ELLIE!!!!! My favourite female tap dancer of all-time and, in my opinion, the greatest tap dancer of all-time (yes, even better than Fred Astaire). Fred was a better dancer overall and a better "showman" if you like, but nobody could match Ellie's taps. Fred Astaire was even intimidated the first time they had to work together! He wrote of her- "She 'put 'em down like a man', no ricky-ticky-sissy stuff with Ellie. She really knocked out a tap dance in a class by herself". If you've never seen her in action, I recommend you click out of this video and watch the entirety of the "Begin the Beguine" tap number with Fred Astaire in "Broadway Melody of 1940", where she utterly outdances him. She is absolutely incredible.
In terms of film recommendations for Ellie, you have to discount "Thousands Cheer" and "Duchess of Idaho". They are great films but they only feature her in cameo-form. So, with that in mind, I would highly recomend all three "Broadway Melody" films- particularly "Broadway Melody of 1940"- as well as "Born to Dance", "Ship Ahoy" and "Rosalie". Honestly all of her films are fun, escapist entertainment and you really can't go too wrong (although I personally dislike "I Dood It").
