Hey! How ya doin! Now, to be honest with you, I had no plans of watching X-Men ’97, I had absolutely no intention of making a HiTop Films X-Men ’97 Video Essay. I had no idea that I would find X-Men ’97, in a world full of Disney+ branded nostalgia bait, to be so special. Point is X-Men ’97 is Special. It’s raw, and so very real, and as a guy who had no attachment to the original X-Men 90’s Show, I found myself moved by the story of these outsiders. I never really read X-Men growing up, of course I watched the original trilogy on loop, and adore X-Men First Class like no other, so I really did not expect to be so drawn and invested in the story of Cyclops (never thought I'd say that), Magneto, Storm and the entire xmen. This is al less an X-Men ’97 review, and more a passionate ramble about why I think the show is gem in a sea full of muck. I hope you enjoy this X-Men Video Essay, ramble, whatever you call this. I guess maybe I should finally watch X-Men The Animated Series, or just watch some Magneto send a coin flying through my head.

@@OBC24-q8hThe animation on the fights of Invincible look appropriate, since that universe relies on the more realistic use of powers as opposed to X-Men’s style and flair. But you’re right, in calmer scenes, it’s hard to believe that the show comes from some the same team that animated Generator Rex, which was Cartoon Network’s best animated action cartoon at the time

This is one of the best modern animation projects we have received recently. I can't say that I liked everything, but I definitely didn't regret that i watched it. I was a bit skeptical about the animation and the return of these characters and the animated series, but I'm glad it happened. Episode 5 is actually one of the best of all time in history of animated superhero projects for me. Initially I didn’t expect anything and was just wildly surprised at how brilliant of a show X-men '97 is. Truly hidden gem!

In all fairness, mainline DC and Marvel comics aren’t known for having stories with a proper beginning, middle, and end for their characters like Invincible. I’ve been a reader for years, and seeing the lack of a proper timeline and character progression got old at some point, and all I got for it was a loss of brain cells. I need to start reading actual books again…

I dont know if I can truly put into words how much I adore this phenomenal series. As a long-time X-Men fan and fan of the original series, even though I wasn't born when the show was around, HOLY S*** , THIS SERIES IS EXCEPTIONAL (pun intended). Now this is how you do a tv show revival successfully by growing up with your audience! No joke, this series is so masterfully well written, with absolutely phenomenal animation and truly compelling characters and complex, deep, dark themes that genuinely make you question the inherent societal bigotry and how to process internal thoughts of fighting for equality and how to do so in a way to help society grow from the status quo of discrimination and to do more than allow yourself to become numb to a neverending struggle that you feel like isn't your responsibility. Truthfully, this series is some of the *BEST MARVEL MEDIA WE'VE EVER SEEN SINCE ENDGAME* (except No Way Home, GOTG3 and Loki)! Compared to how phenomenal this series was, Fox movies seem like amateur student films with such a bare-bones understanding of how truly incredible and insane the X-Men stories can be when you truly hire people who care about these amazing characters. After watching this show and its epic finale, Bastion became one of my favourite X-Men/Marvel villains. Theo James especially gave a superb performance as Bastion; now, whenever I read a comic featuring Bastion, I'll hear his voice. Not only him but the entire voice cast, especially for Cyclops, Magneto, Storm, Jean, Charles, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee, Wolverine, Morph, and Nightcrawler, all did a tremendous job. This show's take on Cyclops and Magneto especially are pitch perfect and truly did both of them justice by finally putting respect on my man Scott Summers, whereas the movies butchered him everytime, and this take on Magneto is probably one of the most complex and deloped takes on the character I have ever seen. Bro; the number of cameos in this series is insane! Cyclops and Jean saying goodbye to Cable/Nathan had me in tears🥺. 10/10 SEASON 1 I NEED A SEASON 2 NOW!!! Hell I would love to see more Marvel 90's show revivals for other shows like the Iron Man, Hulk and especially Spiderman 90's series since they just gave us Peter reunited with MJ and a lot of us want to know how?

