Ferguson missed so many good players at first but he never forgot them. Van Nistelrooy, Van Der Sar, Larsson, Owen, those are the players he wanted to sign years before. But still he brought them in even after they got old and those players still contributed so much.

@skillen19 11 ай бұрын
Don't know if you were around at the time but he is almost the poster child for being bad at one club. I remember seeing him line up for Inter against Villa in the UEFA Cup and being entirely anonymous, then seeing him for Arsenal later on and tearing our defence apart. That whole Bergkamp of the Week became quite a thing even though it is clearly very harsh.
@cheech7900
@cheech7900 6 күн бұрын
Bergkamp was shoved out to the wing at Inter and never really produced. Bruce Rioch took him to Arsenal, played him through the centre and the rest is history.

Here's a good idea for a video, that kinda came from this: "world class" players that went to lesser leagues and got embarrassed. You even mentioned a few of the possible candidates in the video. You could do also a sort of up/down video, where after every humiliation comes a player who left Europe for the big check, then owned that league, decided to go back to Europe and went right back to being a world-class player again.
@TheMightofDab
@TheMightofDab Жыл бұрын
Zlatan would surely be number 1 for the latter video idea
@BroadwayJoe99
@BroadwayJoe99 Жыл бұрын
@@TheMightofDab Yeah, Zlatan is an easy choice for that. After that, it gets a little fuzzy, at least from my perspective. On the other side, one that comes to mind is Gonzalo Higuain. And the worst part of Higuain's case was that he certainly knew going in that MLS might not be the most talented league in the world, but everyone and their dog has a full-ninety motor. His brother played in MLS for a decade, and probably had been telling him that for years before he came over, and STILL he just loafed around and got run into the ground. The line I kept hearing was that he thinking he could play "with a cigarette in one hand". That might have flown in 1996, but not today.

Another thing that happened with Adelaide the season that Romario played was that although they made the A-League Grand Final that season, they ended up losing 6-0 where Archie Thompson (the same Archie Thompson that scored 13 goals against American Samoa) scored 5 goals in it.

I don't think anyone who saw Roberto Carlos at Inter in the 1990s would say he was terrible. At times he looked quite brilliant. The only question I remember at the time was whether he was better than Javier Zanetti, whom Inter signed at the same time. There was was talk about how one of the club's signings that season was struggling - but it was Paul Ince, and never Roberto Carlos.

It just doesn't seem that crazy a story. Port Vale are traditionally a league 1/2 club. They got promoted to league 1 from league 2, it's not that outtlandish. And most clubs do a ton of charity work. It just seems afairly normal story. People tend to want to hear about absolute car crashes of clubs like Pompey/Sunderland/Derby etc, or total underdogs rising from nowhere eg AFC Wimbledon or Forest green. Im not saying noone wants to hear the story it just seems a fairly normal tale

Certainly not world class, but Patrik Berger at Liverpool and even Patrik Berger at Portsmouth, compared to his time at Villa was really something. He looked like he'd never seen a football sometimes. Was unfit, but refused to play for the reserves to get fitness. Was loaned to the Championship in his first season. And then went to the press and publicly encouraged Gareth Barry to leave Villa that summer leading to his contract being terminated.

I saw Rio in a live game for QPR where he was magnificent, blotting out any attack that came near. His pace was shot, but he made up for it with positioning. But his fellow defenders were rubbish, and to be totally fair, Rio could have been a bit better at communication with his defence in that game, but otherwise, it was masterly. So, maybe it was Rio not fitting in with his supporting cast and a touch of Anno Domini, rather than being truly terrible, perhaps?

Schweinsteiger is a bad example. He was way past his prime already when he arrived in Manchester. He sacrificed his fitness for the 2014 World Cup. He was injured but played all matches of the tournament of which two went for 120 Minutes. After the World Cup Basti wasnt the same anymore, he dropped off alot. Thats why Bayern gave him away. In Manchester they were dumb to put much expectations in him. Everybody in Germany knew that he was finished.

