It is paradise! Only we found out that there is one explosive catch 😂

The one other place to look is the Propshaft tube.. Plucky's was nearly sunk after a lightening strike that came down the mast into his keel and exited through his prop shaft tube blowing a hole through the hull ... Where the tube exited the hull. It was leaking fast no radio he had to night dive fill the hole fast with waterproof epoxy putty.. dodge the sharks then back aboard and start bailing out fast. 😬⛵

I think of that video every time we encounter lightning actually. We checked our shaft tube area right away because THE nightmare would have been to dive into the water at night to epoxy holes in the hull!

Is it the vhf antenna or the actual mast itself that attract lightning? ⚡

Any surface way up there in the air surrounded by charged particles can get struck. Usually it is the tallest point in the vicinity - in this case, our vhf antenna. However, the book gives a case example where the mizzen mast of a vessel got struck instead of the main mast - it's usually the tallest point, but not always.

That was quite the cliffhanger at the end of what looked like a pretty relaxing passage - especially through the Rio Dulce, that area is gorgeous. I'm wondering if that patch of missing antifoul next to your depth sounder that you showed at the end may have been caused by the lightning strike? Thanks for sharing.

Yes we're still wondering also - it's still a mystery, because we dive and clean the bottom so often that we know every square inch of it. That patch looked like what we heard could happen if lightning tries to go through fiberglass hull.

Yeah we thought we were safe! 6 foot draft can definitely get in, but once you have more than 6 feet, you may have to hire the tow boat to help 👍🏼

Yes! That's our life. Our goal is to travel far and wide with a little more safety and comfort though - we're always trying to improve.
