Just a historical note: the Third Reich had a fuel crisis. That's one of the reasons he attacked the Soviet Union. He needed the oil resources in the Caucuses.

In reality the attack against the Soviet Union was preventive, the German intelligence believed that the Soviet Union would invade western Europe because they were making a huge amount of tanks and planes, the German government believed that it would be impossible to contain a Soviet invasion because it had population and natural resources N times greater than the Reich, so the surprise and quick attack was the only way to defeat the communist army. There is a conversation between Hitler and the Finnish Prime Minister talking about this, look it up on youtube.
