Great video. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am torn between middle school and high school this helped.

I’m so glad! I am back in middle school at the moment & truly enjoying it. There are some things about high school that I miss, but I honestly love them both.

Such a supportive group. I miss them all tremendously and will forever be crossing my fingers to be so lucky again. I hope you are well! I took a bit of a KZbin break and missed being able to reply to your comment, but I’m so grateful you took the time to leave it!

I just discovered your channel and this video was awesome! Thank you for your insight and view!!! I teach 11th grade history so hearing your passion for teaching history at a middle school level is amazing and refreshing!

It’s not something we get to hear often. I always feel like the middle school teachers are hiding how great it is 😂 I have my reasons for enjoying both MS and HS, but I definitely feel like MS has such a powerful role in preparing students to tackle HS history courses. I’m so sorry I missed your comment. I took an extended KZbin break, but I was so happy to come back and see this idea resonating with others. It’s something I felt so much passion for when I was filming and I hoped others would connect. I hope you are doing well! 💜

I teach 7th grade history and I think the biggest mistake I made at first was not thinking they could go deep because it would be too hard to conceptualize. The kids blow my mind frequently with what they grasp and where they take things. I am so grateful they prove to me that they can handle the conversations every single day!! My school is 7-8 so I love being their first history class and teaching them how to meet high expectations.

Middle school teachers really are the backbone for history education. The expectations students have for their history classes in the future and what “learning history” really means comes from these special years. I love that you are guiding and challenging them to think critically about the past!

Great video. I have been a History teacher for nine years and have taught both high school and middle years History classes. I found that a majority of teachers underestimate the critical thinking capacity of the younger grades. Students are naturally curious and will ask great questions about sources when given the right structures. I have had Year 8 classes who were better at source analysis and evaluation than my senior students because they were trusted with the skills at a young age. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and I wish you all the best for the rest of the academic year!

Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experiences! I completely agree with you that entrusting activities like this to younger students really boosts their self-esteem as learners and can help them dive more deeply into the task.

I love teaching but teaching history is hard, especially when you have students who do not like reading.
@HistoryWithTiffany Жыл бұрын
It definitely has it’s challenges, and often students don’t understand that reading and writing are not just isolated to LA, those skills transcend a single subject area!

Thank you for this video. I am wrapping up my degree in History and aspire to teach. I've been very torn on do I want to teach high school or middle school. I have been leaning heavily towards middle school, such important time in their lives. You've made me so excited and I'm definitely seeing middle school in an entirely different light.

I took an extended break from KZbin and missed this comment but now I’m so curious- which did you end up in!? Either way, I hope you are well. It’s been a rough few years as teachers.💜💜

@@HistoryWithTiffany I have been looking into teacher programs here in Texas and there are quite a few, they just tend to be pretty expensive. Getting Master of Arts in Teaching right now.hoping to teach middle school. I think that's where my heart is.

I'm not too sure if you made a video but I was wondering if you could make a video about what exactly you did /do exactly for the history class you mentioned about the source and some quizzes if you could elaborate? It would be so helpful I'm about to teach history for the first time and I really want to know exactly what you were talking about.

Hi, Michelle! I took quite an extended KZbin break, so I apologize for missing your comment. Is this still something you are curious about? I am not sure exactly which lesson you're referencing here, but I am always open to talking about how I incorporate historical thinking skills (sources) into my classes!

I am so glad I found this video, I am also a military spouse who is looking to be a teacher and I am struggling with trying to teach with the moving around. Do you have any videos about being a military spouse and trying to become a teacher in more detail? I would love to hear your story

I took a (very extended) KZbin break and I am so sorry I missed this comment. Feel free to reach out to me on IG (@historywithtiffany) if you have any specific questions and I will try my best to help or point you in the right direction. I will try to get a video up about this soon because there are not a lot of us, but there are enough that we should be able to connect and support each other through this process!

Yes! I was exactly the same way when I went to college. I really pushed back on my middle school placement for my student teaching and looking back I am so lucky to have had that experience. I've been teaching 6th grade Social Studies for 14 years now and I love it. It's their first experience with an actual history curriculum and it's great to watch their skills improve over the year. I agree, building the foundation is key. 6th graders can analyze primary sources, think critically about major topics in history, and write claims that are defended with cited text evidence. They love the challenge and that adults want to hear their thoughts and see their thought process. I wish I had seen this video when I was getting my history degree all those years ago!

Nicole Woulfe 6th graders are absolutely wonderful! It is so fun to watch them start to think like historians and they are so open to questioning everything at that age!

Hello! Your video was a breath of fresh air! I started out as an elementary ed major and later on when I decided to go back to school and finish my degree (because life sort of happened lol), I switched to middle school after seeing a lot of troubling things that occurred nationwide on our American College Campuses. After much reflection and prayer it occurred to me that Middle School would be the best place for me to teach because I would be allowed more freedom to discuss complex concepts, especially within the social studies discipline. I love high expectations and focusing on the learner's ability to communicate not only their views, but also opposing views as well. What better place for that than middle school where the learners themselves are being introduced socially to complex issues. If we don't deal with them then, then by the time they get to high school, they have already been influenced so much! At the ripe old age of 45, I am now getting ready to do my student teaching as I finally finish up my initial degree and I am so looking forward to teaching middle school learners and all the drama that entails :). Preparing them for their FUTURE is exactly what we educators need to be focused on so they become the critical thinking, problem solving, knowledgeable, productive members of society that these students inherently want to become. Good job on your "rambling". It makes me feel really good to see teachers on this wavelength and with your dedication and drive. Keep up the good work!

I love this video! I'm currently getting my elementary education with a minor in history teaching because the only university near me doesnt have middle school specific degrees...so my degree will show I can teach grades 1-8 and that I have a minor in history teaching. I LOVED middle school and that is where I want to be at. And your video solidified that! So thank you for this !

Enjoyed hearing some of your experience. I also majored in history and am thinking of getting into teaching through an Option 6 Masters program for my education classes. Did you do something like this?
@HistoryWithTiffany4 жыл бұрын
I did not go that route, but I did complete an alt one year certification program after getting my BA in history. I did end up following that up with a Masters in teaching and learning history, but that didn't have a certificate attached to it. It was more focused on grad-level history courses and curriculum design courses. Good luck if you do decide to jump into that program and teach, I am sure you will love it!

I loved this video! I just subscribed. I am an aspiring teacher and my passion is ancient world history. I am located in Texas and I have found that I am not really interested in teaching Texas or American history so I’m trying to find out if I should teach Middle or High school students. What would you recommend? (I would prefer to teach the middle school level. Like you said, I believe that giving students a great foundation is the key to success in high school.)
@HistoryWithTiffany4 жыл бұрын
I think this is totally subjective. In your student teaching, hopefully you will be fortunate enough to at least go into both and observe and speak to teachers and students. I was able to teach 8th and 11th for my student teaching, and that provided me a lot of insight. I found that I was more confident in my first years as a teacher when I was a bit younger in middle school, but now at 30, I am comfortable in both settings. That was personal for me though, and for some teachers that doesn't bother them at all. There are things that I absolutely love about both, and would honestly teach both if I could. I really need to take the time to compare and contrast these two in a video! I hope you continue working towards being a teacher, and if there is ever anything I can do to help or questions I can answer, please let me know! (PS- i LOVED teaching ancient world!)

I’m slightly biased, but you’re definitely on your way to having the best job! With the right supports to help them access the material, they are going to do amazing things and they will leave your class with some very necessary skills for their future.
