I took a lesson from Ryan earlier this week and these five backhand teaching points have fixed my two-handed backhand. This is the correct fundamental way to teach and more importantly "to hit" a backhand. It does work and it feels much more natural and secure to swing this way. I haven't felt this much confidence in my backhand since I was a competitive junior tennis player (now a USTA 4.5 >45yr player). The best way I can describe an ideal contact point where the racket meets the ball is, "butter the bread" by smoothly brushing the ball in a controlled and slow upward motion, keeping the left wrist stable and avoid "rolling the racket head" over top of the ball. Your lower body smoothly rotates into the shot giving you plenty of power and pace. But the arms are relaxed and slow-through-the-ball. The most important point for me was to remember: the angle of the left wrist remains the same all the way through the swing, from contact point, all the way until the follow-through finish, it never breaks or changes. What makes this easier is to try and remember to finish your follow-through with the racket angle matching up with the "left side of the letter V ". So the top of the racket is above your head (pointing up-and-to-the-left) and the grip (lower part of the racket) is pointing down-and-to-the-right. Your hands should finish on the right (opposite side) of your racket head. Most players finish there backhand with the racket head pointing up-and-to-the-right-sky, and finish with their hands/grip on-the-lower-left-side of the racket head (pointing down towards the left side of their body), which would be mirroring the right side of the letter "V"(incorrect). Butter the bread and finish the swing by matching the "Left side of the letter V". Trust me it works, just watch Novak Djokovic's in slow motion, see where he finishes his backhand follow-through...left side of the "V" !!!!!!

Splitting the 2HBH movement into checkpoints is a winner. The human mind can think about only one thing at the time (yes guys, the whole multitasking debate is BS lol) therefore focusing on each one of them while they connect into a chain is what's gonna melt them into a correct stroke. Keep up the great work, Coach

Super good insight with the v angle on the finish to avoid wrist play during contact. This has been something I've been trying to pinpoint for the last while and this absolutely made it click for me to help me have a cleaner finish.

Nice job with the two-handed backhand. I've been working on my two hander since I've always played with a one-handed backhand and I want to be able to help my students better with their two handers. Also, Steve and Andy mentioned you on their podcast today--just thought you'd like to know!

Hi Carl. Yes I heard it. Haha they talked about my tip to keep the left hand on longer than what people usually do. Steve didn’t like that. Ha. My experience is people let go way too early with their left hand. So I teach keep it on “until just before contact” and then move it back. Steve apparently didn’t like the idea. No biggie. Thanks for the message!!!

Hi coach you point out a lot of key points, especially the high elbow. My only thought is there's no mention about the footwork, which to me is most important. In this video the feet take a lot of steps while focusing on the arms and the swing. The feet are important to me in pointing in front and rotating and opening the hip.

I was just analyzing my strokes on my IG page. You really helped with my forehand especially with catching with my off hand and using my off hand to stay above the contact of the ball rather than hugging myself. I’m hyped about practicing my BH on my BillJeanEyeCoach when I’m done cycling! It’s my off day but it’s never really an off day for me. #SeeYouOnTheCourts

Dear Ryan, I am a huge fan of all your footage. Excellent work, dilligently produced, nothing edited just to show-off all the gemstones…😃 Your clip on the 2-hander is fabulous. All the explanations on grips, „checkpoints, racket-face, etc.. however, to my opinion, there‘s a key aspect missing or falling too short, which is the role of the top hand. When I watch club-level players trying to hit / improve, a lot of them seem to be „pulling“ the racket towards the point of contact instead of executing the shot with the top hand (like hitting a forehand with the „fals“ side). Maybe you could consider this crucial aspect in another clip? Yet - keep your incredibly sensational work! You‘re the best out there in online-coaching land. Honestly!

Super explanation. Tx. Just a note that it's just one of possible variation. Is it like for Djokovic? For me it's too much brushing. My coach teaches me more flat BH (like Sharapova, Murray). so Racket on the drop stays almost perpendicular to the ground vs (30-45 degrees here) Another difference more pointy forward movement on the follow through and more extension of everything including L shoulder. No matter what need develop super flexy wrists (both) with the lag. This is the most difficult part for me

Hi Ryan, I recently watched quite a few of your one-handed backhand tutorial videos and was wondering - are there any other alternative one-handed backhand grip positions (which are different from the one you have described in your one-handed backhand videos) which can also be used effectively? I.e. continental, eastern (conventional, modified or strong), semi-western, etc. - also, if you could talk about the variations in heel pad placement (hammer vs. pistol grip), that would also be quite useful to understand - thanks for the content, keep up the great work!
