DESCRIPTION//
A tribute to the "Queen of Tap Dancing", the unforgettable Eleanor Powell (1912-1982).
ELEANOR POWELL FILMS FEATURED IN THIS VIDEO;
Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935)
Born to Dance (1936)
Broadway Melody of 1938 (1937)
Rosalie (1937)
Honolulu (1939)
Broadway Melody of 1940 (1940)
Lady Be Good (1941)
Ship Ahoy (1942)
I Dood It (1943)
Thousands Cheer (1943)
Duchess of Idaho (1950)
“Eleanor Powell was one of the very greatest, period, bar none. Not one of the greatest women- one of the greatest, period” - Fayard Nicholas
ELLIE!!!!! My favourite female tap dancer of all-time and, in my opinion, the greatest tap dancer of all-time (yes, even better than Fred Astaire). Fred was a better dancer overall and a better "showman" if you like, but nobody could match Ellie's taps. Fred Astaire was even intimidated the first time they had to work together! He wrote of her- "She 'put 'em down like a man', no ricky-ticky-sissy stuff with Ellie. She really knocked out a tap dance in a class by herself". If you've never seen her in action, I recommend you click out of this video and watch the entirety of the "Begin the Beguine" tap number with Fred Astaire in "Broadway Melody of 1940", where she utterly outdances him. She is absolutely incredible.
In terms of film recommendations for Ellie, you have to discount "Thousands Cheer" and "Duchess of Idaho". They are great films but they only feature her in cameo-form. So, with that in mind, I would highly recomend all three "Broadway Melody" films- particularly "Broadway Melody of 1940"- as well as "Born to Dance", "Ship Ahoy" and "Rosalie". Honestly all of her films are fun, escapist entertainment and you really can't go too wrong (although I personally dislike "I Dood It").

Eleanor Powell was the very best - grace, athleticism, style, and technical control unmatched by any other dancer, man or woman. And she was beautiful. Thank you for this lovely pastiche of Eleanor Powell's dancing virtuosity.

What I love about this woman is that she never took herself seriously,she went out in front of the camera and what you saw was what you got! Pure Magic! looking at her face when she is dancing, nothing but pure joy,A truly great entertainer that gave a 110 percent and enjoying every minute of it,wish we still had a few stars like her today,the world would be a better place 😎

Great as Fred Astaire, or Michael Jackson, a super athlete, by any definition, the greatest dancer of all time was not a man, but a woman. Trained by the greatest tap dancer of all time, Bo Jangles, was a woman, who practiced moves, using weights on her legs... Part Olympian, part percussion genius, and yes, just that good.

Love this video. I love the song and Eleanor's dancing. She truly loved to dance. Check out her 1981 interview. There was a time when she adored ballet and hated tap but then she decided she should learn tap to get more jobs. I'm sure glad she did! Nice job on the video, Laura!

Ahh, Eleanor Powell! I had initially looked into "Broadway Melody of 1938" because I was curious about George Murphy - and I wound up seeing Ellie dance for the first time. Needless to say, I came out of the movie understanding why she's called the "Queen of Tap"! She was such a special lady, and an insane talent. I'm so glad to find this video! A wonderful tribute to a wonderful star.

Fantastic. Thank you so much for compiling these amazing sequences. Eleanor Powell was spectacular. Fred Astaire had nothing on her, and I would say that she had even more range than he did. And she did it all looking so effortless -- the mark of a great artist.

@esmeephillips5888
@esmeephillips5888 2 жыл бұрын
@@arthurgearheard4701 We should be grateful that most of her work has been uploaded, but must never forget that it was intended to be seen on a mammoth screen, the surrounding darkness accentuating the gleam of monochrome cinematography, the sound well balanced and resonant. A spectator would be simultaneously engrossed in a solitary, experience and intermittently aware of a crowd gasping and spontaneously applauding all around. A few times I have seen Golden Age musicals the way most of their first audiences saw them. Suspension of disbelief is easier, and when a spellbinder is on view it is a time for rapture. I now think Eleanor Powell was the most mesmerizing performer in all cinema. Certainly nobody communicated joie de vivre better. If it shines through all the hard work, the endless planning and practise, that went into it, it was because she was- as she herself believed- divinely inspired to give of her best. And hers was the absolute best.

@esmeephillips5888
@esmeephillips5888 2 жыл бұрын
@@mickc4672 In the 1930s and 1940s a typical neighborhood cinema with 1,000 seats might have a screen around 40 feet wide and 30 feet high. Unfortunately b&w movies are seldom projected publicly these days except at cinematheques or art houses in the biggest cities.

The author of this video addressed your concern in a comment below. To paraphrase, one of the reasons she does them is to introduce people of her generation to these wonderful, and sometimes, forgotten talents. She hopes that her efforts might encourage younger viewers to seek out the original performances in other clips on KZbin. As a person who grew up watching these full films on broadcast television, I think the use of current music actually reinforces the timeless nature of the dancing talents of these Golden Age stars.

Thank you for spotlighting this great tap dancer who's often ignored because she's female. She's better than most men who are more famous because of their sex. That almost makes me completely forgive you for this awful music which almost ruins the performance. Miss Powell was dancing to the finest composers of American 20th century popular music. Cole Porter was hired only to compose for her MGM movies. For your own benefit of Education, please listen to The Original videos and you can hear what real music sounds like.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment, albeit negatively. I usually try not to reply to negative comments on my channel, but yours struck a cord with me and I felt the need to address your concerns. These videos are made partly for my own enjoyment, but also partly to introduce these wonderful actors, actresses and films to a modern audience. As a 28 year old growing up in a Netlifx/streaming world, I am aware that 99.9999% of people my own age don't know who Eleanor Powell is (or even care). With that in mind, my videos are made with the intention to modernize these performers and inspire people to check out thier work. All of her dances are presented, in their entirety, on KZbin for people to watch as they were meant to be watched. I also post film recommendations on every one of my videos, in the hopes that people will seek out their work.

My sentiments, entirely, Star buono. Can you imagine Hollywood - at any period in its hey-day - ever employing *hysterical gibbering-and-screeching baboon-impersonators* of this description, to dub-and-deface the original-performers' artistic-property in this way ? They are screeching-squawking, obnoxious noise-manufacturers, and someone - anyone - should let them know that. Candidly, I don't give two hoots if this is all they are capable of doing with their mouths (or whatever other bodily orifice , but, where I *do* take exception to what they do, is when they are crudely intruding-upon and brazenly-degrading, the exceptional work of the finest star-performers in the world of entertainment, to date !
