They did my boy Nightcrawler SO good. They remembered he's multifaceted; he's the comfort character, he's the swashbuckling badass, he's the devout Catholic, he's the prankster. That's what makes Kurt so fun and interesting. He had some of the best lines in the show. His eulogy at Gambit's funeral in particular stood out as a peak moment. "Every gambler has a tell. Modesty was Gambit's." He always seems to know exactly what to say. If season 2 and 3 are half as good as season 1 this might just surpass Avatar the Last Airbender as the best show of all time. One of my favorite moments was Jubilee's VERY proportional response to Bastion's slight. Easily top 5.

They simplified everything and streamlined the story into a far more coherent form. Jean dies, months later, Scott marries Maddie (a regular human that looks like Jean), gets married, has a kid, then abandons them both to be with a resurrected Jean, Maddie goes insane with grief, makes a deal with the devil and gets demonic powers to become a Queen of Hell and wants to sacrifice Nathan. The show told the story much better.

Something else I loved is how the series referenced the psychic affair that was an obvious nod to Scott doing the same thing with Emma Frost in the comics. Only in _X-Men '97,_ I feel it makes a lot more sense, because… well, Madeline was the one that Scott has the *actual* connection with (at least in his mind), and who knows _when_ Sinister made the switch. So, wanting to continue a relationship with the literal mother of your child-doubly so when your son was taken from you, and you feel you abandoned him like your father did you? Yeah, makes a whole lot of sense. I'm not saying that I _agree_ with Cyclops' actions, but I _do_ understand them. Being able to rationalize why someone does the things they do is a huge part of making a fleshed-out character, imo.

Jean Grey also got some much needed redemption as she's now actually useful and has a real character arc. My only complaint about the show is the pacing. I think it goes to fast rushes through some plotlines. The Life death episode with storm should have been 2 full episodes and not a B plot. The Inferno storyline of Madeleine Pryer should've least been stretched to a 3 part mid season finale. Genosha would've made for a hard cliff hanger finale and bastion could've been the overarching villain of season 2.

I really enjoyed the portrayal of Wolverine and Morph's relationship. In the original first season run, Morph was fully intended to die, and only got revived due to studio meddling. From that, Wolverine was the only one who was genuinely hurt by Morph's loss, and the show spent a lot of time showing that. Unfortunately, once Morph came back, they were sidelined due to their mental health recovery, so we never got to see how the two characters would have hung out in the classic 90's setting. Morph in the first two episodes is seen snickering/cackling to themself in a comedic way, so it can be implied that Morph is a trickster who uses his abilities to play jokes on the characters; and we see exactly that in his first scene in 97', using the form of the Professor for some really dark humor, considering the circumstances. Transposing that behavior to Wolverine, I think Morph might have helped Logan in the past with his personal traumas. Logan has outlived so many people, and I can imagine that Morph, in an attempt to console their friend, would morph into those from Wolverine's past and tell him the hard truths others don't/can't tell him. Thus, when Morph is presumed dead in the original series, Wolverine would have lost someone who helped center him. We can see both sides to this in 97' when Morph turned into Jean in the club and rubbed the situation in Logan's face, just for him to finally get say what has been on his mind all day. Same with later when Morph offered the chips and beer, reading the situation, and knowing that Logan would respond better to the tough love of a quick fight to get him to let those emotions out. This is most clearly/awkwardly shown in the Goblin Queen episode in the shower, where Madelyne, having already read Morph's mind in this situation, exposits some revealing commentary on their personal thoughts. Morph can only ever joke about those things, because if they admits their feelings to themselves, it might ruin their friendship with Logan. And once he meets up with the rest of the gang, he immediately compares the situation to Hell, even before the Dante's Inferno stuff starts, suggesting that Logan finding out is the last thing he would ever want to happen. Finally, there's the last line of dialogue for the season, Morph finally admitting their true feelings, but still framing it in a way where they can back if confronted poorly, excusing it as for Logan's benefit more than their own inner desires. Morph is a complex character, and I hope they continue with their plot despite what some might say. I personally loved the subtle story telling this season.

