A humble and beloved man all over Africa and the world. (Check him out online). The bloody coup led by ambition and jealousy made Igbos overthrow the government only targeting Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, (Hausa), Akintola(Yoruba). Sir Ahmadu Bello,(Hausa), who was shot with his wives, Okotie-Eboh,(Warri), all non Igbos. The top military officers who again were killed with their wives, some in front of their kids, mostly Yorubas, (were all non Igbos.) The Igbo leaders, Azikwe, Okpara, Ironsi were all conveniently spared. Human nature does non take evil done against their people very well. I’m sure you remember Ironsi’s assassination because he was one of yours. What do you think triggered second coup and the killings? Imagine what was going through Gowon’s mind when the man came over to whisper a coup had happened in Nigeria; one of those rare moments in history caught on camera where you’re watching the man for his reaction. We would also see something similar when George Bush was informed at the kids’ school that planes had flown into the World Trade Center. That clip is all about his reaction and trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy in a moment when the country would never be the same again.

Point of correction, the planner and runner of the coup was Shehu Yar'dua not Joe Garba. It look a very long time for Yar'dua to convince Garba who gave the bloodless position. Joe Garba was Langtang and Gowon was Ngas both from plateau state but not kinsmen. Gowon was a victim of the 'Arewa' and 'namune' northern unity, but the muslims played him in many ways including handing over missionary schools to states (which got inslamized in the north) and northern elders (muslim emirs) held a meeting with Gowon and advised him to postpone handing over to civilians, which was later used a reason for the coup. There is more context but I'll leave these points for now.

I like Gowon. From this documentary and other reports about him, I do not see in Gowon a man hungry for power. I read that he did not participate in the coup that brought him to power. And when his time was up, he never fought to retain power. He even shrugged off the coup reports like, "If it happens, it happens." And he radioed support for Murtala through the Nigerian air space. Secondly, we did not hear reports of cruelty from him or personal corruption during his regime (outside of Biafra which was a war situation). Thirdly, his magnanimous reintegration of Biafrans after defeating them in battle and letting their military leaders go was very merciful by a military leader. Overall, he comes across as a peaceful Nigerian dictator who minimized confrontation and bloodshed.

History will always view him as a cowardly despot who mercilessly oversaw the killings of millions of the Igbos through a genocidal war and the subsequent economic blockade implemented against the Eastern region of Nigeria. The resultant effect was consequential mass starvation and unprecedented breakout of diseases. He is still ranked as one of the most brutal leaders in the world earning comparison with the worst of them all.

Gowon was the one of the most military president in that era. He's the reason power resides in the north till today. He came from where I could call a minority state, and yet, sold his freedom and that of that region to the hands of tyrants. He can't even live in his home town, so it's a big disgrace. He had the opportunity to fix Nigeria and ensure there is a equal right of any Nigerian to the highest position in office but he failed woefully. Who says Nigeria won't be better if we are divided? Who says the fore northern states would have combat the greedy taste for power at any administration? If south has a president, northern council of cabals don't want a minority representing them. Who do they refer to as minority? The Jos, the Nassarawa, the Adamawas, thks to the shameless restructure agenda of Gowon after the civil wars. I'm happy her alive to witness the massive disgrace and negative effect it has on him. The genesis of Nigeria problem started from General Yakubu Gowon (Go on with one nation, without a meaningful strategy in place). Shame on him!!!

He was not four star general. None of those generation went beyond Major General. IBB belongs to 2nd generation and they were the generation that first went beyond Major General, though from the rank of a Brigadier General to General are all referred to Generals.

I dont like this change of vioce i swear. Documentary is always done be male voice. I think it is for a reason. Because a males voice has a more serious tone .

The male voice is not only serious but more like a Nigerian.. The voice goes with action.. It captures your attention and focus..

@@engobopeter4910 may God bless you in jesus name , my brother. Amen. As a documentary junkie i know what i am saying. Ok apart from the change of vioce, the girl sounds like she is reading it from a book to us. We documentary junkies pick that up. There is a fundamental to everything, we think it is just vioce but no

@@oluwatoyinakinnusotu5737 i don't know if you are a female supporting your kind. But even though i am wrong about the vioce (which i apologize) the narrator sounds like she is reading it from a book to us. That is poor narrating. I am a documentary junkie and i can tell the difference now. You need to cram it and gist it to us off hand. That is a fundamental. Narrating is not just vioce. I have seen vin diesel do a poor work on narrating because he was reading it to us instead of 'gisting' it. So tell her to go to school and study mass communication. Documentary is not just about voice. Thank you
