I always assumed that the Russians celebrate the WW2 victory on May 9 because when the war ended in Europe, it was already the ninth in most of Russia, but still the eighth in most of Europe and in America. The time zone logic works out...

The Germans surrendered on the 8th, but to a British general representing all the Allied powers. That was unacceptable to Stalin, who demanded that Germany had to surrender to the Soviets, so the May 8th surrender was rejected by them and the Germans were forced to surrender again, specifically to the Soviets, on the 9th.

As I said in the initial post, my "time zone" explanation was an assumption, which turns out to be incorrect. It still would have made sense, but in this case the actual history is actually more interesting.

Ok way off subject. I noted that teletype and it bothered me, just like it troubled me at the movies and at home (I am a 50 year retiree from telecommunications engineering). The action was like that of a high speed printer and much too modern. So I spent time doing a study. Yes, Hitler did have access to the best telecommunications, but at 45.45 Baud. That is 60 words a minute. I knew guys who could type so fast on the order wires (used for secure tech traffic) the keyboards would jam (being truly mechanical electrical devices). We also used to talk in 3 letter codes to each other, especially with the Navy.