I wouldn't call it meddling that brought them back since apparently they were shocked at how popular they were with fans and that arc of them tied pretty well into Sinister's introduction.

Morph is clearly in love with Logan, something the show built up over the episodes (and Beau confirmed) but Logan is straight. It’d be deeply inauthentic to his character to have him reciprocate Morph’s feelings. The only time Logan has been gay was with Hercules in another Universe. He did however, have an open relationship with Scott and Jean, but it was mostly focused on Jean. I doubt we’ll see either story adapted for the show though. I do think however, Morph will find a love interest in a later season. And I hope he does - he’s a delightful character, and also as a gay man, I don’t like the trope of “gay man pines for straight friend” - thankfully though, the voice actor said the exact same thing. So I think Logan, who knew Morph’s feelings all along, will delicately let him down.

And probably explain the mechanics of their powers in why not just turn into the Hulk all of the time, which maybe could have them more successful in a fight instead of being a cameo they don't want to be too successful. I think Morph could be really interesting in being a good utility power with depth that uses humour to mask insecurity, and maybe cannot just choose anyone's powers to copy at any time.

@Galloglaoch5 ай бұрын
I realize that is probably the reason why you want to see more of Morph and mean no harm in saying that, well they ar enot that deep of a character. Their only reason to have any hype is being non-binary. This is something and it is representation but, it fully served its purpose. In order to have more of them you need storylines and, well they ar enot really a character (so far). They are a token. People like them because their tokenism and thats ill-faithed, sorry. There's absolutely no logical reason to have more of them. They were perfectly fine as they were. I wouldn't mind a bit more of them with Logan but FFS don't have them and Logan be a thing. X-Men knows their share of tragic love stories and this has the making of one. I'd like to see Logan struggle to put him down and remain a friend despite knowing the truth. It can be interesting and it will involve Morph more. But besides that they have had enough exposure for a character that was supposed to be dead. And again I mean no harm, I'm just trying to point out the reasoning for wanting more of them is shallow (it seems). Nightcrawler, Colossus, the Maximoff twins, hell the Brotherhood of Mutants, Angel, Beast these are just a few of the iconic characters that deserve a spotlight way ahead of them. Even Sunspot didn't get enough really. Just a flash back to the episode in season 1 (origianl series) when Morph was heavily involved and was the most annoying thing on earth. Please don't do that again, things haven't chnaged just because they've labeled them as non-binary. Let them be a natural part of the team. That's exactly what succesfully introducing diversity and acceptance is tbh. But again, I do not recognise myself in them so perhaps I am missing a huge part of their appeal. Perhaps they deserve an episode about their identity to tackle an issue, I don't know. I just don't see how it will be...well, warranted.
@MashIsMe5 ай бұрын
@@Galloglaoch The reason I want more of them is to bring them out of the token status. Theres a lot that can be done with a shape shifter that isn't just cameo machines. Their love for Logan being 1 sided could be heartbreaking but mostly I'd just love to see them doing more. I don't want Logan to like Morph back tbh and frankly don't really mind either way if Morph finds a love interest. It would have been more satisfying to see them do more to bring sinister down given the importance between the 2 made clear in the opening constantly. All the other mutants you listed there I also love! Difference being that they all had something to do in the plot. Unfortunately you could remove Morph from the season entirely and all you'd be missing is a few quips and maybe Logan has to sit out of a fight for a few minutes with how often he falls out of the sky. So to be clear here, I don't want Morph to hog the spot light, I simply want them elevated to be actually relevant to plot and not just the easy to dub/edit out representation that seems to happen constantly in all Disney owned properties. I don't even necessarily care if the story given to them revolves around their gender identity, just that they're treated like a full character like literally everyone else who shows up in the title sequences. Nightcrawler is my favourite mutant of all time, closely followed by Storm and I loved them both so much in this! Genuinely this is my favourite depiction of Nightcrawler on screen to date. (I'm awful at typing tone, just to be clear, this was all meant with a kind/clarification tone, not to be argumentative or hostile)

