It's spot on to include The Cure & Depeche Mode as top acts of the 80's. The Hurting is my favorite Tears For Fears album by far ! A classic debut. Love that the Gary Jules cover of Mad World in 2003 led to a new generation discovering this masterpiece of an album. Let It Be is one of my all time favorite albums .. The Replacements Let It Be !

Yes that debut album is just killer. "Mad World", "Change", "Pale Shelter" etc. This has got me thinking that the Chat GPT's list is based on sales. I was pleased to see that "The Replacements" were mentioned as under-rated. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on this topic.

Although the results are mostly predictable, The Cure mention was a pleasant surprise. Also, the underrated picks are maybe the best reason to ask AI what it "thinks"

Yes, definitely check out Big Star. I think both their albums are masterpieces. I'm sure you'll recognize a few songs "September Girls" "In the Street". Great video RM.

Wow, it looks like you had a lot of fun testing AI. In high school in the 80s I had a Geography teacher who told us that as technology improved we would come to see that society would spend less time working and more time in the pursuit of leisure. I think we are on the cusp of finding out if that will come true, as AI seems to becoming ubiquitous in daily life.
@retromusings10 ай бұрын
It was good fun just all out of curiosity. I don't think I'd turn to AI if I were to write an academic DPhil thesis! I do wonder if AI will mean people, especially the younger generations, will miss out on discovering music organically. It's so easy to go online and secure information these days but it's unclear what sources these lists are based on. It could all be paid promotion? Just my thought. Many thanks for watching and sharing your views on this.

GPT is user driven like Discogs and Wiki. This totally is understood in terms of mass audiences with access to internet. I trust this response is respected accordingly. Keep at it... 🎼👌

I am resisting the temptation to use chatGPT, I keep thinking a AI robot will find me! I wonder what it would say if you distinguish between USA and UK. I was surprised so much UK in there. I haven't heard of the Replacements or Big Star to think of it. I think this ai recommending could be good but I cant imagine it would Rick roll anyone 🤣. The Eagles? I guess it would be difficult for AI to get through the hype and commercial pushing of stuff. It didn't do too badly though. I think the concept of concept album was going to ask to much for it. I'd give it a 3/4 out of 10, good job 👍

AI is such new territory at present. It will be interesting how it develops. It can be disastrous mixing facts with fiction as illustrated by Google's AI for images! Many thanks for sharing your thoughts and stopping by. Have a great weekend.

Where to begin....I could comment on every item but I promise I won't. The 80's was a great decade for me and my family, but as for the music, not so much....but do like Sade. Too much chorus effect and electronic drums, shoulder pads and big hair.... Stevie Ray Vaughan was my favorite player of the 80's because I'm mostly stuck in 1967 through 1974, and one of the last albums I bought was Dire Straits in 1978. I'm glad you mentioned The Velvet Underground! Lou Reed is still my favorite writer, but never tire of Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. BEST ALBUM COVER - Derek & the Dominos "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs" as shown in my moniker. Layla beats Stairway every time too! Sticky and Exile were 2 of the best albums of all-time, mainly because Mick Taylor was on guitar. The Beatles-Zep-Floyd-Who never came close to those albums, but then I also prefer The Small Faces and Faces more than those too. The ONLY band I like since 1990 is The Black Crowes....be sure to listen to Southern Harmony & Musical Companion, and Amorica. Stay warm, cheers!
@retromusings10 ай бұрын
Yes that Derek and The Dominos cover is gorgeous. I have a re-issue of that lp. I think if the questions were narrowed down to certain music decades the answers would certainly be very different and more focussed. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on this.

Another fun experiment. Glad to see it mentioned Cyndi Lauper as well. Rick Astley overrated? I think I need some stern words with ChatGPT! :D One thing that's interesting to me is the Anglo-American bias. Another very enjoyable video.
@retromusings10 ай бұрын
Oh that's a very good point. I didn't occur to me about the bias. I would have mentioned Ah -Ha as an under-rated 80s band.
@MyQuill41510 ай бұрын
AI's underrated picks are pretty interesting. I never heard of these bands so from that point of view, Chatgpt can put musicians on people's radar. I've always felt Kiss was all show and no substance IMHO. Great video and I like this AI theme. Are you doing more on other genres?

Hi. Yes. I will be uploading one on jazz very soon so do check back. Many thanks for watching.

An interesting video topic . I suspect that these resuts arise from several factors , which would include : Sales performance ( billboard charts , etc . ) Prevalence of articles regarding these albums and groups Musical tastes of the programmers , to name a few . Nevertheless , it’s still very interesting . Any interest in talking about your favourite Moody Blues albums , and songs , in a future video ? Cheers !
@retromusings10 ай бұрын
Yes I think the list must be based on sale as there are so many rock/pop songs that didn't get a mention. Thanks for the idea about doing a video on The Moody Blues. I just might do that. I actually filmed a video on AI and the jazz genre with more instrument -based questions but haven't had time to edit and upload yet so that will likely be my next one so please do check back. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts on AI.

It's chosen all the usual bands and albums so it must be based on how well they did in sales. I found the under-rated type questions most interesting.

I fear that might be the downside of AI. I wonder if young people will just resort to using AI to discover music? rather than organically? In the old days, we'd got record shops to find out what's new but the fact is it's 2024 and it's so much easier for people to just go online now to discover music. Unsure if I'd depend on AI as a source though. Many thanks for watching.
@charlesf280410 ай бұрын
I am wary of AI, admittedly. Depending upon how it's used it could be a blessing or a curse. When it comes to music and its answers to your questions, I agree it did a decent job. I, too, wonder about the algorithm(s) used as the basis for its choices, though. I wonder also what would've happened had you asked who the best guitarist, drummer, or keyboardist is; that would be interesting to see.
@retromusings10 ай бұрын
I too am a bit wary and wonder if young people will just go to AI to know who they should listen to rather than discovering music organically. I did film a video about AI and jazz and I asked more specific instrument-based questions like "who is the best jazz guitarist" and "best saxophonist" but haven't had time to edit and upload it yet. Stay tuned! Many thanks for watching and sharing your views on AI.
