprofiles15 күн бұрын
Agreed. He was basically a Norman, Edward spent 25 years in the Norman court from the age of 13 or so. He favoured Norman interests instead of the people of his own kingdom. Failed to name anyone as his successor in his rule which lasted decades and hinted to some that they might get it (according to some sources). He was the direct cause of the Norman invasion in my opinion.