For the record, the “Karen” is Val Cooper. She’s the Amanda Waller of Marvel. And calling her Karen is surprisingly fitting. She’s Xmen’s best Frenemy. The Rogue story was fantastic. Plus, considering how her mothers behave in the comics, it’s always nice to see that potential bite to her. Apocalypse coming back is good but, if he’s doing Necrosha, there are two characters I desperately want them to use; Destiny and the legend. The iconic. The Dark Mother herself; Selene! The changes really worked for the story. I am a big Maddie Pryor fan and whilst I would’ve preferred her and Alex, this story version really did nail down that she and Cyclops got caught up in the trappings of an evil man and neither of them are at fault for that truly. And I loved Cyclops in this. This is the best Jean has been in decades. Probably because we actually look at her friendship with Storm, part of her life outside the love pentagon and, most importantly, we see that she’s got that “sanctimonious bully” side that can and will lash out. They even made Bastion interesting. That’s an incredible feat. I loved that it was so soapy. So much so that Disney actually released a Days of our lives themed trailer. I’m not usually one to obsess over cameos but dear god, the moment episode 1 hit and we had the newspaper that had the iconic Dust, Marrow and Stacy X? I was strapped in. Although… Dazzler dies now? I will say I’m torn as to the lack of Fenris in the Trial of Magneto and Storm’s depowered arc. But they may have detracted from things. Especially if the quiet part is said out loud. Evolution was fucking lit! Had the best Brotherhood of Mutant too (yes, no EVIL moniker). LIke, they are just frat-boys (and girl) that want to be accepted and be cool and don't follow the rules and ultimately are easily influenced by evil mutants in fulfilling their schemes. Toad had a great theme, Wanda and Quicksilver were pretty cool, Blob too. So yeah...the show had great X-Men and great Brotherhood of Mutants. That's more than most of the X-Men shows can boast about.

As a long-time X-Men fan and fan of the original series, even though I wasn't born when the show was around, HOLY S*** , THIS SERIES IS EXCEPTIONAL (pun intended). No joke, this series is so masterfully well written, with absolutely phenomenal animation and truly compelling characters and complex, deep, dark themes that genuinely make you question the inherent societal bigotry and how to process internal thoughts of fighting for equality and how to do so in a way to help society grow from the status quo of discrimination and to do more than allow yourself to become numb to a neverending struggle that you feel like isn't your responsibility. Truthfully, this series is some of the *BEST MARVEL MEDIA WE'VE EVER SEEN SINCE ENDGAME* (except No Way Home, GOTG3 and Loki)! Compared to how phenomenal this series is, Fox movies seem like amateur student films with such a bare-bones understanding of how truly incredible and insane the X-Men stories can be when you truly hire people who care about these amazing characters. After watching this show and its epic finale, Bastion became one of my favourite X-Men/Marvel villains. Theo James especially gave a superb performance as Bastion; now, whenever I read a comic featuring Bastion, I'll hear his voice. Not only him but the entire voice cast, especially for Cyclops, Magneto, Storm, Jean, Charles, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee, Wolverine, Morph, and Nightcrawler, all did a tremendous job. Bro; the number of cameos in this series is insane! Cyclops and Jean saying goodbye to Cable/Nathan had me in tears🥺. 10/10 SEASON 1 I NEED A SEASON 2 NOW!!!

I think the most interesting scene in the series is when Magneto shows up with Asteroid M and is giving his offer to the X-men to join him. The two who join, Rogue and Roberto were the ones most directly affected by the events of the story, Rogue on Genosha, losing Gambit, and Roberto being betrayed/given up by his family. The rest of the X-men who watched Genosha happen on a screen from a thousand miles away still cling to Charles' dream. I would be hard pressed to believe any mutant who lived through the Genosha attack wouldn't side with Magneto. It must say something about how we can view a massacre, like a school shooting, through our screens and still be idealists, but extreme events can create extremists.

