Thank you Paul, I especially love how you articulated the search for colour vs painting a picture (mood) mindset. I am instinctively drawn to the colour approach which gives me such a thrill when i see it executed by Monet. But my mind has also been opened up by tonalists such as Beckett and to understand more fully the differences in approach will surely be helpful when i am standing in front of my own work and forming my intentions. You have really motivated me to keep searching in those red yellows and blues in my current painting on the easel

Which blue color is best for painting skies such as those seen in the pictures by Monet you present here? Also, do you recommend buying green paints in tubes or is it preferable to mix the greens with whatever blue and yellow paints one has on the palette?

I personally believe monet and metcalf to be cut from a similar cloth, they did hang out in the artist retreat in france where monet lived. I think monet had a profound influence on metcalf, though I think metcalf kept more of an acedemic approach to his colour, as you can see in a lot of his work there is a greater tonal range than monet, but I think that's due to his choice of subject. I think eventually monet chose his subjects based on the lack of a tonal range, hence why he leaned eventually into an incredibly bright palette, whereas metcalf often used earth colours or mixed his paints to a greater degree. I do think essentially they were doing the same thing in terms of the way they were looking. Not to mention their affinity for little brushes. I would imagine monet probably spent time premixing strings of colour on his palette from dark to light, or blue to light green perhaps, to have them there when he needed them.

Marvelous discussion. Even if to me it seems a little Monet centric. Putting monet and inness up in comparison is interesting. But its like comparing the work of a poet, with that of a historian. Thank you!

Reasonable, Rob, but only up to a point, yes?

I question the analogy (poet vs historian) because I think it does a disservice to Inness. I see Inness as quite a masterful painter with his own profound vision that makes so many of his works instantly recognizable, such as those with late sunlight breaking through trees in the distance. A powerful sense of light that no one else has done, well maybe Rembrandt. In fact, I would say there is a good bit of influence by Giorgione to be found in Inness. But, yes, quite a different animal from the surely even greater painter, Monet. Aside from his pinnacle achievements with color and color relationships, Monet had an unerring ability to compose, that is almost unequaled.

You also have to take into account that the actual places, France vs New England had different atmosphere and tone which is seen in the values and chroma of colors!
