General Gowon was a decent leader. The rumours that he went with a lot of money in anticipation of his overthrow was proved to be wrong. He went back to school and led a modest life, thereafter. He ruled Nigeria well and the country prospered. All the infrastructures enjoyed today in Nigeria were developed in his time, and hardly anything thereafter.

Karma is a bitch. This is exactly what Gowon did to Gen. Ironsi in the counter coup of May 29, 1966. Gen. Ironsi trusted Gowon more than he trusted his fellow Igbo folks in the military. But Gowon betrayed Ironsi 😢 and Col. Joseph Garba betrayed him too. Karma has an uncanny way of settling scores.
@oye82112 жыл бұрын
What did Gowon do during the counter coup, from alot of accounts I've read, he didn't have any direct hand in it.
@primeminister512 жыл бұрын
@@oye8211 Yakubu Gowon was actively and directly involved in the plot to assassinate General Ironsi in particular and to eliminate any external threats that may impede their plot. That was why Colonel Fajuyi was killed. Fajuyi became collateral damage trying to protect Ironsi, his guest, as custom and the traditional practice of hospitality demands. Not only did Gowon was a participant in the coup, but he also betrayed Ironsi, the man who took him in as a son.
@oye82112 жыл бұрын
I disagree on actively. Gowon was not active in the counter coup (that is a soldier actually firing or ordering stationed troops), as it was said after the counter that had to wait for his arrival despite the fact he wasn't the most senior officer (Brigader Ogundipe was), as the Northern troops wouldn't take order from any other tribe. If you say he was involved behind the scenes, I 'may' agree to that, even though from books I've read, online documentaries I've never seen Ironsi name brought up in that counter coup (I stand to be corrected with evidence). Infact it was what started the friction between Ironis and Murtiala Mohammed, as he felt cheated that on Ironsi assuming power, despite the fact they were both Lt. Colnels at the time and ge didn't actively take part in the coup. From what I've read it was Major T.Y Danjuma who came to arrest both Fajuyi and ironsi. I've seen list of those involved in that coup and I've never seen Gowons name there .
@primeminister512 жыл бұрын
@@oye8211 Gowon was in Dordan barracks directing and monitoring the actions of T.Y. Danjuman's operation code-named "Aure" a term in the Hausa language for marriage. What I'm providing are unbiased and undiluted facts that are incontrovertible.