I disagree with you on one particular point. You say it was well paced, but I'm on the side that it was rushed, given only ten episodes to do what it should've been allowed at least thirteen or fourteen for. For example, the actual Madelyne story of Inferno is definitely the kind of arc that would've been given multiple episodes if it aired in the original series like Phoenix/Dark Phoenix, but the most important bulk of it (the reveal, the Goblin Queen encounter, and sending baby Nathan away) was condensed to one here. This isn't even taking into account my biggest complaint about the series, which is the adaptation of relatively anachronistic storyline elements like the Genosha event (and Emma Frost's diamond form as a result) and the Gambit season 2 teaser hook that wouldn't have existed yet in 1997 to be used if this were genuinely made in 1997 rather than a 2020s simulation of a 1997 series.

I kind of wish we got 2 or 3 episodes in between 1 and 2, where they get to go on missions to fight villains like Mystique or Sabertooth. I would have loved to see more of Storm before she left the team, more of Magneto being the new mentor and leader, and more of Gambit and Rogue before the latter's unfortunate affair. Either way, I love what I saw so far.

This show truly touched all our comics fans hearts and reminded us the beauty and maestria of these stories about superhuman individuals.

The live action movies come off like they are making fun of comic books. Like a parody of comics.

I don't know you, but whatever you're doing with the visual side, keep it up. Looking at the visuals on screen while listening feels much better than a lot of videos I typically just alt tab and listen to.

@@HiTopFilms I promise it shows man. The effort you put into pacing your videos and building to satisfying emotional parts is amazing to me. I can tell you really care about making the best video possible. I don’t just watch your videos, I really do feel them. The emotion pulsing throughout them is something I’ve never seen in any other KZbin video. I’m not just saying this for like a dopamine hit or smth, your work really emotionally effects me and I appreciate it a really lot🙏 I know how hard this shit is to do as well

I preferred this to the original run of the 90's animation. The original run was 20 minutes of non stop action. I badly wanted to see the X Men reflect on what was going on. Yes there are moments where they do reflect, however I never got a sense of how Days of Future Past, Phoenix Saga, the Alien Assimilation plot etc affected them. X Men 97 has all the epic action of the original show, but also has all the character moments I wanted. The Genosha incident happened and we have multiple scenes where I can see how it affected them. How are the mutants who survived affected? How are the mutants who weren't there affected? This show actually provided those moments.

words fail to explain ho great this series is for me. I felt my teenage self crawling out again to hunt down x men comics that evoke the same magic i felt from the original series. Dare i say this modern 97 version has surpassed it especially with Bastion being even better than the comic version. I thank this creative team for doing what they do and for Disney for allowing them to do it.

I wasnt excited for this show. I love the x-men but didnt really feel like getting into the cartoon and the movies had the highest highs and the lowest lows. Then i watched the first episode and holy shit, it's all i ever wanted and it never stopped being that

The MCU has had the lowest lows. No matter what, Apocalypse is far more watchable than the weakest movies in the MCU

@@LukeLovesRose Being watchable doesnt make it better though. Origins: wolverine is one of the most fun to watch x-men movies because of how awful it is and it's still way worse than any mcu movie

@@njh123 And I don't think you understand what I mean. I'm looking for a James Cameron style of visual storytelling. I saw in Apocalypse. That means certain scenes, many scenes actually are so well crafted, it makes me want to come back for more, over and over. Its no different than wanting to rewatch Aliens or T2.

They even went to get the original voice cast to do the voices over again except for jubilee, but the lady who did jubilee before played the future older version of jubilee and they did it all in the original studio they did it in before..

The animation style is 10/10. The content, character development, and pacing is a generous 6/10. Some episodes have some great 10/10 moments but they get averaged down by a lot of 3/10 moments and directorial decisions.
