Dealing with bad weather while at anchor can be terrifying. It’s extremely loud with the wind howling through the rigging, the boat violently heels back and forth, making it difficult to do anything, and the worst case scenario is always in the back of our mind.
Now, if you want sunshine and calm water, pleasant day sails and a large variety of anchorages to choose form, you’re going to need to sail in the summer in the mediterranean. Sailing in the fall is a very different story. It feels a bit like playing a game of Chess, with your opponents pieces being massive low pressure systems, sudden thunderstorms, and huge swell that seems to magically wrap into every anchorage.
To safely cruise at this time of year we are constantly checking the forecast for a break in the weather so we can run to our next destination. But perfect anchorages with 360 degree protection are extremely rare, so we need to choose our anchorages wisely. We need to take into consideration the huge wind shifts and massive swell, as well as what could happen if the forecasts are wrong.
There are a thousand variables to consider and we’re always thinking three moves ahead. But the pay-off for all of this trouble is that we get to experience one of the most renown cruising grounds on the planet basically all to ourselves. But the real question is, how much longer can we keep this up?

I too am old, weak, and poor. Plus, I loaded airplanes manually. My body is destroyed significantly. Many operations and artificial replacements I have. Nowadays plane cargo is in containers. Too late for me. I feel sorry for all the men I used to work with.

That lucky baby is drinking in sooooo much positive and varied stimulus, I love watching her quietly just absorb it all like a sponge. Most babies her age have spent the vast majority of their lives looking at the same 4 walls. Too right she enjoys the walks as much as you do. The dividends of all this are immeasurable.

Winter can be terrifying on the Med. Like you're a toy in a washing machine. We used to drive down to the shore, park 100 feet from the rocky shore and be amazed - then go wash the salt off the car. The pix were impressive! Glad you are heading for cover in Turkey!

Not sure where you are at the moment but if you can get to the Dodecanese, go to a harbour named Pali on the Island of Nisyros, we have sheltered there during many winter storms. Its a very safe harbour. Cyclades is not a good spot for winter storms. But if hit by a northern storm best place to hide is in sounth of naxos a harbour named kalantos.

While you are in Turkey so close visit Ephesus the ancient city. - and when you are sailing again consider going N to the island of Bozcaada.. very Turkish/Greek with a long shared history. Reed

Bill Pinkney, first African American to circumnavigate the globe, solo. Was our video crew's captian in the Abaco and again later in the BVI. Just seeing the first hint of snow here in Appalachia. The older i get, the more i appreciate everywhere I've been. Take care. Breath in every minute of your adventure. Someday they will be memories.
