HITCH CORDS: Best & Worst Options - Specs & Personal Opinions for Arborists & Tree Climbers!

In this episode, I go over the majority of the hitch cords available on the market right now for use by arborists and tree climbers and I provide specifications and technical details for each one! After that, I provide my personal opinion of each cord. There were only a few that I thought weren't that great, so it was hard to find anything truly terrible in a sea of good choices. My goal, more than anything else, was to help raise awareness of all of the different choices that are available right now from places like TreeStuff, WesSpur, Arbsession, SherrillTree and Bartlettman. All of these sites can be visited by adding a "dot" com after their names in a browser. My personal favorites are WesSpur and TreeStuff; just look under "prusik/tech cordage."

I’m still baffled why no one likes or reviews the Ice prusik by R. logic. It is by far, to me, the best gripping flexible prusik made. It grips awesome and releases awesome as well.

First of all, the Prusik is a friction hitch, not a friction cord. The Ice HITCH CORD by Rope Logic is a great one, but, if I'm not mistaken, it's single braid, and not kernmantle, which makes it sort of a relic in the climbing world unless you need a split tail or foot locking prusik for a 12-16 strand rope Thanks for commenting!

As far as I'm aware, Singing Rock is a website that sells climbing equipment and sells A LOT of products on Amazon. I tried looking it up and all I could find was another cord called the Timber by Singing Rock. What is your cord made out of? Is it an eye to eye with sewn eyes? All I can say for now is that there exist better hitch cords. Have you ever heard of Wesspur.com? They are my go to distributer for anything related to arborist style climbing and have the best hitch cord selection hands down. You can buy them with sewn eyes, they have a few spliced eye to eyes, and my favorite, bulk hitch cord sold by the foot where you can create your own eye to eyes by tying poachers knots at each end and tying hitches with it. For an 11mm rope, I would recommend the Sterling RIT Response www.wesspur.com/ROP356-rit-9mm-prusik-cord-by-the-foot Or the EpiCord 9.3mm www.wesspur.com/ROP361-epicord-9.3mm-prusik-cord-by-the-foot?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAt5euBhB9EiwAdkXWO2xhZzxjvRE_t15I3ytFPBxuytwJjyE1Ocm7iZKZOt1fNB_v5PJw_hoCzwEQAvD_BwE The picture on the website makes the EpiCord look brown, but it's actually a deep blue with cream accents. You can call Wesspur and ask them to make you a hitch cord of any size you want. Say you want a 30" eye to eye. They'll sew viking eyes onto each end at that length. You can also ask them to splice certain hitch cords if you prefer for a bit more money. The reason I'm recommending the 9mm and 9.3mm cords is because, on an 11mm rope you will find that your hitches are much more responsive and less grabby. So long as you set and dress your hitch properly, you don't have to worry about it failing at all. Tell me what your hitch cord is made out of. If it has any polyester in the cover, I would recommend buying something different.
