Yes, please. I've just come back from a Christmas holiday in East Anglian. I visited Sutton Hoo, an extremely interesting site under the care of the National Trust. Replicas of some of the treasures are on show in an exhibition hall. Also, the home of Edith Pretty is open to view. This is not the only burial site, there are nineteen others. The story of how this escaped grave robbery is interesting, apparently the mound was disfigured by early farming, a robbery was attempted but they dug in the wrong place. Actually the story of how and why Henry VIII came to legalise grave robbery could make an interesting story.

As a friend of mine who is a professional historian explained me, in today's academia the term "dark ages" is really used only in the sense of a period with no or little written records, and whose history should rely most on material, archeological information. I was quite amazed by that 😮

Really took me back to the kind of history books from the 'fifties that were still popular when I was a boy. More of this please! There are many wonderful tales to excavate including that of Athelstan, grandson of Alfred the Great, who created England and led the English to such a great triumph at Brunanburgh. Yes! Chris I thoroughly enjoyed this tale about the dark ages of England which were not so dark. It seems to me there was a lot going on in England during this time it just wasn't recorded. I definitely think you should do a video about the battle between Edwin and the two kings especially Penda. I particularly like the fact that Raedwald was half Pagan and half Christian, as Homer Simpson once said God bless those pagans! 😂😅 A masterful work my friend and I am looking forward to the next episode of English history.

Yes, more of these stories are definitely wanted... Then again, the Sutton Hoo helmet isn't altogether unique, just as the name "Sjutton Högar" or "seventeen mounds" in modern Swedish suggests. (Yes, there were indeed 17 mounds at Sutton Hoo according to the archeologists). Furthermore, the Vendel and Valsgärde helmets from Sweden feature very similar motifs (included the horned figures holding weapons) and so do some helmet fragments from Öland in the south, at the time a Danish province. Still, the Sutton Hoo treasure is of superb quality - so there, the History Chap is quite right, and even as a very devout Pagan, I wasn't aware of Raedwald's story.. I wouldn't call Frigga a goddess of Love though, for as Wodens, Wothans or Odin's spouse, she is rather a goddess of home, hearth and motherhood, also a queen of heaven, long before the Christian Mary. Also - most researchers agree that the Sutton Hoo, Valsärde and Vendel style helmets were in fact inspried by Roman cavalry helmets, and emperor Constantines Goth Cavalry regements at Augusta Trevenorum or the modern day Trier, so the Saxons didn't "spurn" all elements of Roman culture...
@grahamtravers452214 күн бұрын
I'm not sure how Frigga from circa 500 AD precedes Mary from before 0 AD. It's known that "Saxons" liked to re-purpose Roman coins as amulets, etc.

Look, it was a great pleasure, a story to which I had to listen very carefully. the Viking Age is around the sacking of Lindesfarne in 793; but in Denmark we have archaeological traces that indicate organized state formation 500. A baptism fund has been found in an excavation of the rampart at Trælleborg north of the current Slagelse, which should have been built in 980 by King Harald Blåtand. Perhaps a pre-natinoal Christian society in Denmark. History is wonderful and thank you for your fine lectures. 👍👍👍And in today's woke times, these treasures should be returned to the Danes immediately😂

Well, unique again for sure in terms of topic to cover, Chris old bean, but then again you HAVE done last year's great Ancient Roman set pieces covering Julius Caesar, the successful invasion and conquest of Britain/Britannia in AD43, AND of course Boudica, plus some Medieval Age topics such as the Battle of Agincourt for one of 'em, so was a bit of a nice admitted change from what you usually do, especially as this is the Dark Ages whose huge amount of records sure are absolutely shrouded in mystery thanks to 'em being lost, and thanks a lot for the movie name say again, 'The Dig' I believe is currently on Netflix. So, after once again TWO stupendous videos from ya this week, our British military lesson giving superstar, what can we expect next time- the next edition to the Second Anglo-Sikh War, as it has been quite a time since the first one of THAT one of your series, another long forgotten much needed to be told and revealed story from either one of the two World Wars, OR, a brand new 2025 topic you haven't yet done for your amazing channel, again relating to what someone else recommended on Tuesday's posting? Guess we'll find out next week, so bring it all on this year, me old mucker, I can't WAIT wait wait to see what you'll give us
