The flashback about Kaien is slightly darker and less censored in the manga. His wife was killed on the mission and was never possessed by the hollow at the squad base, there’s more blood when Ukitake (the captain) slashes it’s neck and the Hollow possessed Kaien even manages to wound him across the shoulder as he’s coughing, Ukitake also shouts at Rukia to kill the possessed Kaien sayings it’s no longer him and when Kaien hugs Rukia as he dies, parts of his arm crumbles to show a bit of bone. It shows that the manga is darker and how many things were censored when animated

So yeah, Kaien Shiba is the one Kuchiki Byakuya and the Ukitake (the white haired sick captain of rukia), that reminds them of when they saw Ichigo, even they know they looks alike lol

About Ukitake sickeness...there is a reason why he is always sick but it's not yet revealed, not even for those up to date in the anime...Also half the time he's alright and honestly he is pretty power and extremely wise. That is kinda why he is still captain even with his sickness ! A great philosophical teacher too.

Yeah, I think we’ve only seen him really sick when he first appears in the anime, then here in the flashback about Kaien and then in one of the later arcs but other than that, he’s alright and able to do his duties as a captain.

Fun fact it’s mentioned Toshiro is older than most of these people like momo,rukia,renji rangiku etc…. His spiritual pressure makes him small & even like that for over 100 of years the author even says in a q/a he been like that since momo was born

Hey there! Being a while since i commented. When u said "Hitsugaya is a prodigy" it made me snort, Yeah he sorta is, but so as Gin. He isnt really much older then Hitsugaya - probably around 100 years at the most, which in shinigami terms is like 2-3 years. Also as i said before, there is huge power difference between captains. For example Mayuri (the captain Ishida fought) as also not so old (but older then Gin) and like like Hitsugaya kinda unexpirienced, but he compensates it with his gadgets and body modifications. Toshiro on other hand have an exceptionaly powerful zanpakuto, but due to his age he havent reach its full potential yet. If we take Ichigo he is absolutely different case - lets say he is indeed "born for this".

Remember the first episode that Byakuya destroyed Ichigo, when he said to Rukia, i get it, he looks a lot like HIM, and when Juchiro Ukitake first saw Ichigo and ask Byakyua, who he was !?! This is why... Kaien and Ichigo are not just looking alike, they are very similar in terms of personalities and value...They both have their heart at the right place, protecting their comarade, help others in need and fight with honor...I believe this is another of the reasons why Rukia trusted Ichigo in the human world... Also something i always wonder after that episode that i want to know your thought on it...What is the real reason why Juchiro Ukitake didn't filled the spot of Kaien after his death ? Was it because of guilt ? Sorrow ? Maybe it was because he didn't find a replacement inside his own squad ? Or there wasn't any who fitted his personality ? What do you think the reason his ?!?

You know what would be cool if Ukitake invited Ichigo to become a soul reaper after the soul society arc that would give him real motivation (just like Naruto wanting to be Hokaga, Luffy wants to be pirate king and get the one piece) and later on we learn more about Kaien Shiba's parents (Ichigo's dad knocking up woman and she gives birth Kaien and others) and then settling down in human world with love of his life.

Man, it’s so crazy to think about this fight. Gin and Toshiro were both some of the youngest prodigy’s the soul society has ever seen, both extremely talented and skilled for their age. It’s like kakashi and Itachi, one was the first to do it, the other did it even younger. I wish we got more fights with them honestly
