I’m so glad you made the recommendation to pick up a mini mass. But when it first arrived I didn’t understand why the volume knob had a grindy feel to it so I immediately unscrew the four screws and took it apart. If you haven’t looked inside I highly recommend it. It answers so many questions. There’s actually a speaker inside there without a cone. The volume potentiometer rakes a piece of metal across a ceramic and copper surface. That’s why it feels rough to turn. It makes total sense and I love it. It makes my matchless Laurel Canyon playable indoors on hardwood floors. Thank you so much for making the recommendation.

My third comment on this video is a simple thank you! I still have my T20/10 head, and took your advice and invested in an attenuator - Two Notes Captor 8. Got my 112 cab, loaded with a V-Type (gotta change the speaker eventually) but the head, the attenuator, and a line from the Captor 8 to my IR loader and I'm playing for days. Best thing I ever did for my rig, that attenuation. Listen to Uncle Eric, kids. He doth knoweth the secrets.

Sounds really nice, and great playing. I wonder which British bands used to play Hi-Watt amps, maybe the Kinks or The Who? The slashy punchy rhythm tone reminds me of those. J Mascis rhythm tone too. Didn't realise these cheaper build Hi-Watts were a thing. They were usually pricey, even in the UK. Here, I find it hard to justify new or second-hand Fender amp prices. Have a Vox AC, and a Marshall Studio JTM. Was looking for a clean Fender-ish amp, without the Vox grit/chime and deeper punchier bass. Got me thinking about this as an alternative to a Fender Princeton. I'm covered for spring reverb, with a Surfybear and have a good trem pedal.

First off, thanks for your wonderful lessons and beautiful playing. You've been an inspiration! Got a questions: So I have this allergy to nickel that causes my left hand (fretting), to break out into an itchy rash. GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? I've been dealing with it for years, have seen a number of dermatologists, and the only thing that helps is playing with nickel free strings (GHS Super Steels)... which are extremely "bright" sounding. I prefer warmer tones, so I'm wondering if you might have any ideas on how to warm up my tone. I play with my fingers most of the time as picks exacerbate the bright... I ain't no shredder so pick free ain't that much of a problem. Can you recommend any pedals that can help warm up my tone? Or other tricks? I recently purchased a Deco... which is really cool. How do you use yours? Do you set it and forget it or are you changing values all the time? Currently I have the tape saturation side of the pedal on all the time... and haven't messed with the double tracker much. The tape saturation side seems to help with the "bright" tone issue. What I Play: Suhr Classic Strat (neck pick-up to fight the bright) Strymon Deco Fender Princeton Reverb Thanks!
@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg! On your princeton, I would start with the bass and treble knobs quite low - at like 2. I think you'll get a pretty good balance if you set the treble at 4 and the bass at 3, but everyone's ears are different. Assuming there's nothing wrong with the princeton, that shouldn't be too bright. On the Deco, I set the Saturation side right up the middle most of the time. In that mode, it works as a compressor that grabs just a little bit of the spikes. If you turn it up to 3/4 then you get in to a really nice overdrive sound. Yeah, I don't use the other side either!

@@EricHaugenGuitar Hi Eric… OK - so I have the T20/10 (and Hi-5) and the Weber Minimass attenuator… and even though I have looked at the Weber diagrams and read the “how to” info.. and have several Weber speaker cables… I am stumped on doing the actual hook up of the attenuator to the T20/10… Do you have a video showing how you actually hooked those up?
@EricHaugenGuitar3 жыл бұрын
You'll need a female to female 1/4' adapter! Disconnect the jack from the back of the T20. Then, connect one 1/4" cable from that "Speaker output" jack to the "input" on the mini mass. Then, run another 1/4" cable from the "output to speaker" jack of the minimass to the now disconnected speaker cable. Aha! See the problem? You need a female to female adapter to connect the wire FROM the mini mass to the wire that's still connected to the speaker!

The Hiwatt sounds great! When blowing the the mini mass, are you playing at bedroom levels? I just can't seem to get similar tones. My princeton reverb, for example. gets the hounds howling at 1.5. 🤔
@EricHaugenGuitar4 жыл бұрын
It’ll definitely let you bring it down a lot! You’ll be able to run into that edge of breakup zone without being absurd. You’ll need a female 1/4 adapter and extra speaker cable and then you’ll be all set!

Hi Eric! Love your videos, man. I have turned all my guitar buddies onto the “bob Ross of guitar”. Question for you - I believe that you have a vox ac15? What would you recommend - vox ac15 or this hiwatt t20/10? Definitely hearing a bit more punch with this one and I dig that.

The Hiwatt by a nose! It's easier to dial in, and there's something so special about the growl and punch.

Hey Eric, can I pick your brain for a sec? Do you think there’s any difference in these two approaches... the T20/10 head vs combo (like you have)?... I found a head for $549.00 on reverb and two Weber alnicos for $149.00... I’m so close to buying a hiwatt but I’m trying to decide if I should get the combo or make my own cabinet with the Weber’s and a t20/10 head. I’d love to hear your thoughts on which might be the better route and why... thanks in advance Eric. From a happy subscriber 😁 -Ryan

Also, heads up to anyone who sees this... sadness can come in a form of YouTubing hiwatt custom 30’s/50’s and coming to terms with “I can only afford one a t20/10 or a 40/20” ha. But I still think some of these newer ones are solid for the price.
@danielcarter39282 жыл бұрын
hey man! love your videos. would you recommend the Hiwatt Hi5 or the Hiwatt T20/10 for low volume apartment use ? The T20/10 has built in reverb and mid controls which are bonuses for me, but don’t want it to be too much amp for me!
@EricHaugenGuitar2 жыл бұрын
I need to make a vid called "5 watts is still too loud for home use" Really, even 1 watt can be crazy loud. Sonically, the T20 is much fuller and easier to dial in than the Hi5. I definitely recommend it over it's little brother.
@danielcarter39282 жыл бұрын
@@EricHaugenGuitar yeah I have a Orange Crush 35RT solid state currently and put a Celestion G10 Vintage in it and it’s been really great for low volume playing. I’m trying to look for an upgrade in the tube world, and it seems harder than you would think to find something that checks all the boxes. I’d love a 12 inch speaker with onboard reverb, 3 band eq if possible, and gain/master volume with very low wattage or power scaling. The Laney Super Cub 12 looks like a solid option, but i’m having a hard time finding anything that checks all the boxes!

It is LOUD. Unless the other guitarist in your band has a half stack, I think you'll be plenty good with 20 Hiwatt watts!

@@EricHaugenGuitar yes it is! That whole album is stupid good. Hey, also, side question. I finally got this amp. I LOVE the tone. So versatile. SO present and articulate. I have noticed one issue and that is a sort of harshness to the sound, not a biting or ice picky or woofer quality, but like an air pressure that hurts a little no matter what my tone settings are. Did you find that at all? I love everything else so trying to pinpoint the issue.
@p2curtis3 жыл бұрын
Gear question.. What type of setting are you using on the attenuation? I was going to email you but your website says to come here instead. I purchased one, because of this video, but I'm not sure I'm getting the desired result.

Crank the attenuator all the way to the left and then slowly bring it up - don't be afraid to really turn the knob a lot!