I'd like to add something about Romario, a lot of ex-players turned politicians in Brazil went for it because of money, religion and/or ideologies, power or just flat out the corruption lifestyle that is rampant here. Romario on the other way, went on politics because he does have one child with Down's syndrome, and back than, the usual way of treatment for that and the majority of disabilities was just locking them up on some state-owned asylum. The initial stages of his career as a congressman was focused on improving the lives of ppl with disabilities on Brazil, and looking back now, I think he somehow surpassed the expectations (it's nowhere close to perfection, but at the time was a taboo just to see someone with DS in public with you, they were considered as people by the system and shit, nowadays it's MUCH better). I know, he's overly pragmatic with another stuff, very outspoken and on a uncharacteristic way for an idol turned politician, does not went over the "populist character" train. I'm VERY left leaning, but in my state, the politician class of all the spectrum are so inapt, corrupted or outwardly pathological, that everytime he tries to run, as a congressman or as a governor, I vote for him instead of the names on tge left-wing agenda, just because i know, that are thing i don't like, but none of things i do hate and unfortunately that's how you choose someone to vote on Brazil (And yes, because of all of that he is unscathed by the wild polarization that's happening here, it's like he is against all the sides just the right amount to not be hated for not being on the same agenda as the enemy beside don't being an allied.) Well, with that said, love your videos, your production and the gargantuan amount of knowledge you have, you're a terrific bloke, the best sports channel on the platform, I wish your content never changes!

Imo for the world class definition you can't really say the top 2 or 3 in each position cause that means the definition always changes. If someone scores 40 goals in a season, but scored less than cr7 messi and suarez, then is he world class? And about the Rio example back then (let's say 2008 during the double winning season) then we had Terry vidic rio puyol cannavaro, each one was world class

A genius who a team does NOT suit is never going to work as well as with a team with whom they DO fit. This is so obvious it's amazing that it needs to be said! This is why players who perform marvellously at one club do not necessarily continue to perform as effectively with a new club. This would be particularly true of members of the new club deliberately play to undermine the newcomer for whatever reason.

Nice list and I think there's definitely room for a second video here. If you do, i would like to suggest Jon Dahl Tomasson for his time at Newcastle. Think he ticks the box of world class with his performances for Denmark plus he was brilliant everywhere he went except for Newcastle. We still can't figure out what happened there seemed like a brilliant signing at the time. Also a nod to Florian Thauvin though not quite on the same level.
@andrew7taylor
@andrew7taylor Жыл бұрын
That's quite a bit of stretch to suggest that Tomasson was world class, the level of Bergkamp, van der Sar, Cruijff. The only world class team he played for, he was only an impact sub/rotation forward behind actually world class players like Shevchenko, Crespo or Inzaghi. And he didn't quite set the pitch on fire at Stuttgart or Villarreal either.
@fredlougee2807

Cashley was also really bad for Galaxy. The only reason he played so much was that he was their only option at right back. He was a failure at Roma because they have this thing in Serie A that defenders have to actually you know...defend. And he was always an attack-minded fullback, the sort of player who would be a wing back in today's 3 centreback formation. By the time he got to Los Angeles he was not so good at attack because he was just plain getting old and his defending was so shoddy that he was regularly getting beaten by the wingers of MLS...and he was arguably the Galaxy's best defender for those years.

Hmmmm...there's a difference between great players winding down their careers and not being able to replicate earlier triumphs and those who managed to come good again. Jimmy Greaves wasn't that great at Barnet and was still younger than Romario. In fact there are many more players who declined in the latter stages of their careers at multiple clubs, I don't think Ferdinand should be there, he was past his best and when someone you love is dying of cancer, it eats your soul, making everything else irrelevant and tiny; the fact that he managed to get himself ready to train and play is itself remarkable. Maybe the video could have been players wiith one disastrous spell in the middle/start of their career?? Also, George Best played domestic football in Australia and personally I'd rate him higher than Romario. People don't seem to understand just how great Riquelme was, possibly because we only see him through a European lens