I do agree with you. This animated show is probably one of the best I’ve seen that has been released by Marvel especially if you compare it to “What if”. They not only were able able to imitate the art style (done by the animation studio who did Legend of Korra) of the original animated series but also how the seasons are done (just rewatch the first season, it has so many storylines from the X-Men comics in just one season) I just hope season two was given a bigger budget so that the season can have more episodes to make the plots lines more fleshed out and polished which could possibly improve on the Character-driven stories as well. After watching this show, I realized something. Charles is so easily able to criticize Eric because he's never actually seen genocide. Even when offered the chance to go back in Eric's memory to when his village was invaded by the Nazi's, Charles doesn't do it. I get the felling that, when Onslaught comes, it won't be from Magento poisoning his mind or whatever it was in the comics. It will be from Charles finally seeing what Eric has seen, and having it break him.
@arc73756 ай бұрын
The scenes with Charles and Magneto in Magneto’s mind where Charles tried to relate as also having g the same darkness and troubled waters was very disingenuous. Magneto was a child that was captured by Nazis, held in a concentration camp. His family were all slaughtered and the other Jews (and Gays and Gypsies) were all tortured, gassed to death, shot or beaten to death in front of him. Not to mention they were all starving, and died of starvation and disease. And Charles was the child of multi-millionaires who lived in a giant mansion and had everything his heart desires. Their struggles are not equal. Xavier has no concept of true suffering.
@seanwilliams76556 ай бұрын

@Galloglaoch5 ай бұрын
@@seanwilliams7655 But the theme generally is that Magneto IS right, but his solutions and ideas are WRONG. Despite him being right the RIGHT way is Charles' way. Co-existance, humility, patience and constant reassurance that the mutants are allies not threat, that the mutants are not coming FOR them but WITH them, that mutants and humans are ONE and can prosper together. All that despite humans constantly finding ways to fight against and murder mutants. Because as many X-Men stories have made as a point - every time someone as Magneto takes a stand, challanges the humans, wants to dominate or take from them, their worst fears are prove right and their own methods of fighting back have been justified. Magneto being right makes people like Trask also right about the mutants. That's what makes the X-Men heroic. They don't turn against all of humanity, despite some humans doing attrocious things to them. They remain vigillant that mutants and humans can and MUST live together in peace and no other outcome is satisfactory. It is pretty clear with the whole Magneto being a holocost survivior and knows the worst humanity cna do, yet often his solutions are to do to the humans what he fears they will do to them. Classic turning into the thing you despise the most trope.
@seanwilliams76555 ай бұрын
@@Galloglaoch Magneto became what he is after normal humans already proved him right. How many times should mutants turn the other cheek only to get slapped again? If anything, neither Magneto or Charles is right. Killing them before they kill you will only lead to destruction, but constantly holding your hat out begging for tolerance despite the atrocities against your people teaches humanity nothing besides that they can do whatever they want and the oppressed group will just take it. If anybody was right, it's Cyclops in the comics. He realized mutants might have to negotiate with humanity, but they need to do it from a position of strength unlike Charles.

The thing about Xavier in this show is that his dream is the reason the entire season happens. He begged Magneto to follow his path and try his dream, and Magneto loved him enough to give it his all. The problem is the dream isn’t viable in practice because there are always going to be leaders in the world who would rather kill mutants than accept them. Magneto knows that, and Genosha just made him give up any chance he would follow it, because that dream died with Genosha, and Xavier is too stubborn to accept that even when he knows it’s true. I love x-men and have for a long time, i grew up watching the 90s show and reading the comic. I always known that its been a allegory for racism and other forms of attack marginalized groups, I love how they handle the people who are against the mutants and make them kind of understandable for the 5 seconds you think about it till you look under the hood and realize that "oh their completely surface level and that's the point". The only thing i have a issue with the handling of this and the type of allegory is that mutants are dangerous, its not really the same as racism as no matter what race you are we are all pretty much the same besides the color of our skin. Mutants on the other hand are actually dangerous and all it takes is one powerful mutant to destroy countries. X-men isn't the only form of media that does this and i have this issue with almost all of them, people have a right to be afraid of mutants if all it takes is one of their abilities to activate and everyone around dies due to the amount of radiation coming off their body (actual event in the comics). Its like saying that I shouldn't be afraid of every guy that's born with a nuke in their chest, sure it only has a 0.0001% chance of going off but why would i wanna be anywhere close to them incase it goes off.
