I use Jason days almost cut across chipping style and I did it even before he became very popular. it is very good at distance control because it uses your shoulder with little wrist break and makes chipping a little bit more forgiving because moving the shoulder only moves the club so much rather than adding in some wrist hinge

Every pro should teach this technique! I’m a 12 h/c at best & yet I never duff a chip , even off the tightest of lies . Nothing can go wrong! 👍

I've used the "shallow pitch" many times, but as my "safe technique". So I use this one when under pressure, bad day, ... BUT it is not an option when in a tight lie or wet surface because you'll hit the ground first. Therefor I practice and use both techniques. I've tipped many people doing this and most are happy to learn it.

Tried this out at the range today. Almost no trouble with dialing it in and it was as consistent as my normal traditional chip shots. I actually hit about 50 traditional and 50 of this style, and while the number of shots inside a small circle around the pin was about the same, I actually had fewer chips that came up way short or pushed way long due to poor contact. Great trick to have in the arsenal!

Great video! I learned both shots and use them depending on the lie. A shallow path is great if you are on the fairway, I think it's more consistent. But a shallow path catches in the rough more so that's when I use a steeper angle of attack. Less grass between the ball and your club=more accurate shots.

I hit these low spinny 50 yarders in my channel. But it is a hybrid of these shot types really.. A couple off the tee and then a couple off the ground. Off the tee it's a good drill to find the lower grooves still and not taking much divot. After that drill it is easier to find that 'thinny' spinny floaty skipper and stopper :) Ball should be a pretty close to front heel to get club and ball smash factor close to 1 which helps to match the distance and controlling the shape. Also weight forward on setup is important and helps finding consistent and shallow path into the ball. At first it feels wierd to hit lob or sand wedge with an open club face and thinking to find the low trajectory but it comes when catching the lower grooves. They need to be in shape though.

This is basically what I call a "dead-handed" pitch/chip, which is what Steve Stricker uses. A very good technique when you don't want, or have a tendency to get too "wristy." I will use this most often when I am around the green since I prefer using a wedge as to putting from off the green, or little pitch and runs where you don't really want to add much spin.

Pete, I've had major issues chipping and pitching, mainly due to steepness of attack and deceleration. The shallow angle of attack has enabled me to be aggressive and increase my margin of error.

This is an excellent video! One of your best Pete! I love going through these old vids! Big believer in both of these methods. Loved the video, Peter. Although this may be nothing new, the video seems to clearly show the simplicity of the shallower (Jason Day) swing. Generally speaking, wouldn't this swing type work on more than just the pitch shot? Why are so many golf instructors hell-bent on forcing so many angles in the swing? Is it strictly a power thing? Steve Stricker may not be the longest hitter out there, but he's made a decent living on tour.

Pete, somebody below commented that this is good for tight lies. I find it much harder to be consistent with this technique on tight lies. I end up blading it. I assumed it was because the bounce pushes the edge up and it catches the ball. I feel like this technique requires a fluffy lie where the club can slide under the ball while a tight lie will require a steeper angel of attack to catch ball before the turf. Am I wrong on this? Love your vids man, thanks so much.
@peterfinchgolf8 жыл бұрын
you can use this pretty well of tight lies, it's about commitment and practice

Good stuff....with the dead hand wedge, what is the maximum distance you would be using this technique...I know you could power the ball, but this looks more like a feel shot....so what might be a suggested distance for this technique....i.e. 30, 40, 50 yards. thanks

I have been working on these two shots and find the wider take away much easier than the steep attack method although the later seems to produce more spin. The only trouble I find is the steeper attack produces a feeling of faster tempo of strike and more shanks, I really have to concentrate on tempo. I have tried to perfect this steeper attack as I find it hard to get the ball to stop on the hard greens I play on.. Any advice Pete on stopping the ball on rock hard greens.

I used to hit my pitch/chip the "standard" way, and I was never close to the pin. My instructor told me that there is way too many moving parts to that type of shot and that HE doesn't even hit that type of shot anymore. So I switched to the wider, longer Jason Day type chip/pitch swing and the last time I played I was so close to the pin on four or five holes that I just had tap in putts. I'm voting for the Jason Day swing as MY new standard.

Plus the quality of the wedge and the grooves you have plus the type of ball. A dirty old wedge isn't going to spin a low end golf ball very well no matter how you hit it.
@rydnskyhigh8 жыл бұрын
I've recently switched to a more shallow angle of attack and have had better spin with my ball checking up on the greens. This is if I'm around 20-50yrds out. For myself anyways...
@joebunc8 жыл бұрын
good video, I am sure you know, steepness doesn't increase spin. Its the dynamic loft that does, so you want a shallow angle of attack with forward leaning shaft to get more spin. Just changing the "angle" of the dynamic loft by hitting more down doesn't spin more..thanks
@Cornwall18888 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wrote somethings similar the important thing is 'spin loft' the angle between the angle of attack and dynamic loft, I think 54 degrees is optimal for spin. Hands forward shallow attack with a hint of draw caught a tiny bit thin is best I think, low launch high spin pitch shots Zach Johnson style
@joebunc8 жыл бұрын
yes jason gets plenty of spin despite the trajectory being softer, Trackman has shown high dyanmic loft with shallow AoA and slightly leaning clubhead

hi Pete which one is the lowest risk shot out of the 2? Thanks Ps good to see you back on the course
@hawaiidispenser8 жыл бұрын
I hope Pete answers, but I think it's kind of a trade off. The shallow angle is safer if you tend to hit fat shots, because the bounce will still slide safely through the grass, whereas the steep one will dig in and create a horribly weak shot. On the other hand, the shallow angle swing probably creates more thinned/skulled/topped shots (where you hit above the ball's equator and send it on a low, fast trajectory) than the steep angle swing. In general, I use the shallow angle on all pitches except for when I'm in deep rough.

Hey Peter! Loved your vid! Do you have some advise for a 65 yr old, 20 hcp rightie, 18 months playing, that struggles with frecuent hooks & pulls to left? I've taken lessons with two pros but I'm confused that one blamed my alignment and the other says too much in-to-out path? I can drive 250-260 on a good shot but I hook 40% and push and also slice 10% trying to compensate. The rest I tend to pull quite a bit and end up on the left rough 80% of my tee shots. They say I have good extension follow through but I feel I tend to hold it when I start hooking, so my distance suffers from it. Same thing happens with my long irons and my best club is the 3W both in distance and accuracy with slight fade to fairly straight shots. HELP! I appreciate your time to answer this!
