Perfect explanation. I personally could have used this information 39 years ago. My boys will definitely benefit from this expounded description of batting mentality.

We teach our guys the same approach. The younger the player, the more we look for 1 pitch....a fb in YOUR Zone with less than 2 strikes. The only other thing we do in bp is we make guys look at a good strike so they are still comfortable hitting with a strike if they miss a good one.

i look for a fastball early because i struggle with offspeed, most pitchers also want a 1st pitch strike

I keep it simple and look for a strike. Two strikes I widen my zone and watch for a breaking ball but load early Incase it’s a fastball,

Yo Matt! Longtime Padres fan here. Love your videos. Could you do a discussion on pitch recognition? The reason I ask is that I was watching F. Cordero take some at bats a few days back. To me it looks like he was working on his plate discipline (good) but was struggling with pitch recognition. But my interpretation of what pitch recognition is may be way different that what MLB players really do. So, a tutorial on what pro players call pitch recognition is would be great. Also, how would a fan pick up the symptoms when a player is doing it well or not.

Can you make a video on how to go deep in a game for starters and stay fresh with a high pitch count. I was told I was going to be in the starting rotation this summer, but I was always a closer/ reliever and I tend to get tired and lose velocity after the 4th. Thanks!

You are like the modern day Tom Emanski. I have a question about batting practice. Wouldn't hitters get better if they were being thrown curves, sliders, other junk, and fastballs in batting practices? Something to simulate what they'd see in the actual game. And do you think it's better for a hitter to learn off hitting from a pitching machine in a cage, or having someone throw batting practice? With a pitching machine, cranking it up to 90-95 however fast it can go could simulate the velocity easier than someone soft tossing you easy batting practice level fastballs ?

I read Ted William's book, and I seem to recall he said he'll always take the first pitch (he'll swing at a few to keep pitcher's honest) but one of the first things they teach pitchers is to always get ahead in the count early with first pitch strikes. So....is ambushing the pitcher on his first pitch a viable tactic?

How can we coaches, parents TEACH approach to our players? 12, 13, 14 and 15 year old's who seems NOT to have any approach on hitting! is very frustrating for me to see these kids just taking fastballs right down the middle and then swing at real bad pitches

Did you ever hit against a position player pitching in the majors or minors? Also, do you think it’s more common for a position player to get tossed into pitch in a one-sided blowout (or extreme extra innings) in the majors or minors?

wish i would've had this approach when young. coaches always said to never ever swing at first pitch. i always sat on first pitch, and would swing a lot. guys almost always threw fast balls looking to get a free strike. fought coaches all the time. so annoying.

@@haydencassera3110 2-0 3-0 and 3-1 are all counts where you can swing away. If the pitcher is behind in the at bat he has to throw strikes or put you on first.
