I miss Tim Krul at the WC 2014 in this list. It's easy to include midfielders and strikers in this list because they can come on and score goals but Tim Krul came on cold after 120 minutes of football and put in a masterclass in goal by either stopping the penalties or looking so big in goal the player taking the penalty missed. Without LVG bringing on Krul, managers nowadays, like Tuchel did with Kepa in the European Supercup game, wouldn't have dared to bring on goalies for penalties only. It really was an iconic substitution.

Krul's substitution was merely in a quarter final, for a team that did not end up winning the trophy, and Alfie stated clearly that the occasion was the deciding factor, not the sensation of it. Krul should not be on this list, and I'm saying that as a Dutchman.

As a Liverpool fan it broke my heart to see us lose to Real, but even I had to stand and applaud Gareth Bale for that first goal, it was beautiful, so elegant, what it took to pull it off I can't even imagine, the pressure of the moment and the occasion is so immense so to have the confidence and belief that you can pull it off is something that cements your name in history. His second goal was terrific too, but the first, for me, is the greatest goal ever scored in a Champions League final, a very close second is obviously Zidane's versus Bayer Leverkusen.

These are all great, but none will hold up to the impact of Mohamed Gedo or as he is called Mohamed Nagy( who is a former Hull City loanee by the way) in the African Cup of Nations in 2010. In all 6 games he game on as a substitute. He scored 5 goals and only failed to score in only 1 game and those goals included the winner in the Final vs Ghana. So in the 173 minutes he played, he managed to help his team win the title, got the top goal scorer award and won the player of the tournament. I have never heard anyone else make this kind of impact from the bench.

I appreciate the inclusion of the somewhat obscure substitution at the end, but making that the number one is hard to justify. I would say one of the ones that's won a major European trophy is more important than one which simply that won a domestic cup. Not that I disagree with any single inclusion, they were all worthy. Great video, as usual.

Marcos Llorente against Liverpool. Bringing on a defensive midfielder as a striker who then turns the game around from 0-2 to a 3-2 win against the reigning European champions with two goals and an assist. So impactful that he's remained a forward / attacking midfielder since then, he had never played up front before that game. Great substitutions should be more significant than 'just' goals imo, besides his impact on the scoreboard it was a wholly unexpected, bold move that shaped the fortunes of both Llorente as a player and Atlético as a club as a result. Llorente was their best outfield player when they won the league last year, contributing to 25 goals. He'd only ever scored twice professionally (for Real Madrid) before Anfield.

Raddy Antic for Luton against Man City 1984, last game of the season at Maine Road, 42,000 in the ground, a good 10,000 of them from Luton, the hatters needed three points and had to win to stay up, City needed a point to stay up, didn't matter what happened elsewhere, it was all or nothing, cracking game, lots of heart stopping moments, David Pleat sent on Radomir Antic, a former Yugoslavian international and a player of immense quality who was a wonderful striker of the ball with either foot and had skill to give away (RIP sadly passed now) with just under 20 minutes to go, with four minutes to go Raddy stepped up to score a great goal from outside the area that sent the Luton fans into absolute raptures and City sliding into the old second division. When David Pleat was asked after the game what was he thinking putting Antic on and he said "sometimes the most inspired thing you can do on the bench is hope, and when I put Raddy on he done exactly what i hoped he would do", he also said some time later that it was probably the most important win in the clubs history as it laid the foundation for the years that followed which were the most successful in the clubs history, they became a firmly established first division team (premier league of the day) that went deep into every competition for several years and won the littlewoods cup at wembley in what Trevor Brooking described as one of the best games he ever witnessed at the famous old stadium, David Pleats substitution, easily the most important ever.

Great content as usual but I find that there is a small shadowing of african football . I can remember many great substitutes both in the african champions league and in Africa's Total AFCON . Ghana in 2008 when Essien scored the wining goal against Nigeria when ghana was 1 man down or Mohamed Nagy Gedo how was the super sub in 2010 scoring 6 goals in 5 matches always scoring upon substitute and scoring more than 3 wining goals . I think Asian, African and South American football needs some attention as well

I think there could be a case for some honorable mention for Juan Fernando Quintero in arguably the most important Libertadores final against Boca Juniors because that substitution alone made a tactical and moral shift in the whole River Plate side, creating the opportunity for what were the 1-1 and later in extra time scoring one of the most beautiful goals I ever seen in the Libertadores history, and later finishing all with a pass for Gonzalo Martínez giving the final result of 3-1.

Idea for a video. Do one where it is impossible to mention your beloved Hull City. Great videos Alfie. Like the detail you go into.

Gini Wijnaldum getting subbed on against Barcelona and getting two goals to tie up the score on aggregate is probably the best substitution ever, Idk how it was missed

In the first match I watched in a stadium Mark Viduka came off the bench to help Middlesbrough win the match, including scoring the winning goal, in a 2-1 victory against a star studded Chelsea team.

I know very well why this didn't make the list but an honourable mention for Andre Schurrle who came off the bench to score a hattrick against Fulham in ten minutes. From the left of field too...

You’re a different looking person than I expected at least . I pictured you being a true Northern Anorak or Trainspotter Loner c/W flask , geeky spectacles and a notebook . I was astonished to see before the England game a young bloke more resembling a Surfer Dude 😁 ❤️ from Wessex witches

I'm biased due to being a Middlesbrough fan but UEFA Cup Semi-Final 2006 Vs Steuna Bucharest. Bucharest winning 1-0 in the first leg then being 2-0 up in the 2nd leg. McLaren brings on Massimo Macaroni and then Middlesbrough win 4-2. That to me is one of the best substitutions I've seen.

Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 176) I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored. If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.
