I'm so used to people crapping in MJ in these films so your interpretation is a breath of fresh air
@aryan77672 жыл бұрын
AGREED. There was definitely sexism in the damsel in distress trope, and we cannot forgive that and must ridicule it, but i also feel as if the vitriol against MJ in this entire trilogy also stems from some sexism. Like so many people just do NOT empathise with MJ at all because she has her own flaws with traumatic and abusive relationships from many men in her life.
@danielwadford36992 жыл бұрын
@@aryan7767 If you think about it, the fact that Mary Jane came from a broken home means she had the potential to become a villain. If Sam Raimi did his version of Carnage, Cletus Kasady could have been a dark reflection of Mary Jane: a redhead who came from a dysfunctional family, has daddy issues, and struggles with love. However since Mary Jane had Peter as her best friend, inspiring her to be herself she did not become a sadistic sociopathic murderer like Cletus Kasady. Kasady would have been what Mary Jane could become if she didn't have Peter in her life just as Eddie Brock was a dark reflection of Peter if he didn't have the moral upbringing of Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Peter was the only person who made her feel like herself but imagine if she didn't have him in her life. Raimi could have made a whole movie where Peter breaks up with MJ and then we would see what happens to her as a result. She would lose her sanity and go so far as to murder her own dad just like how Kasady killed his grandmother. Remember in Spiderman 1 when Aunt May was in the hospital with Peter and told him about the first time he saw MJ at age 6 he asked Aunt May "Is that an angel?". This quote could have been brought full circle by having Cletus Kasady be the devil to Mary Jane's angel.

I personally really like the scene where goblin is making Peter choose MJ or the children. I like the fact that Peter saves both. Here’s my (lengthy) personal opinion on the part where goblin is telling Peter to choose: Right before Goblin lets them both go, he says, “We are who we choose to be. Now choose!” Which is what this movie is about. It comes back to that responsibility lesson with Uncle Ben (recall the car scene where he’s talking to Peter about these are the years where he chooses the kind of person he’ll be for the rest of his life.) It’s that moment where Peter is deciding what kind of hero and person he wants to be-MJ represents himself, while the children represent sacrificing everything for the greater good. Clearly the children are the better choice, but instead he “chooses who he wants to be” and decides to do what he can to save both. But at what cost? Himself. The goblin was rushing at him, likely would’ve killed him while he held on to save both MJ and the children. I think it plays into that scene where he says Ben was his father. It’s a defining moment. He will do what he can to save everyone even if it costs himself. He’s growing up. But that’s just me.

This reminds me of Spider-Man: Life Story, where we see that Peter has frequent nightmares throughout life of failing to save uncle ben. So every moment he can spend as Spider-Man he gives his all to save as many people as possible, because he can't save uncle ben, but he can save everyone else, or at least try. Then, SPOILER ALERT, he gives his life to save the whole world from a future ruled by villains. After his death scene we get a flashback from shortly before where he tells Mary Jane that he had the dream again. But this time, he saved uncle Ben

I just rewatched it, haven’t seen it for like 12-13 years, and I didn’t expect to enjoy it so much. It really felt fresh somehow. No universe building, no overused CGI, just a movie made with heart. And for me… It really holds up. It’s a well crafted, well paced movie. I’m happy that this is the first Spider-Man I got to show my 8 year old son.

This movie not only introduced me to Spider-Man, it was also introduced to me at a very difficult time in my life. When I was a kid, superheroes were always just really cool guys that either had cool powers or cool gadgets, and never thought about the people behind the costumes. When I lost my father at a young age, my sister took me to the movies to help me get my mind off of it and we saw the first Spider-Man film. While watching it, I realized that Peter Parker in the film was just as goofy and dorky as I was, was super bright eyed, and we both lost our father figures. The way he cried over his uncle was exactly how I felt when I lost my father, so Spider-Man as a movie, Spider-Man as a character, and Spider-Man as a person opened my eyes to a whole new universe of comics, movies, games, and overall storytelling. So while people can tell me that it's mostly the nostalgia talking, I can honestly say that these films poured more emotion, heart, and soul into the franchise than any of the newer films.
